Malaysian Night 2004, a "Rendezvous in the Realm of Malaya" were held by the Nebraska University Malaysian Students Association(NUMSA) on March 6, 2004 at the Nebraska Union. This is one of the biggest event being organized by NUMSA annually. We feel honored that the Ambassador of Malaysia to United States, Dato' Ghazzali Sheikh Abdul Khalid came to this event. The Chancellor of UNL, Dr. Harvey Perlman were in this event too.

Inspiringly, Dato' Ghazzali received the key to the city from the Mayor of Lincoln and Admiralship from the Governor. This is really a great news to all the Malaysian students in UNL.

After this event, I was looking forward to see the news or articles coming up in the Daily Nebraskan, the on campus daily newspaper on Monday. But disappointingly, I saw only 1 picture with a short subtitle being published in the DN. Then I checked DN online, and got to see another small picture added to its online edition. I am not sure if NUMSA has done their job to send the press release to DN or what...but after reading the feedback, I feel a bit disappointed with responses.

here's the link:

I will post some pictures in the gallery.

I think the organizer would need to inform the media to come. Not sure about other campus, but typically an Ambassador visit generate like half a page or slightly less of news on campus newspaper...

Yeah - I'm amazed too :) I remember the LA consulate general praising unl's m'sia nite everytime they see me. The conversation always goes like this:

"Ah, you're Stanford, I see. How many Malaysians do you have there?"

"About 30 in total, inclusive of graduate and undergraduate students".

"That's quite a bit. You know seomthing, I'm very impressed by the Lincoln Nebraska Malaysians there, especially when they perform in their Malaysian Night. It was very impressive."

"Wow, you flew all the way there to see their Malaysia Night?"

"Yes, of course. It was very impressive."

"How many students do they have there?"

"Let me see, I think about 400 students. They are very impressive."

"I see.."

"Why don't you guys organize a Malaysian Night at Stanford too?"

"We'll try.."

"It will be very exciting. You know those Nebraska students, they really give me a big surprise. The Malaysian Night is so grand and there are so many performances. It is really impressive."

"Right.."

etc. etc.

That was in SF. And it repeated when I saw him again in LA. :D You guys have a FAN man... Should start fan club. (Thinking back on the Malaysian Night we did with the asean people in S'pore, we didn't receive any fan mail at all... so sad...)

There used to be 400 Malaysian students in UNL couple years ago...but there's a significant decline in numbers of Malaysian students lately.

Right now, we have: 20 graduate students, 52 seniors, 21 juniors
and 9 sophomores. 20+ out of 52 seniors will be graduating this semester...erm...i am not sure whether we will be able to organize such big event in the future...

I saw your v clip, very nice. Its a lot of of work. We (students in UW-Madison) also performed a Malaysian Night last year (2003). Man, its not easy, but superfun. Hey maybe we can put links to our events( pictures, v clips), so other people could see them, and learn from them. That way, maybe more people will be inspired to do it too!
