Heard about this from a Vietnamese friend. It concerns volunteerism and focuses on Southeast Asia. Decided to post this up coz I feel that Malaysians should play a more active part in helping out its developing neighbours.
SEALNet = Southeast Asian Learning Network
It was founded in 2004 in Stanford University and their mission: "SEALNet's mission is to bring service to Southeast Asia and to promote the spirit of service leadership in the region. Through a common platform of service, we contribute to the development of future Southeast Asian leaders as well as young leaders from other parts of the world, and thus create trusted networks of students and professionals who are committed to each other and to ASEAN?s regional progress. "
They will be organising some community service projects in Thailand, Philppines, Cambodia, Indonesia and Vietnam this summer. All expenses are paid for for the entire duration of the projects but you'll have to cover the expenses to fly there and back on your own.

bp_ffei: thank you very much for the link!!!
I applied for the Project Vietnam!!! Spent a day thinking about my application answers. I do hope I'll get it, because it'll be awesome to teach children. Although, I'm worried that my answers may not be good enough. Anyway, -cross fingers-
The environmental awareness in Thailand is very appealing too, but unfortunately, I'm not sure if I'll be free then.

Do share your experiences here when you get back ok? "Pay it forward" and benefit others... :)
Hi I have just filed my online application for the Project Phillipines 2007
organised by SEAL Net. However, I would like to seek clarification. The site says that high school students are encouraged to apply. I am currently a pre-u student. Am I still eligible to apply? And for other projects like Project Vietnam, only local students will be selected. Is it so? Please fill me in!

Er... pre-U should correspond to high school. However, assuming you are Malaysian, the application period for foreign students has already ended (see one of my posts above)! I've checked the website and it is currently only open for local students in that particular country.
So... sorry man. Try again next year? And please let me clarify I do not really know about this organisation or their activities, so it is best to contact them directly. :)
Oh i see..that is disappointing..but just for information, do you know of any similar programs running currently that is available for applications?thx

I think there are lots of similar programmes out there! But sometimes probably due to lack of funding etc. they don't promote it aggressively.
Here's one intercultural type of organisation you can look out for: AFS (http://www.afs.org/afs_or/home). They have lots of activities around the world, including volunteerism. Knew about it through my friend, whose family was hosting a girl from Greenland. There's a Malaysia branch of the organisation too, maybe can learn more about this 90-year-old organisation from them.
Alternatively, look up the internet! I'm sure there'll be loads more of opportunities waiting for you! :)

Heard from burningBUTTERFLIES who went for SEALNet Project in Vietnam last year, that there would be a project in Sabah this year from 26th May to 9th June.
Currently, they are looking for Sponsorship support! If anyone would have any lead on that, do let burningBUTTERFLIES know. I can let you link too.

chenchow: Thank you for your heads-up in this thread!
Like Chenchow said, there will be a project right here in our very Malaysia... to be more specific, in Kota Kinabalu =). The theme for Project Malaysia 08 (PM08) is environmental awareness. This will be the first time that SEALNet holds a project in Malaysia (Previous projects: Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, Cambodia and Thailand).
I'm excited because this is a great chance for our youths to be aware of issues and most importantly, to make a difference in their own community.
The application to join the team is not up yet; however, from what I know, the applications will be up by 24th March... I'll definitely buzz you guys on that! (For this app, it would be for college/uni students ;P)
Here's a 2007 SEALNet Video for you guys to have a look at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9J-n6qG8hPw
Sponsorship-wise, if you'd know of any companies that would want to sponsor a dynamic, leadership-based youth project, do let me know =)
-------------------------
One more thing....
RECOMMERS! Are you interested to be a crucial part of PM08???
At the moment, we're looking for someone in KK to join our local/logistic team!
Basically what we do is:
- take care of the team throughout the project (... & we'll be joining them in their activities~),
And prior to that;
- planning logistic matters (such as transportation, accommodation, food etc)
- calling/meeting project partners (and the relevant.)
All to ensure a smooth, fun and successful project ;P
No experience necessary, but it'll be great if you're motivated, hardworking and dependable! Along with hard work, there will be fun times too ;P. I'm also part of the local team, so we'll help each other out =).
PM me if you're interested!

I'm interested. May I know how much is the fee? For example, air ticket, accomodation, etc. Besides that, will that be too expensive? Sometimes, voluntary work to promote awareness of environmental problem can open our eyes, but then will it be too expensive?
burningBUTTERFLIES
26-03-2008, 12:13 AM
gemini: glad that you're interested!! it's same as last year's: "All expenses are paid for for the entire duration of the projects but you'll have to cover the expenses to fly there and back on your own." And it's not only environmental awareness; that's for Malaysia only =) For other countries, the project theme differ depending on the needs of their community, like in Vietnam, it's education with street children and Thailand, it's working with AIDS patients.
Anyway, great news...
APPLICATIONS FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS ARE UP NOW!!
Closing time and date: 11.59pm (Pacific Time) Monday, April 7th, 2008
Want to help out a community and make a difference in the lives of local high school students? Check out our project page (http://www.sealnetonline.org/projects)! Perhaps you'll find a cause that interests you =).
Project applications are over here: http://www.sealnetonline.org/forms/2008_projects_application
I've actually participated in Project Vietnam last year as a team member and it was an amazing 2-weeks for me. It wouldn't had happened if bp_feii hasn't posted this thread right here in recom.... Now I'm passing on the love ;P

and sure, you both are eligible for the high school side... do apply! (and mention the things u mentioned in your email. why should they take someone far away from KK? (as we're trying to help the environmental issue there))
The PM08 high school application is in Project Malaysia's detail page =)
EDIT: also, i forgot to mention, for high school students, you will have to bear the expenses yourself; accommodation and all... but i'll try and help find cheaper alternatives for you la, if you're chosen to come ^^

Thanks. Merged already.
I love this initiative! Last year I corresponded with the team leader for Project Philippines 07 because I applied late and was eventually accepted. Unfortunately, it was called off for me because my parents feared for my safety in Cebu, Philippines! So I urge Recomers to apply and taste what it's like to do something meaningful for a community!

nmm, since high school students have to bear all expenses(food+accomodation+transport), would you mind to give me a rough calculation on the total amount spent? I need to tell my mum the rough figure in order to persuade her.
burningBUTTERFLIES
02-04-2008, 11:51 PM
hmmm... i can't really say. food-wise, maybe can predict, bt for accommodation + transport is harder. let's see, maybe you'll be eating 2 main meals a day @<hidden> RM6, so RM180 for that.
the cheapest accommodation you can get is via dorms at backpackers' hostels, around rm20++ a night. if you go for that, I'll just budget for you rm30 per night, so RM420 for that. as for transport... i can't say, because it really depends on how far you live from KK Wetlands Centre.
So, accom + food alone is RM 600.
you know what, just apply for it. if you get chosen, maybe we could ask the local students if they are interested to host a student from KL. like homestay la hahah. i can't promise you that it will happen, bt it's a possibility ^^

hey youth! are you currently in form 3-6? are you currently situated in KK? why not spend your school holiday making a difference?? you'll be picking up cool skills (also, actually putting them to use!) and meeting awesome people locally and internationally!!
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g109/squashedtiger/sealnet_poster.jpg
more info:
- during that period of time, you will be responsible for your own transport to and fro KKWC, and for your own meals. the time that you'll be in kkwc would probably be from around 9am to 5pm... not too early nor too late ;P
Dateline for apps is on April 27th, so you still have time to think abt it~
Please spread the word!!

I don't think Project Malaysia is that much of a big deal. I mean, I'm from KK and the local schools went to the bird sanctuary annually to clean up the place as well as to replant the mangrove. So, I don't know if there is anything new SEALS can bring up to liven up the place.
ps, when you get there, use lots of sunblock and wear a pair of socks before you put on the boots. The first time I wear it without socks, my feet got blistered at the heels.
Oh, and that place is really dirty especially after celebration or so. The illegal immigrants who stayed in Pulau Gaya throw everything into the sea and the tide wash them into the mangroves.

wendy191: congratulations! i'm really glad that you got in! i remember your enthusiasm, and that's an awesome trait to have! i'll see you in sabah^^. oh yea... do you have a place to stay? my fellow logistic team member, pui yee, contacted you about that right? we'll help the kids from peninsular out as much as we can!
runninghorse: there's always next year!
capablanca: hmmm, put it this way; there's a lot of community service projects out there, and SEALNet projects are different in the sense that... they understand that they are not able to make a lot of impact on issues like, say, mangroves, within the mere two weeks that they are here.
What they CAN do is to empower the local youths and challenge them to address their local issues. The students will be going through leadership workshops etc and at the end of the project, plan their own community service project for their own community. So, it's not a 'dead-end' project, but one that lives through the students.
i hope that would explain how the projects are like ^^. thanks for your comments! and i'll inform everyone to bring socks n sunblock ;P
