Depends on your interest actually. Maths Specialist seems to be great, but I don't think you would need those advanced level maths during your Accounting degree; It may be a plus point for you though. For psychology, apparently it doesn't related to Accounting at all. So, it could be taken under your very own interest. :)

I have totally no idea on Maths Specialist, cause I'm not going to study Ausmat/SAM. I would be studying A-Levels, and taking Maths, Further Maths, Economics and Physics/Computing. In my opinion, if you think you can do it, then go for it! Nothing is too hard to be attained, as long as you are interested in it and willing to work hard for it. After all, you like Maths more than Psychology! :amuse

If you're more interested in math compared to psychology, then you may take Spec Math. As for me, studying Math Studies is sufficient so I'm taking Psychology which is something new and I'm more interested in it compared to Spec Math.

I don't know the details about spec math (since I'm taking psychology), but it is more or less like add math in Form 5 (probably slightly more difficult). Most Aussie universities accept either subjects except for Monash University Clayton Campus whereby you are highly recommended to take Spec Math.

it's hard to achieve that..?

Not really. Just try your best during college. TER is somewhat calculated based on the normal distribution curve. Achieving TER 85 means your results are better than 85% of all AUSMAT students. We don't know how SACE/WACE board calculates TER exactly. However, if you achieve at least 3 A18 out of 5 subjects (highest is A20) most likely you can get TER85 and above.

This is just a rough explanation. It's a little more complicated than this. Wait till you have started, your lecturers will explain in detail and you'll get a much clearer idea.

I'll only explain Psychology to you since I have never experienced Spec Math lessons first-hand.

Psychology is the study of thoughts, feelings and behaviour of humans. Unlike sociology which studies the society as a whole, psychology is more towards the individual. Why do people stereotype? Why is gambling addictive? Is our personality due to nature or nurture? Why do babies suck their thumb a lot? All these and many other questions are explored as you study Psychology. It's pretty interesting to learn as you can constantly relate what you have learnt to yourself.

Since it's a social science, scientific investigation methods are applied here. There are some biology terms used here and there too but Psychology is a far cry from being as taxing as Biology.

The exams are not that tough if you understand and can elaborate your points well. That's the most obvious difference between Spec Math and Psychology. Spec Math depends a lot on, well, calculation of course while Psychology is towards elaboration. Hence, language proficiency plays a quite significant role.

If you have a thirst to understand human behaviour better or just want a subject where you can relax your mind during its lessons then Psychology is the way to go.

You should find out more about Spec Math though before deciding as my explanation is obviously one-sided. Perhaps Spec Math will suit you better? :)

Does elaboration require more of understanding or memorizing?
It seems very interesting. Is it a very subjective subject with no real correct answers?

Specialist mathematics could be difficult as it requires a very good understanding of the concepts, and is more advanced compared to the SPM level. It is hard for me to say who would be good or who would be bad, but it would be safe to say that if you have no problem scoring >90 for your SPM level additional maths papers then you should be fine for specialist maths too.

Understand the theories, memorise the terms.
In exams, your examples have to be logical of course, haha.

Yeah, agreed. If you're more of a Maths person, I would recommend you take Spec Maths. I find Spec Maths to be a bit hard but after a while it can actually be quite enjoyable to learn (didn't get any easier for me but the process became less painful).
A lot of problem solving questions (especially in relation to differential and integral calculus) but you'll get used to it. I wouldn't exactly describe it as similar to add maths since there are totally new topics that you've never learned before but yeah, the difficulty is more or less like how we tend to think add maths>maths. Don't be discourage though, the normal rule of hard work=success applies. If you have a relatively good grasp of maths concepts, as long as you do your work, it shouldn't be hard too score atleast an A17.
As a suggestion, since you're thinking of taking accounting, you might also look into taking Legal Studies if it's offered at your college. A friend of mine took that for her SAM and she managed to get 90+ TER (can't remember what exactly). She's currently at UNSW doing BCom major in Accounting. According to her, (don't know how true this is) Legal Studies can be of help to her degree since you get to learn about laws in business and stuff.
Hope that helps. :)

Helios, all the books for AUSMAT can be bought at the photcopy shop in nearby Akasia/Cendana college. There, they almost have every photocopy of college books. So dont wory much. But maybe there are some books yu have to buy original through lecturers if the lect dont allow photocopied books...

Pharmacy AUSMAT will take ESLS, IELTS, Bio, Chem, either Physics/Spec Math. And I'm not sure whether you will take Computer Studies in Semester 1 or not..

You can bring your SPM reference books if you want to. It might be useful in your studies/assignments. For textbooks, you can buy it from here. Dictionary is highly recommended since you'll be doing English as Second Language Studies (ESLS). You can even bring dictionaries to the examination hall.

Correction... Cendana DO NOT have photocopy shops. Besides, the books sold in the photocopy shop near Cemara/Akasia (known as Double A) is kinda outdated, so its best you go to Mac Center to get your textbooks/reference.

Where do we get reference books for AUSMAT?

I believe you are from Sunway, and the ausmat there differs from the ausmat in INTEC. INTEC's ausmat is actually the South Australian Matriculation, which is same as Taylor's SAM. Sunway's Ausmat is the same as KBU's ausmat. I believe you can get books around your college, ask your seniors who are there. :))

Yes you do take Computer Studies in Sem 1 (unless they have changed the syllabus). You can either buy the books from seniors (ask your lecturer first if the syllabus is the same - cause it changes every year) or buy directly from the lecturer. It's about RM55.

Hi everyone,

My parents want me to do AUSMAT in stead of A levles but I'm worried that it won't be accepted by universities outside of Aussie, New Zealand or Malaysia. Do you guys know any university (like a UK one) that doesn't accept AUSMAT? I'd be more confident doing A levels coz I know that it's accepted throughout the world. So, I'm kinda in a dilemma.

And, I'd be going to either Sunway or Taylor's University College so which one's better??

Most universities worldwide accept AUSMAT, except those in the United States. So you should be pretty safe. And if you have the money for it, go to Taylor's. The system there is more efficient. :)

Tanx.

Courses offered in Sunway and Taylor's are different. In Sunway it's Austalian Matriculation (ausmat), Western Australian Year 12, while in Taylors it's SAM, South Australian Matriculation. They are under different examination bodies.

Though all from Australia, there are distinct features. Some say Ausmat is more challenging, but it may be subjective.
It was both 50% internal assessment, 50% external in the past, but I heard SAM is going to review its system and change it to 30% external? To make a better choice, I suggest you find out more about each :laugh

uumm, may i know why some choose a-levels but there are some choosing ausmat or sam too??

A levels? A levels 100% external examination, like SPM and STPM, while SAM and Ausmat, internal assessment contributes a portion towards the final score.

So it depends on how you study. Last minute studying and procastination will never work for Ausmat and SAM, you have to constantly be on your toes all the time.

They say in A levels the depth of syllabus is challenging. There are more things to study in the scope and you go deeper into it. Ausmat focuses more on analytical skills.

Recognition-wise, A levels is more recognized compared to Ausmat and SAM. International passport xD So it's safer. :laugh

If I may, here are some things for you to consider.

A Levels
Pros :
- Internationally Recognized
- Challenging in the sense that questions asked in Exams are almost never direct, they require you to be able to see the larger picture of what you have learned and be able to express it/apply it on the spot
- It suits you if you are comfortable with a 100% exam based assessment like in SPM
- You will learn things in great detail and depth, so no matter where you go for University, you'll have a little advantage in the sense that you may have covered some subsets of what is being taught
- For the UK I hear you can use SAM and AUSMAT but only for certain universities and certain courses so it sort of limits your scope
- You can use A Levels to transfer credits for your degree if you go to US Universities provided that the subjects you took in A Levels are relevant to your course and only if you have achieved a certain level like a B and above (but some like MIT might not give you credits, but this is a rare exception)

Cons :
- It takes longer than SAM/AUSMAT
- Although you take 3/4 subjects, you have to put in quite a lot of effort into mastering what has been taught to you, so it's not really much of a joyride ;)
- You don't really learn researching skills like in SAM/AUSMAT (they have to produce research as part of their coursework) so you might be in a slight disadvantage in this aspect when you go to University
- If you want to go to the USA, as long as you have 12 years of Education + SAT Reasoning Test + SAT Subject Tests you can still go there but I don't know whether A Level applicants have a higher chance of getting in or not
- I am definitely sure that although A Levels is an international passport, International Baccalaureate is an even better passport but that's a different story x)

Some stuff about SAM, you get a lot of tests throughout the semesters that are counted towards your final grades. At the same time you'll have to complete assignments using proper formatting and referencing. I found this to help in time management in uni, where I could reference and cite sources without having to constantly refer to the APA (system of referencing) guidebook cause I had learnt how to cite, paraphrase ideas and quote people in completing my assignments. It may not be an 'officially recognised' skill but these techniques do come in quite handy :)

I did 3A/3B too. For me, both maths are the same, tough ! Maths 3a/3b will be easier but is quite hard to score . Maths 3a/3b will be scale down and 3c/3d will be scale up.

Ya. I didn't dare to take 3c/3d because I was quite weak in Add maths. But turned out Math AB wasn't easy too. :amazed
