My previous classmate posted something like this on my class's forum:
ASPARTAME - THE SILENT KILLER
For those who take

Ricola & Fisherman , please note that they both contain Aspartame - the silent killer.

Fisherman Sweets
FOR THOSE WHO LIKE TO EAT FISHERMAN SWEETS BE CAREFUL: Sugar free products contain ASPARTAME .. So don't consume Sugar free product esp. 'fisherman sweets'
ASPARTAME - THE SILENT KILLER (by Ron Harder)

To those who prefer to consume artificial flavouring:

There is an epidemic across North America today of
Multiple Sclerosis and Lupus. Most people do not understand why this epidemic is happening, and they do not know why these diseases are so rampant. I would like to share with you the main reason we are having this very serious problem. Many people today use artificial sweeteners in their tea or coffee.

They do this because the ads they see on TV tell them that sugar is bad for their health. This is absolutely true. Sugar is toxic to us , but what most people use as a replacement for sugar is much more deadly. I am talking about ASPARTAME. It is the cause of the epidemic that was mentioned above. ASPARTAME is an extremely toxic chemical that is produced by a chemical company called
Monsanto.

ASPARTAME is being marketed around the world as a sugar substitute and is found in all diet soft drinks, such as
Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi. It is also found in artificial sweeteners such as NutraSweet, Equal, and Spoonful; and it is used in many other products as a sugar replacement
.

ASPARTAME is marketed as a diet product, but it is not a diet product at all. In fact, it will cause you to GAIN weight because it makes you crave carbohydrates. Causing you to gain weight is only a very small part of what ASPARTAME does. It is a toxic chemical that changes the brain's chemistry It can and does cause severe seizures.

This chemical changes the dopamine level in the brain, and it is particularly deadly for anyone suffering from Parkinson's disease.

ASPARTAME is extremely poisonous, and here is why one of the toxic ingredients of it is wood alcohol. When the temperature of

ASPARTAME exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in it is converted to Formaldehyde, and then to formic acid, which in turn causes folic acidosis.

FORMALDEHYDE is grouped in the same class of poisons as Cyanide and Arsenic which are very deadly toxins. The only difference is, Formaldehyde kills quietly, and it takes a little longer. And, in the process of killing people, it causes all kinds of neurological problems. There are 92 documented symptoms of Aspartame Poisoning leading to coma and death.

The majority of these symptoms are neurological, because the ASPARTAME attacks and destroys the nervous system. One of these symptoms is Lupus
, which has become almost as rampant as Multiple Sclerosis, especially with Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers.

And here's something from WebMD
April 4, 2006 (Washington) -- Diet soda lovers may be able to sip a little easier, thanks to a new study that shows that the artificial sweetener aspartame does not raise the risk of cancer.

Last year, an Italian study of rats linked low doses of aspartame -- the sweetener in NutraSweet, Equal, and thousands of consumer products -- to leukemia and lymphoma.

But the new study -- conducted in people, not rats -- found no such link. Nor did the popular sugar substitute raise the risk of brain cancer, says researcher Unhee Lim, PhD, of the National Cancer Institute.

The findings were presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research here.
No Link to Cancer

Lim and colleagues studied 473,984 men and women, aged 50 to 71, participating in the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study.

In 1995 and 1996, participants were asked how much they drank of three popular diet beverages -- soda, fruit drinks, and iced tea. They were also asked if they added aspartame to their coffee and tea.

From their answers, the researchers calculated how much aspartame they consumed on a daily basis.

During the next five years, 1,972 of them developed lymphoma or leukemia, and 364 developed brain tumors.

When the researchers looked at people who consumed an average of at least 400 milligrams of aspartame a day -- about the amount found in two cans of soda -- there was no link between aspartame consumption and any of these cancers.
Findings Somewhat Reassuring

Michael Jacobson, head of the consumer watchdog group Center for Science in the Public Interest, says the findings are somewhat reassuring.

Jacobson, who had pushed for a government review of aspartame's safety after the rat study was published, says, "The new study is in humans and goes a long way toward alleviating many concerns."

That said, the study design was subject to so-called recall bias, as participants were asked to remember what they drank and how much they drank, he says.

"If their recollections weren't accurate, it compromises the findings," Jacobson tells WebMD.

Lim acknowledges the point. She says that is one reason why she is not ready to make any public health recommendations about aspartame consumption at this time.

"This is a first step," she tells WebMD. "We need to verify the findings and also study possible links between the sweetener and other cancers as well."

My question is...Is this really true? Aspartame really is as poisonous as Arsenic? And still the market still contains sweets with aspartame in it?

Hmmm.....

Doses.....I thank Dr Joe for this.....

What is written is true, however, many of these sites tell you one side of the story, For instance, did you know that there is more Aspartame in your natural tomato juice than your diet coke? Does it mean you should refrain from consuming tomatoes?

Everything that we consume today can someway or another be linked to something bad, does it mean we should stop living?

Anyone else who would like to critically appraise those articles?

Arrggh!

Diet coke uses Aspartam instead of natural sugar.

I tot aspartame is artificial sugar?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspartame

Aspartame (IPA: /ˈ?.spɚˌteɪm/ or /əˈspɑɹˌteɪm/) is the name for an artificial, non-saccharide sweetener, aspartyl-phenylalanine-1-methyl ester; i.e., the methyl ester of the dipeptide of the amino acids aspartic acid and phenylalanine.

This sweetener is marketed under a number of trademark names, including Equal, NutraSweet, Canderel, and is an ingredient of approximately 6,000 consumer foods and beverages sold worldwide. It is commonly used in diet soft drinks, and is often provided as a table condiment. It is also used in some brands of chewable vitamin supplements and common in many sugar-free chewing gums. However, aspartame is not always suitable for baking because it often breaks down when heated and loses much of its sweetness. In the European Union, it is also known under the E number (additive code) E951. Aspartame is also one of the sugar substitutes used by diabetics.

Aspartame is a subject of a public controversy due to perceived health risks (see aspartame controversy). It has lost market share in recent years to sucralose, (Splenda, Altern).

:?: :?: :?:

The thing is this. Aspartame itself is not dangerous, it is the product after some chemical reaction that is hazardous.

The culprit here is formaldehyde, that is why you do not consume methonol, methonol will become formaldehyde and then formic acid.

I apologise for confusing you by stating there is more aspartame in tomatoes than in your diet coke. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener.

When you drink diet coke, the aspartame will be broken up into aspartic acid, phenylalanine and methanol. Now once you have got methanol, you know what you will get.FORMALDEHYDE.

However, the methanol content of a diet drink is far lesser than you would get in your tomato and grape juice. If grape and tomato juice can't kill you, will the methanol in your diet drink kill you?

It all comes down to doses every single thing that we have today can be linked to death and whatnot, but is the amount present enough to kill us?

ic then, thanks a lot! In the end it all comes down to doses and amount...LOL
