hey ppl,

i'm translating a children's literature for a literacy project.
we're translating the English book "Potty" to as many languages as we can. right now we have Hindi, Portugese, and Cantonese.

i'm working on the Malay translation. however i'm having problems with the words "potty" and "bottom". do you ppl think that "buntut" is appropriate for "bottom"? and i can't think of any Malay word that's close to "potty" in any sense.

please help me... tolong! tolong!

?Potty? by Mylo Freeman

Near a small village in the middle of a jungle sits a potty. Beside it is a note that says ?Only the best bottom of all will fit on this potty.?

As Zebra passes by, he reads the note and thinks, ?My bottom is the best.? But Zebras bottom is much too big.

Next, Giraffe wants to have a try. ?Bend your knees more, or you?ll fall over!? calls Zebra.

?Leopard?s bottom won?t fit either,? giggles Giraffe. ?Why don?t you tell him?? asks Zebra. ?Oh no, you tell him,? says Giraffe.

?Snake looks like he could use a hand,? says Leopard. ?Ssstay ssstill for a sssecond,? Snake hisses at the potty.

?Elephants is sitting down, but I can?t see the potty anywhere,? says Zebra. ?Oops! I missed,? Elephant tells them.

?Does it fit me?? asks Gorilla. ?Not on your head, silly,? the animals call out. ?Just joking!? Gorilla says.

?Let?s go have something to eat,? says Elephant. ?Tortoise can take a while.?

When the animals return, they can?t believe their eyes. ?Who is that?? asks Gorilla. ?He fits on the Potty,? Tortoise whispers.

?Its so small, that bottom,? says Elephant. ?And it has no stripes,? says Zebra. ?Or spots,? says Giraffe. ?Where is its fur?? wonders Leopard.

?He hasss gone pee-pee in the potty,? says Snake. ?That?s the best bottom of all!? shouts Tortoise. And they all agree.

Does your bottom fit on the potty?

If a translation in Northern Malay dialect is needed the two words your asking for would be,

Pungkoq dan Lubang Teik/ Jamban (Tahi) :D

Anyway the most approriate reference would be Punggung and mangkuk tandas.

Sorry, I'm a little bit blur here.... What's the story about? If nothing, then does it have a purpose? I can't get it.

Its suppose to be a babies bottom. I think its method of encouraging young todlers to start using the potty.

haha...thirdshifter, you're frigging WICKED! tp betul laa tu hahaha...

NEway, should be "bottom" = "butt" = punggung

"potty" should be mangkuk tandas right? the small, movable thing that resembles a toilet bowl that parents always use to train a child on how to use a real toilet bowl

Cool. Thanks for all your responses.

I'm trying hard to write in simple sentences now... with my rusty BM... sigh

Anyone feel like translating the whole story? :)

Remember it's for kids, so don't use complex sentense structures or difficult words.

Can someone help me with "hisses" please?

?Elephants is sitting down, but I can?t see the potty anywhere,? says Zebra. ?Oops! I missed,? Elephant tells them.

what about "missed?"

hisses = desis

missed = tersilap (?)

In context, Hisses would have to be Berkata, Bercakap and missed would be tersasar or Tak muat.

I think a direct translation would be very hard to be understood especially by a very young kid.

I think we need the context too...
But let's try this :

?Snake looks like he could use a hand,? says Leopard. ?Ssstay ssstill for a sssecond,? Snake hisses at the potty.

"Nampaknya si ular itu boleh menggunakan tangannya (tapi untuk buat apa?...tak tau)," kata harimau bintang.
" Tunggu sebentar.." desis ular kepada mangkuk tandas.

?Elephants is sitting down, but I can?t see the potty anywhere,? says Zebra. ?Oops! I missed,? Elephant tells them.

what about "missed?"[/quote]

"Gajah-gajah itu sedang duduk, tetapi saya tak nampak mangkuk tandas di mana-mana," kata zebra. "Alamak, saya terlepas/tersasar (really need context)."

"Nampaknya si ular itu boleh menggunakan tangannya (tapi untuk buat apa?...tak tau)," kata harimau bintang.
" Tunggu sebentar.." desis ular kepada mangkuk tandas.

i think its "nampaknya si ular memerlukan pertolongan"..i don't think there's anything there about using the snakes hands (when obviously it doesn't have any). :D

"Gajah-gajah itu sedang duduk, tetapi saya tak nampak mangkuk tandas di mana-mana," kata zebra. "Alamak, saya terlepas/tersasar (really need context)."

well for this one..when i read the malay translation...i can imagine that the elephant had already peed  ..when it actually means that it had missed 'sitting' on the potty. but i can't think of any other sentence for that one. :)

I think when it comes to translating...we don't need to do direct translation. try coming up with new sentences that carries the closes meaning :?
