Mozilla Corp, has just released the latest browser, Firefox 3.0

It has a lot of new features, such as better-looking bookmarks, surfing history and downloads (vista style)....

i m using Firefox 2.0.0.6, should i uninstall the previous version and get the new 1?

No, the 3.0 is still unreleased. This is only a mock-up of the expected 3.0 software, and is not the actual software.

The "technical trial version" (alpha) has been available for quite some time and I used it for a while, but it wasn't really much different to 2.0.0.6, and many extensions were incompatible with it. So I wouldn't recommend you to install the alpha version, let's wait until the beta version or the actual release. :)

Upgrading Firefox does not require rebooting computer. It just needs you to restart your browser after installing

More rational method: Avoid multi tasking, or uninstall irrevelant softwares

out of topic ... do anyone really try on the public beta??

From Cnet..
The new Firefox 3 beta 1 release includes some notable security features such as one-click Web site verification and automatic testing of outdated plug-ins.

The prerelease also shows off some of the planned personalization features, such as a star button for quickly adding bookmarks and a Smart Places folder with access to frequently visited sites and pages (which sounds quite a bit like the Speed-Dial feature in Opera 9.)

Firefox 3 beta 1 was released to the Mozilla developer community for testing purposes only, but that doesn't mean that anyone can't take a look at the new version. Whenever using beta or prerelease software, we always recommend that you back up your data first.

I am using it as my main browser right now... and it behaved much much better than Firefox 2...

The only doof thing is, most extensions won't work here... !*bummer*

The people at Portableapps have put together a portable version of Firefox 3 Beta 1! You can install it on a thumb drive or even on your harddisk, and you would have both firefox 2 and 3 at the same machine without worrying about corrupted bookmarks or settings.

Go try it out!

http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable/test

p/s: For the extension compatibility issue, just go to about:config, create a new Boolean value called extensions.checkCompatibility, set it to false, then restart Firefox. You will then skip the compatibility check and be able to install older extensions.

You might want to be extra careful about enabling old extensions though, some might cause the browser to crash or corrupt data. So do this only if you know what you are doing.

The portable apps and the ordinary firefox would not update to the firefox 3 beta automatically because the new software is still in beta testing and are not meant for public use.

I am quite in love with the latest beta and have already made it my day-to-day browser. :)

DOS is ancient, but command prompt isn't...

In fact, it's one of the most usable, fastest, powerful ever to be invented for the computer...

Anyway, I am sure you guys will be surprised to know that some people actually still uses text-based net, because for all their purposes, they don't need all the multimedia options ;)

Firefox is supposed run faster than IE, right?
But my IE 7 is faster than my Firefox 2. Why?
I'm not that tech-savvy so I didn't dare to use beta version.
Any suggestions?

Well, I am not really sure why. It might be the various add ons that you've added to your firefox.

Well, i've been using the Firefox beta for quite a long while, and it haven't crashed on me (yet). I suppose it is stable enough for public consumption as of it's current state ;)

On the side note: various publications just recently named firefox 3 as the best browser out there.

And safari 3.1 is a tad slower compared to version 3.0

Oh.. yeah. What do you think of Flock and Netscape? They are remarkable like firefox. But they are faster than Firefox in my machine.

youngyew
22-03-2008, 12:37 AM
That's really weird. Flock is good if you do a lot of social networking like facebook, flickr etc; but otherwise it's a bloated version of Firefox. So I don't really think it runs faster than Firefox under normal circumstances.

Netscape was bought by AOL but its development has been discontinued since a month or so ago.

That's weird, cause flock used to make my box crawl back in the day. Haven't used it again since then though so things might have changed. Regularly I use Firefox + various extensions, but I'm playing around with epiphany browser these days. Seems pretty fast if you run gnome

The problem might lie in the contents of his/her firefox profiles. You might want to erase your profiles completely and start anew...

The other problem might be virus/trojan/spyware inhibiting firefox from fulfilling it's full potential. I've seen malwares blocking firefox completely from running properly, so this might just be an subtle version of it...

firefox 3.0 is not recommended coz it does not support most of the add-ons.
firefox 2.0.0.14 is much better, fast and efficient :)

I doubt anyone would use much more extensions than 2. Besdies, Firefox 3 is much better than Firefox 2 in terms of features and most importantly, speed. it's the speediest of all firefoxes out there...

Agreed.

I think Firefox 3 works pretty well with my computer and it's actually speedier than Opera 10. o_O And it's still the same, but the speed boost is what makes it great!

Firefox 3.0 has newer interface so you can pause or resume the downloading. In Firefox 3.0 text as well as image both can be zoomed while zooming a page but in Firefox 2.0 only text will be zoomed. Firefox 3.0 also provides the facility of Plug-ins with Add-ons.
