After successful organizing of Experiences 2006 Kuala Lumpur and Discover U.S. Education - KL '07 (http://www.discoverUSeducation.org), it has come to a new year, where we should focus on Discover U.S. Education - KL '08.
For this year, after some brainstorming, we intend to transform the format of this event. Instead of just a 1-day education fair, we intend to build up a portal, http://www.discoverUSeducation.org (not yet built) with information on U.S. Universities Education, focusing on authorized sources.
Some of the aspects that we have thought about:-
a) Links to US Unis Ranking
b) Links to US Unis
c) Links to Malaysian Students Associations
d) Links to Malaysian Students Departments
e) Links to Standardized Exams
f) Links to various sites with tips of applications and also the actual forms.
g) Links to forum focusing on US Universities applications
h) Articles by Malaysians who have studied there to share on experience
i) Database of Malaysian Alumni and Current Students of US Universities (Group by universities and also majors) -- Would require login to access this to protect the DB.
j) Links to various source of fundings/scholarships/loans
etc
Would like to pick the brains of fellow ReComers on what other information on U.S. Universities that would be useful to you guys. This is hopefully be a one-stop area for US Universities Applications for Malaysians.
Instead of seminars at KL, we hope to be able to conduct the seminars by alumni and current students of US Universities in various parts of Malaysia.

How about explanations about the different types of schools in the states and a comparison of the universities in terms of level of competitiveness, major, tuition, acceptance rate, applicant pool and student resources?
I know some of these aspects are rather vaguea and can be placed under the forum. Then again, it would be easier if I could just visit the site and search for the universities that offer my desired major and start my search from that point onwards.
It would be a splendid idea organizing seminars in various parts of Malaysia.HJowever, I am rather concerned about the man power and financial side of the plan.
By the way, are you accepting volunteers at this stage?

Thanks for the feedback.
In terms of cost, it would be much much cheaper to do seminar around the country, than to do a one-day fair at a convention center.
Of course, we are not going to do the seminars at 5-star hotels. It would most likely be at some schools/halls which would cost very little/free.
In terms of seminars, we do not need 200 alumni to go. So, each alumni/current students could be at each different area. So, those alumni/current students from northern Malaysia would gather in Penang for that seminar etc.
We would start to take in volunteers soon. For those who are interested, do mention it here. We would contact you soon!
Do let us know which area you are willing to help too!

Anyway, if i can, i will help out.
Count me in as a volunteer. I'm at kl that time. =)

For this year, it would be called USA For Students. The website will be at here (www.usaforstudents.org)
It would be on 14th June 2008 (Saturday) at Wisma MCA.
This year's event will be co-organized by US Embassy, Discover US Education, American Universities Alumni Malaysia and MACEE.

Guess the website has not been created yet. I was redirected to the discoveruseducation.org website from last year event.

ok i'm slightly confused. this is the same one as the usa for students thing which will be roughly the same as last year's discover us right? and by volunteering does it mean by setting a booth like last year?
Hey, the event is just after my A2 exams! haha, guess I can be a part of this event too! I was supposed to attend it last year but could not make it. This time hopefully I can make amends!

(1) Alumni/ students from US Colleges who will be manning their college booths. We have a special name for them - "Facilitators". Hence, those in this category, please sign up as "Facilitator" on the website.
(2) People who are not alumni/ students of US colleges but still wish to help out with the event. These are volunteers who will be helping with the general tasks of the organizing. No sign up on the website. Just express your interest here. chenchow and I and the rest of the team will contact you!
Those who fall into Category 1 but wish to help out for Category 2 are always welcome though. :D

I registered myself as facilitator cause Chen Chow wrote that if we just got admitted into a uni we should register as facilitator. Is this correct?

Do sign up even if you're just a freshman who's never set foot on your college's campus. I did it for Dartmouth last year and it was a blast.

Looks like "Discover USA" and I have had no affinity over the years. I will already be in Tanzania by the 14th of June - expenses fully paid by my school. (Might as well do shameless plug for DUKE now since I can't be at the fair!!!)
But I think Tzuo Hann will be around. (Yes, the same Tzuo Hann who cycled from the US to M'sia for charity.) Did I forget to mention that he graduated from DUKE? Well, anyways, he's freaking awesome.
And oh, by the way, Tzuo Hann guaduated from DUKE.
DUKE's freaking awesome.

There seems to be some confusion over whether the event this year is Discover U.S. Education or U.S.A. for Students. Sincere apologies from us, the organizing committee for not clarifying this earlier. U.S.A. for Students is the continuation of Discover U.S. Education but it is a joint collaboration between the US Embassy, Discover, MACEE and AUAM. Last year, Discover was the main organizer of the event but we find it difficult to organize the event year after year due to the lack of human resource, hence we pass some of the organizing responsibilities to the U.S. Embassy. U.S.A for Students is the new event name of the joint collaboration. So, be rest assured that the event is trustworthy and you should definitely sign up!!!

...and my convocation is June 14. Haha.

What kind of volunteers are you looking for?Ehm.. event publicity? Help promote the event to your friends and everyone you know? So far, we haven't put much effort into promoting the event yet. Do a blog post about the event and bug your friends to do the same. :P
