Yup. Refer to their site for more information, or ask some of the Recommers who took the test. (Erm, Philip?)
if i'm the philip you're referring to then nope i didn't to the act but i know quite a few who did it [and did well! :D] so it's very possible to do well for it.

Digressions, digressions. Moving on......

Hi Justim Lim, iMapler and other interested parties,
I am glad you are thinking ahead, thinking ahead is important and you will get all sort of advices from different people, but it is your future and you should aim to be the best in the field you choose. A ggod head start is always better than a late start.
Do 13 year old study for SAT? Yes, some do (in USA), past SAT questions are used in screening for talented youth selection program. It is used in the Johns Hopkins University's CTY program, and Stanford's EPGY program. You can find out more through Google search. If you you are into Math and Physics, the EPGY program is really good. If you are really advanced, you may try NUS High School, it is a new school set up by The National University of Singapore to go after talented youth.
These programs are very intense by nature, you have to like it and have the discipline to do most of the studies by yourself or a small group among yourselves. So, when others play in the week ends and holidays, you have to focus on your studies. You have to manage your time well.
From what I have seen, if you pick one subject, say math, you can do 2 years of school work in 1 calendar year. When you get to physics, if you have completed Calculus BC before starting physics, you can started with Calculus based physics (Physic C or typical first year university physics) at at the beginning of High School or in Form 4/5. It may seem impossible, but as it turned out, if you are very strong in math, you start from the basic equations in physics and everything else is just the consequences from there. You do not need long convoluted explainations. It is much clearer and concise.
Now, to get into Harvard or other top universities, pick up something you are really interested in and try to be really good at it. Harvard has places for all rounded and nicely lope sided students, but you have to be really good in your chosen area. At this point, do not try too hard to fulfil what Harvard wants, try to be very good in something and enjoy what you do first. Try not to be one who feels proud because he goes to Harvard, but try to be one Harvard will be proud of, after you graduate from Harvard.
There is also a group of very unhappy Harvard students too, they were tops in their high schools, but upon entry into Harvard, they found that they are behind in every field. You do not want to be one of those.
What is the point of accelerating this early? If you see knowledge as a tool for you to do things you want to do, accelerating early opens up opportunity early, it is fun and you will get a lot of respect from this too. If you want to be among the top in these universities, early atart will definately give you advantages. There are many talented people, working hard and start early in this world. I hope you are among them. If you read C.N. Yang's autobiography, you can get a sense of it too, the same can be said if you have listened to Yuan T Lee describing what he did as a student.
Please feel free to ask if you have more questions.

I apologise in advance if this question has been asked before, but is it possible for your counselor's report to come from a club teacher adviser instead an actual counselor, class/form teacher or principal?
Also, if i want to get a letter of recommendation from a former employer, is there any specific format he should follow? or does it suffice to start with a 'dear sir' and my employer's name and contact number at the end.

most important is if he/she holds a post in school administration apart from being just a teacher. i think your club adviser should be ok. could someone else clarify?
the letter could be in any format. so yeah, a 'dear sir/madam' on top of your employer's recommendation counts. best way to do it is to have the company's letterhead on top and employer's signature & position & contact at the bottom.

sorry again if this question has been asked, it's just that i'm a bit confused by the common application. What do most of you guys do- send in everything online or everything by mail? I know they prefer it online, but isn't it much easier to cross out and annotate stuff on the forms if we use hard copies?
Also, having read through pinkpau's blog, she says that she mailed in her SSR,MYR, teacher and counselor evaluations and recommendations and additional things like her resume and extra recommendation letters but that her essays were submitted online.
this confuses me because i thought we can't mix-and-match? Does this mean we can send in our personal information (that includes our academic info, extracurricular activities and essay) online and the rest (ssr, myr, teacher's rec) can be mailed? And what about the supplement forms?
Also, when they ask us to list our activities, does it make sense to put the name of our clubs/societies next to the word 'activity' instead? And is it ok if i list my work experience as done during 'school year' even though it was done during our malaysian school holidays (november, december).
please help, really dunno what to do here:(

you can submit your forms the way pinkpau did it. in fact, most of the people that i know did it this way because their teachers found it more convenient to send hard copies of the teacher evaluations than doing it online. i believe that it should be fine to do it this way unless your university clearly indicates that they want it in a certain way (although such universities are hard to come by). supplement forms can also be mailed like the arts supplement form that asks you to include some of your previous work in that field.
in the case of your work experience, i would say that it may be more accurate to put summer instead of school year because you did not actually work while you were going to school at the same time. others may feel free to clarify this matter.
in my opinion, you can put the name of the club next to the word activity, but make sure you put it in a way that will not confuse the person who is going to read your application. you may also submit a resume in addition to that if you find that it makes things clearer.
hope this helps.

No, SAT I and SAT II must be taken at different times. As for Jan examination, if you're planning to apply for universities whose application close at end of December or early January, it's not recommended. Do so only if your application deadline is not in a rush.

on each SAT exam date, you can take only:
A. SAT Reasoning Test, or
B. 3 SAT II Subject Tests
so no, you can't take both 1 SAT II Subject Test and the SAT Reasoning Test on the same date. and no, you can't take 4 Subject Tests on the same date.
and i think this has been mentioned a lot of times before, please please do not plan to take any test in January. because, schools with early deadlines (UCLA, UC Berkeley...) do not accept january scores. second, you might use that january test date to improve less-than-satisfactory SAT scores taken in Oct/Nov/Dec.

It's not wise to take both maths. A piece of advice, considering the high curve of MATH I, getting a perfect score on MATH II might actually be easier than MATH I.
For those SAT II subjects, it is better if you asked the admission office straight away. There's no exact requirements but some colleges prefer the students to take certain subject arrangement over the rest.

If you apply for a competitive college, you better demonstrate that you are a strong candidate compare to other applicants with the information you provide, otherwise, the place will be given to others who have clearly demonstrated abilities.

thanks for the advice guys. ok, now i'm a little worried.. how tough exactly is math 2? is it comparable to form 5 add maths or waayyy harder? i think i'll be ok for physics coz i took it at A level.
how about the chem and bio? although i did well for those subjects in secondary school, it's been over 8 months since i've last touched them! i think it'd be slightly easier to recall my bio facts than chem.. what do you think? do i have a good chance of doing well if i take the subject test exams in december? and what about the history papers?

i don't think math 1 would be disapproved though. it's true that some universities don't accept math 1 scores (like UCLA, UC Berkeley...) while some schools encourage applicants to take 2/3 subject tests in different areas (like princeton), but i think most schools mind the scores much more than which subject it is. i myself took math 1 as a 4th subject and i found it harder than math 2 (funny, i know), and i know of a guy who took math 1, math 2 & physics and got himself into harvard ;) in the end, it's your choice really. if you'd rather keep it safe and take the subjects you're good at, then be it. if you want to demonstrate your capability in different subjects, then take different subjects.
but like capablanca said, getting an 800 in math 1 is harder than getting an 800 in math 2. in math 1, one mistake and you can say bye bye to your 800; in math 2, 5 mistakes and you may still get that 800.
Thx 4 the quick reply. Jz one more question, 4 those hu are taking chemical engineering, is it mandatory 2 take chemistry or he or she can jz choose chinese or other easier subjects like maths 1? Urgent~
no it's not mandatory. the choice is yours. but since you want to show them that you're passionate about the subject you want to major in, it would be better to take chemistry, no?
thanks for the advice guys. ok, now i'm a little worried.. how tough exactly is math 2? is it comparable to form 5 add maths or waayyy harder? i think i'll be ok for physics coz i took it at A level.

if you can score form 4 & 5 add math, you'll probably also sail through math 2. it's not hard, but it can be tricky at times. and math 2 doesn't have questions from calculus, meaning you don't have to worry about differentiation & integration. i found it fairly easy as a matter of fact. and since you took physics in A levels, it should be fairly easy for you too.
chemistry has a lot of new stuff compared to your SPM syllabus, so if you want to take it, better give yourself at least one month to prepare. same can be said for biology i think. anyone who took these subjects care to elaborate? whenever you take your subject tests, how well you score depends on how well you're prepared for them. so if you really study for your subject tests starting now, i don't see how you can't get good scores come december.
oh and the history papers? they're hard. for US history, you'll be taking the test along with US residents who've learnt their history since young while you've only started studying few months before so obviously you're going to fall short la, assuming you're new to this subject. if you want to take the risk, go ahead but make sure you're very well prepared. give yourself at least 2 months if you want to at least get a decent score. anyone who've taken the real tests, care to elaborate? (desmond? andrew?)
Another question. Let say i m applying for che eng in ivy league standard unis n our sponsor only allow us 2 take physics n maths 2, is it better 4 us 2 take chemistry as the 3rd subject? Urgent, thx in advance
it's generally better to take 3 subjects compared to 2 subjects, and since you'll be doing chemical engineering, it's best to take chemistry.
oh, i think i've answered a lot of questions that have been answered before without realizing. so people, please check back on old messages on this thread and the other threads on US applications. danke.

ok i don't think this has been asked before (i hope!). you see, up until last week i was doing A levels at a local preparatory college where i've completed only one batch of A level exams. Next week, however, i'll be heading to uniten as a 2nd intake student after being offered a scholarship to study in the US by bnm.
do you think it'd be alright if I still get a letter of recommendation (not an official one that's part of the common app form with the evaluation and all ) from one of my lecturers at my former college even though i only studied there for, like, 7 months? i'm asking because from what i gather, one or two extra rec letters could help to bolster ur application a wee bit right?
p.s. yeejietang, i'm so sorry lol. even after checking multiple times whether i'd spelled ur name right, i still got it wrong! grr hehe.

Your first assumption is already wrong. Unless you are very certain that your extra recommendation will highlight something new and beneficial to your case, it's useless to get additional recommendation. Stick with what the admission officer want.
If you're not handing in your recommendation with common app, then how are you going to handle your extra recommendation?

If you do wish to get a recommendation from one of your teachers that taught you for 7 months, it should be fine. of course, the recommendation letter will only be beneficial if it is written by someone who knows you very well, hence he or she may even be able to put in one or two anecdotes to show enthusiasm for the applicant. capablanca may also have a point about the recommendations bringing out differerent aspects of your character instead of repeating them.
oh, and about taking one of the history subjects for SAT 2, bear in mind that it is a lot of work. the scope of world history is very broad and US history involves studying things from scratch because we've never learnt it before and thus our knowledge of US history is limited to the fact that people like george washington and abraham lincoln existed. but if you are very eager to take it, don't let anyone stop you but just remember that you need to put in a lot of effort if you wish to score well.

when you say the list of universities that are approved by jpa, are you speaking from a jpa scholar's perspective or a non-jpa scholar? if you are a jpa scholar, then you should have been told about the universities that you are allowed to apply to. those would include the ivy league and ivy league standard universities, if the program hasn't changed from the previous year.
if you are not a scholar, then the list of all jpa recognized universities would be on their website. i believe that you need to look around the jpa website and you should be able to find the link.

yes.
yes.
you can't even have the complete application sent in la what early decision are they gonna make? 0.o
About ED, another note: if you're going for it, you must still present yourself and your application in the best light possible. The early deadline gives you no exemption from quality; most schools treat ED the same as they treat RD. Also the reason why ED acceptance rates tend to be higher is that recruited athletes get into schools then, and most applicants who apply would be very sure of their stats (read: good apps).
So if you're not sure if you can get good SAT and TOEFL scores before the ED deadline, don't apply and screw your chances of getting into your ED school, which, I assume, is a school you would want to go to very much.

You should make your case clearer. Your counselor can fill up the counselor's evaluation. If you take your tests by October and November, you should be able to rush to some of them. It just depends on when the ED deadline is.

JUST A SECOND. early decision deadlines are usually end of october or beginning of november. you will not make the deadline if you do not finish all your tests by october.
also remember that your sat reasoning test and sat subject tests must be taken separately. if you sit for reasoning in september, and subjects in october, you cannot resit any of them in time for the ED deadline.

in my opinion, it would be better to submit the latest results of your current program to show them where you stand right now, instead of showing AS level results as your MYR. if your AS level results are good, i guess you could include that somewhere else in your application.

Easy answer: yes.
I know of people who have done that and yet got in.
A rule of thumb: Try to put your latest results in. But let's say, you're applying ED and will not receive your current Mid Year results, then go ahead with your AS results.
Well i must the information above was really important .. but i must say usa application faq are really hard to understand ..

i don't think you phrased your question properly. what is non need-based? -.-
ANYWAY. see the point is no college [generally] will ever require you to show financial statements: if you don't show means you can pay and don't need aid. and then there are those schools that will offer financial aid. if you ever want to get financial aid you will always have to show financial statements.
tl;dr - NO COLLEGE requires financial statements, but if you don't show, you thereby tell them you can pay everything.

such questions are best posed to the colleges.
generally photocopies are okay. just don't photocopy a-college-specific stuff to all colleges. some colleges want special stuff/forms in. ask them.
as a rule, ask them.

i think a simple search on the internet will give you more information on the universities that offer this course than what you could possibly get from this thread on the same matter.

Hi to all forumers... I wanted to ask whether can one apply to US universities for a second Bachelor's degree? I mean applying as a freshman that is...
I read that some US universities does not accept applicants who wanted a second Bachelor's degree; especially need-blind ones... Is it true?

i am actually not too sure on this matter. one way in which you could go about this is by asking the respective universities that you wish to apply to whether or not they accept 2nd degree students. besides that, you could ask MACEE as they might be more knowledgeable on this matter and will be able to give you a general answer. however, as far as i know, i have not encountered anyone who has taken a second degree in the US. i think most people just do a masters degree after their bachelor's.

Hey there twxin. Are you an SPM leaver or still in sec. school? Well, if you're really sure about aero engr. Ill be glad to help you as I am pursuing this degree myself. Ill be transferring out to the states next year.
With aero engr, or any other engr type for that matter, it really boils down to what kind of education you want to receive. From what I have researched on, bigger schools will provide you with the career opportunities you are probably looking for, as aero companies often recruit heavily from these places. With private schools however (and some of these are also on the target list for employers), you get a more personalized take on the course you are pursuing, what with smaller class sizes. Additionally, private schools are more researched based so if you are looking into that, you should consider such schools.
Some of best schools for aero engr in the states include CalTech, Stanford, Georgia Tech, Purdue (they have their own airport =) ), Maryland, Texas-Austin, Texas A&M, University of Illinois, Michigan Ann Arbor and many more (you can easily look up their rankings online).
Private unis that are pretty good in this field would be USC and Embry Riddle aero university (personally, I find this school very much career oriented but go here only if you are VERY sure you want to pursue this degree).
Of course, if you are aiming for the ivies, the situation would be very much different altogether. Only one ivy offers aero(Princeton), cornell offers a minor in it. So, these are your options.
Hope that helps. PM me if you want to know more on this
Okay, so after that long reply, Ill post on what I originally came here for =)
Some universities request for a CERTIFIED TRANSLATION of transcripts and certificates. Does this mean I have to get them translated by a translator/commisionner of oaths? Or can I translate them myself and get someone to certify that they are indeed correctly translated? As in like with a stamp that says "certified translation". I really want to clarify this because I dont want to spend a ton of money translating my stuff.
Thanks.:P

Hi a newcomer here. My Form 4 finals are just over and I would have some free time during the Nov and Dec holidays. Hence I would like to start to get more information about the standardized test that I'll need to sit to apply for US Unis in the future..
Ughh when I was browsing through some of the threads in ReCom, I was terrified by the complicated and tiring application process to US Unis by many of the ReComers. Fortunately time is by my side(at least for now), so I decide not to overburden myself to understand the whole application process, and focus on how to prepare for the tests the I am about to sit in the future.
Or, perhaps I should focus on my SPM papers, rather than this? xD I always believe in early preparation.
Recently I got some SAT guide books and practice tests from a friend of my father(his daughter was on the ADP at Taylors). Most are from The Princeton Review and Arco. Through those books I get to know the question formats of SAT(and my mediocre English standard:cry). There are some questions I would like to ask regarding this matter.
Some basic information:
-16 years old
-studying in SMJK Kwang Hua, Klang
-in science stream
-interested in Physics and Mathematics, not really interested in biology
-willing to self study
-speaks poor English ==
Questions:
BASICS
1. Can a SPM leaver take the SAT, SAT2 and TOEFL? I heard that there are some SPM leavers flew for US after getting their SPM results. Or should I take the tests after my STPM/A-levels or while studying my STPM/A-levels?
2. How many SAT Subject Test subjects are required for applying to the ivies? What subjects should I take in accordance with my interest?
3. Where can I buy books to study for SAT, SAT2 and TOEFL?
4. What are the famous publishers for SAT, SAT2 and TOEFL reference and exercise books?
5. Are there tuition available for preparing the SATs?
ENGLISH
6. If I wrote a longer essay, would I get a higher score? By googling I found out that most websites say so. Therefore it would be better for me to ask around here as most ReComers here are more experienced.
7. How can I build up my vocabulary and improve my style of writing?
8. Should I use American English spelling or the normal British English spelling when writing?
9. Is it possible to improve in the Critical Reading section by doing more exercises? It seems very hard for me now.
PHYSICS & CHEMISTRY
10. The syllabus covered is definitely wider than our SPM level right? If true, can anyone point out some areas that I need to study on by myself as it is not covered in the SPM syllabus? *lazy*
MATHEMATICS I/II
11. Is it good enough to use a Casio fx-570MS calculator to answer the questions? Or a more sophisticated graphing calculator is essential to handle the questions?
BIOLOGY
12. Can I not take Biology for the SAT Subject tests, as I am interested in only Physics and Mathematics?
CHINESE
13. I discovered that the Chinese test questions are seriously easy and are only at primary school level. Should I take the Chinese paper?
TOEFL
14. How can I train myself for the reading and speaking section? I have difficulties speaking fluent English as I am from a Mandarin-speaking family and I study in chinese-medium school(SMJK).
I hope that my post is not too long >< Help is very appreciated.

I can help u answering some of the questions but I think the best reply would be from the seniors here. To be honest, coming from the same place, I understand that applying to ivies are somehow harder especially if you come from my school. But it takes some persuasion and some efforts to explain to your teacher and so on to really make a good application package. But put that aside, Klang is not only famous for Bah Kut Teh, I think the only problem I face right now is about the application. So I guess it's the same for you and almost a lot of people who do not have teachers who are familiar with US Application. Like i said, find some initiative to really explain to your school's teachers about US. I am having trouble at this but I have to shove it aside first. SPM coming.
It's nice that you start early and I actually have not been starting yet.
Nice to meet you from Klang. Restless is from Klang too. Your School.

1. Can a SPM leaver take the SAT, SAT2 and TOEFL? I heard that there are some SPM leavers flew for US after getting their SPM results. Or should I take the tests after my STPM/A-levels or while studying my STPM/A-levels?
==> There's no limit to when you can take the exam. As long as you understand the subject and can score in it. In US, it's not uncommon for 12 - 14 years old to take SAT to go into thse gited programs.
2. How many SAT Subject Test subjects are required for applying to the ivies? What subjects should I take in accordance with my interest?
Up to the Ivy, Harvard = 3. Most of the rest, 2.
3. Where can I buy books to study for SAT, SAT2 and TOEFL?
You're already very lucky living in Klang. Try Kinokuniya, Borders or MPH.
4. What are the famous publishers for SAT, SAT2 and TOEFL reference and exercise books?
Princeton Review, Barron, Kaplan. This used to be the big 3.
5. Are there tuition available for preparing the SATs?
Search your local area. No idea.
ENGLISH
6. If I wrote a longer essay, would I get a higher score? By googling I found out that most websites say so. Therefore it would be better for me to ask around here as most ReComers here are more experienced.
Wait, is this for SAT? Generally, longer essay have higher score. Only because they give more chance to show your command of English. However, if you can write a fantastic yet short essay, it's all the same. There's a time limit during the exam.
7. How can I build up my vocabulary and improve my style of writing?
Read and write?
8. Should I use American English spelling or the normal British English spelling when writing?
Preferably American, although I don't think it matters that much now.
9. Is it possible to improve in the Critical Reading section by doing more exercises? It seems very hard for me now.
Understand and analyze the pattern and rule behind them. Faster result.
PHYSICS & CHEMISTRY
10. The syllabus covered is definitely wider than our SPM level right? If true, can anyone point out some areas that I need to study on by myself as it is not covered in the SPM syllabus? *lazy*
Search for it yourself. It's in the book.
MATHEMATICS I/II
11. Is it good enough to use a Casio fx-570MS calculator to answer the questions? Or a more sophisticated graphing calculator is essential to handle the questions?
Can't remember. The level is not that high.
BIOLOGY
12. Can I not take Biology for the SAT Subject tests, as I am interested in only Physics and Mathematics?
Sure.
CHINESE
13. I discovered that the Chinese test questions are seriously easy and are only at primary school level. Should I take the Chinese paper?
It's up to you.
TOEFL
14. How can I train myself for the reading and speaking section? I have difficulties speaking fluent English as I am from a Mandarin-speaking family and I study in chinese-medium school(SMJK).
Read more books. Speak it. Get out of your comfort zone.

hey there. i am just going to add on to what capablanca wrote.
2. i believe princeton and yale may require 3 subject tests as well. all the rest need at least 2, and they may have certain requirements on which subjects to take based on the major that you intend to pursue. for details, you can check the universities' websites.
4. Arco, mcgraw-hills, and collegeboard are also pretty popular.
5. i believe that there is a company called the princeton review in kl that offers tuition for the SAT. i am not too sure about the location so you will have to check that up.
10. the syllabus definitely covers more than what is covered in spm. you can actually get a good grasp of the material covered on the test by just going through the guide books for the tests. to make the concepts clearer, an a level/stpm book may help although the material covered on the test is not as deep as the a levels or stpm do.
11. the casio calculator may actually be enough. the graphing calculator may only come in handy if you try to solve questions by graphing the equation and finding a solution form there. once you do sufficient practice, you will know whether you need it or not.
13. sometimes it would depend on your university as they may like their candidates to take a foreign language subject test, but if you are a native chinese speaker, then i don't know whether taking chinese as a subject test will count for much, as i once knew someone in your position.
hope this helps.

CHINESE
13. I discovered that the Chinese test questions are seriously easy and are only at primary school level. Should I take the Chinese paper?
i will only answer this question because you could use this one more answer.
consideration one: colleges might not be impressed with you because you're a native chinese speaker anyway.
consideration two: many native chinese speakers will try to do this as well so you'd better be scoring perfect, else you're gonna get a terrible score.
consideration three: are you really that desperate for that extra subject? three subjects are good enough. from what it seems you have math2, physics and chemistry.
consideration four: somehow i am of the impression that the only chinese with listening test center is in penang, and it only happens once a year [november test date]. be prepared if you really want to walk that path.
tl;dr: don't.

So I guess I better not take the chinese subject as 3 is enough.
And start studying those subjects
:\ Next time I won't be lazy to search
EDIT:
One more small question, If I were to apply after finishing my SPMs next year, what are the high school results that I will need to attach with the application? Form 5+SPM only or would I still need my form 4 results?
Plus, won't the SAT test dates interfere with the SPM exams if I plan to sit for my SATs at Nov/Dec next year?

I understand, just that most of the people are sitting the SAT at the year end period.
They're taking at the end of the year cause some of them are the scholars under scholarship and have only a couple months to prepare. Similarly, most postpone their exam date so that they could prepare fully. If you feel that you prepared enough, just take it early in the year.
Thanks for all the help :laugh

yes, you will still need your form 4 results and maybe even your results from forms 3 and 2. colleges usually ask for 4 years' worth of results. checking the application form to your university will be a good indicator.

I am planning to send in all my SSR+ISS etc by this week. Small prob is.. I send the copies to the admissions office address of the respective Unis isit? I know this is a dumb question, but just to be 100% sure. :P
one more thing, do you think we can just fax them over? save money.. lol.
Ask Them Please. Email them. Search for their online CHAT/HELP which you guys might miss out.
Seriously, if you're thinking of SAVE MONEY, why not apply online?
If you don't send to their Respective Undergraduate Offices, are you going to apply for graduate studies? =3

Because I don't understand how to send our transcripts etc online.. I mean, do we scan them? I have sent the rest of my app online, just this part I'm a little unsure about.
And yes, I've just emailed them, but I was hoping someone here could give me a faster answer because the answer seems obvious enough. and another yes-- I'm paranoid, so going with my gut doesn't suffice for me :P hence the post.
Thanks =)
I am not sure about scan or not. One of my App which I submitted online and I miss out my transcript unintentionally. I recheck the system and it showed that my transcript is missing. I email them and they told me I can airmail it over. That's my case.
For your's, better still, ask them. =)
Faster answer? You need to mention the name of school(s) you applying eh, who knows anyone here got special contact that can be given out? :nod

I asked my senior back in my Sec School, and I seriously got contacts which solve my problem/doubt within days. However, I do not recommended here by giving my example. Hope you get me. Try get back to your high school seniors who're really friend to you. That's what i mean.

What does having your teaher's decision to do stuff online affect anything? He just send his recommendation online, other than that. the SSR, MYR etc are all your own responsibility.
If you want to send your certs, be my guest. But don't send the whole pack, pick those which are noteworthy.

1)do i nid to get the translated transcripts certified b4 scanning????cuz technically my teacher's uploading it rite?
2)since we're doing everything online,am i the one who fills out the current year courses section of the SSR n MYR or is my counselor gonna do it?
3)i read in another thread(couldn't rmb which...been reading all these posts like mad) that it's not advisable to send all our extracurricular certs........so a resume would suffice?but wouldn't our resume be unfounded?i mean i'm gonna be honest abt all my activities la but don't we nid to send some kind of proof????
hope u guys can help me out....super desperate......hahahha...lol.... thanks in advance!!!!!
if that teacher is just doing a teacher recommendation, your SSR, MYR and IS are not going to be affected. if that teacher is acting as your counselor and filling up the SSR, MYR and IS for you, that's a different story. So if that's the case:
1. to make your forms look nice, i suggest you do that. shouldn't take too much effort anyway.
2. you will have to fill in your subjects in the 'academics' section.
3. sending in your certs would not affect anything. nor will not sending the certs decrease your chances. do it at your own discretion.

Hi LordFoong, I'm currently now in CMU (which, although not an Ivy League, is one of the new Ivies). Rest assured that Ivy League recognizes STPM, I got 2 semesters of Physics, Chem and Biology transferred and was waived from Chem Lab. I took STPM 2008 btw. So go ahead with your app!

Given that you don't really know how to competently and effectively use a computer (as illustrated by the fact that you were unaware of the keyboard shortcuts for copy and paste), I highly suggest not attempting to fill in the forms with Acrobat. Do it only if you absolutely know what you're doing. :)

So do we need to sent our SPM but where to find someone that can translate the transcript. Can just sent it without any translation?

I do recommend reading back the previous posts in this thread. SAT 1 is compulsory. SAT 2 depends on which on university you are applying to. AP doesn't affect admission at all, only if you want some extra credits to take higher level courses or to graduate earlier, it also depends on the uni whether it will accept your AP credits or not.
SAT 1(compulsory) > SAT 2 > AP

1. For me, I will translate it for its formality.
2. As for the certifications, you can find any school officials (including teachers and other staffs) who has a stamp which prints "This is a certified true copy of its original" or better "This is a certified translation of its original." or something similar.
Hope that helps. ~ ^^

There are a lot of financial aid options when it comes to studying in the U.S., although you have to do your research to find them.
To hear about the experience of one Malaysian student in trying to get financial aid read: http://blogs.voanews.com/student-union/2010/11/08/all-things-money/
Also, for more information/resources about financial aid and study abroad programs in general, check out: http://blogs.voanews.com/student-union/category/financial-aid/

ADP as in American Degree Transfer Program? ADP has both advantages and disadvantages. If you want to save money, and graduate as soon as possible, I'll say you should go for ADP :))
ADP students in Malaysia usually do 2 years here, and then transfer their credits to US universities (usually to state universities). Based on the number of credits allowed to be transfer, a student can usually transfer up to approximately 60 credits (usual number of credits required for graduation is 120).
However, you would not want to choose ADP if you aim for prestigious universities. Few students get into excellent schools through ADP. So far as I'm concerned, only 1 person got into Cornell University (Ivy League) through an ADP program here in Malaysia.
Good luck!
What are the disadvantages of ADP?

I have a few questions, I've read through the thread and did not find anyone asking this question.
1. Is there somewhere I can attach the financial affidavit in commonapp? Or should I mail it? Or should I ask the universities?
2. In the counselor's account, the counselor is asked to attach a school profile. Should I attach the school profile of my high school or the pre-u I am currently attending? Is it okay if I omit it?
Thanks in advance for anyone who helps. :)

1. are you talking about financial statements with regards to financial aid? the financial statements that you're talking about are not actually in commonapp - the statements are from different websites, one from collegeboard, another one from FAFSA. check the school respective school websites - there should be some kind of guide.
2. safest not to omit. ask the colleges you apply to if they want both or just pre-u. for me i just submitted just my pre-u stuff.

Just an update of JPA scholars in UNITEN who recently got offers for freshman admission for the fall of 2011:
MIT - 1 Admit
U California Berkeley - 2 admit
Northwestern Uni - 2 admit
Uni of Chicago - 1 admit
Illinois Urbana Champaign - 4 admit
Uni of Washington, Seattle - 10+ admit
There are some who got offers from the other UC's like UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego...will try to update as soon as possible.

I heard there were 3 who got into UCLA and 4 Malaysians who got in Univ. of California, Berkeley (so far), the others are probably not from Uniten.
(Edit: Also, to my knowledge, 1 got CMU (ED) and 3 got Univ. of Michigan)
Probably, perhaps from INTEC, INTI, Taylor's or other colleges. They could be private students too =) oh, should hear about Carnegie Mellon admits soon. Btw, heard of any potential Harvard College admits for this fall? I can't seem to find one who has been interviewed already.

I'm also waiting for CMU xD Why couldn't they just release all the decisions at once? Their mail takes about a month to arrive.

Wander why your parents aren't going to let you go to UC Betkeley. It is the best public university in the US. Which school are you admitted and is it the school you want? If you want to do engineering and CS (fact that you are also applying to MIT), Berkeley is among the top. It is big, a lot of hard work but it is worth it.

Hey. I would like to ask regarding the CommonApp. For the Mid Year Report (MYR), should I attach my ADP results or my Secondary School results?
I am currently applying to enter as a freshmen in 2012 in the midst of taking ADP as well. (in case it all fails, I will transfer as a sophomore next year)
Some people have told me that I should not submit my ADP results as it is a degree course which disqualifies me to apply as a freshmen.
Please advise. Thanks!

hi, i think you should send your ADP results for MYR. i don't see why you should exclude that because how else will you account for your time spent in between secondary school and fall 2012 [assuming you enter then]?
just write to the school/adcom and explain that ADP is considered a pre-university course and not a degree course. applying with ADP gives you that 12th year you need [which you will not have if you do not include it]. ask them prior to application if that is allowed.

Hi,
I am currently in the process of applying to US Universities.
But I am quite confused with the application process.
Do I need to submit financial affidavit form along with my application forms and supplements ? From what I found out, most universities require international students to submit financial affidavit. But my sponsor only allows 5 FA to be sent. So how if I want to apply to more than 5 unis?
For common apps, is it that I can scan and save all the documents(transcripts, supplements, etc) needed, and then upload it on common apps? For those unis that are not using common apps, we have to send everything by mail?
For art supplements, I have to burn it into a CD and send it by mail?
Thanks :)

Which financial affidavit is this? Some universities require you to submit at the time of application [or earlier] but a lot require it later. So check with the individual schools.
Yes you can scan.
For the arts supplement you can upload it online. There is a section in Commonapp which allows you to upload your stuff online. BUT you have to check whether the respective schools want the Commonapp arts supplement or not. Some schools have their own Arts supplement and the details of how to send material are included in the Application website. Sometimes you have to upload it on their own server, sometimes they want a video so it really depends.

Thanks, Jia Hui! So, I send an e-mail to the admissions office for each university which I am applying to and explain that I am taking ADP as a Grade 12 equivalent course? I won't be needing my college to release a statement that ADP is considered Grade 12 right? Because the counselors in my college refuse to help me with that as they persistently said ADP is a DEGREE program. :( And they keep telling me i should just transfer as it is easier but i really really want to go there as a freshmen. Plus, the universities I am applying to does not accept transfers.

This is probably not going to be helpful, since I know almost zero about ADP, but:
Suppose you stay in ADP (i.e. without doing transfers or what). Is that possible? Can you get a Bachelor's degree, or an Associate degree?
If not, do you think that is "proof" to say that ADP is just some preparational programme?
Just a thought.

Suppose you stay in ADP (i.e. without doing transfers or what). Is that possible? Can you get a Bachelor's degree, or an Associate degree?
If not, do you think that is "proof" to say that ADP is just some preparational programme?
Just a thought.
It is not possible to get a degree in ADP without transfer. This is because the colleges in Malaysia usually only offered general introductory college classes but not the upper level courses necessary to major in and graduate.

Plus, the universities I am applying to does not accept transfers.
where are you taking ADP? maybe you can try to talk to seniors who have applied to freshman intake via ADP from your school? if i were you, i would just explain to the admissions committee that ADP is your equivalent of year 11 & 12 or something.
maybe talk to your counselors. just tell them you are looking at top schools which don't accept transfers or don't accept ADP credits. then just 'angkat' them and tell them how good it will be for the college and the program if you can get admission there. tell them many people do it to... so why do they want to lose out?

I have talked to my counselor and she has agreed to help me although she said it is extremely rare that an ADP student applies for freshmen. Hopefully it will pan out well! Then, I will put up a guide online on applying despite undergoing ADP. A guide that is nowhere to be found. :(
Sorry but one more question just to calculate the rough estimate of the total application fees. The total application fees include: International application fees via commonapp (75usd per school), sending SAT score fees and TOEFL fees. Is there anything else I'm missing out?

Hi, I'm from Malaysia, did Taylor's ADP, went to San Jose State for undergrad, and then to Stanford University for my MBA. I'm starting an admissions consulting service with another Stanford grad with a master's in education.
As immigrants from Asia, we have a keen interest in helping Asian students gain admission in to top universities in the United States. We have a great mix of admissions experience with one of us being a late life transplant from Malaysia and the other having grown up in the US. We navigated the education system successfully and want to help you do the same.
In order to help you, we would love your thoughts on your admissions needs. Please fill out this 4 question survey and enter in to a drawing for a free 30 minute consultation on picking schools and admissions strategy!
