Hong Leong Foundation Scholarship Programme

http://www.hongleong.com/community/2007/default.htm

Date for submission of application is 09 April 2007

Sorry bout this. As I understand, Hong Leong Bank is not offering scholarship to foundation students. Only Diploma and Degree. Should the title be 'Hong Leong Diploma/Degree Scholarship Programme'? Please kindly rectify me if i'm wrong. Thank you.

starlemon,if you want to apply local matriculation by now, honestly, its over already. I mean you cant apply it by now. the dateline for application is October before our Spm.

Okay, regarding the connection thingy. Form 6 and Local matriculation do have connection. If you're selected for Matriculation, your name will not appear in the form 6 name list.

About JPA and Bank Negara.... i'm nt sure..but i up til now,i havent came across the rumours of any such connection.

Hi

I have a question about ASEAN scholarship.

Assuming that I am offered the scholarship to study singapore's pre-uni programme, is it that I have to apply again for the asean undergraduate scholarship after i completed the pre-uni programme? Where can I obtain the details on the asean undergraduate scholarship? I mean details like requirement and eligibility. I have searched it online but just couldn't find. Can any one pls show me the direct link to that information? Thanks very much for the help.

from what i read at the "syarat-syarat" page,it says we need "surat tawaran". this implies that we actually need to apply to enter a college/university before we apply this scholarship.

"pengurusan" means management. Maybe something towards business management or related courses...

"nama kursus" is the course offered by a college/university......

the Pre-U ASEAN and undergraduate ASEAN are administered separately. the UG ASEAN is also administered by separate universities (NUS, NTU etc). You can find info on the respective university webpages.

wilson....
the ASEAN scholarship for pre u and undergrad is different...
for the undergrad, normally the respective uni will be the one who decides whether you'll be granted the scholarship or not......like NUS for example and if i'm not mistaken, you'll have to be enrolled into one of the courses before you can actually apply it....

i applied for the ASEAN pre-u scholarship last year but well....wasn't that lucky....

and just a piece of advice from me, if you're selected for the test (for the pre-u scholarship), you should really be prepared....especially for the english paper because the vocabulary used is....oh my...i just couldnt find a word to describe it....just be prepared.....

hope that helps....:)

im totally aware about the prerequisites and minimum cut off point that needs to be met before flying off to the particular destination but my question was,for accountancy under JPA scholarship in OZ,are we allowed to complete the 4 year honours course (that is if we qualify for it of course)or we just have to make do with 3 under JPA

im asking for a friend,so i have no idea why she specifically asked about australia,i guess since getting accountancy in UK is pretty slim, australia will be next on her preferred list

I read it somewhere in this forum.. Somebody has called the worker there. They said that if you apply online, no need to send copies of certs. If you apply via mail, then copis of certs are needed.. Just in case, if you are so paranoid, I suggest you just send 1 copy to them.

but, the closing date was 26 mar..
anyway, thank for opinion..
i will call them asap..

Hello everyone! I am a 2007 SPM leaver. I am shortlisted for both JPA and TNB scholarships interview. Both for overseas program.

But the problem is, these two interviews are on the same day! Jpa is at Penang, my hometown; and TNB is at Kajang.

I probably will go for JPA. Is it possible to request to change the date of TNB interview?
What is your suggestion?

Please advice.. Thank you ^-^

it's never a waste to call up and ask them.

my educamp fell on the same day that I'm supposed to go for a holiday oversea. so I called up Petronas and asked if they could change my interview date as my ticket has already been booked. as a result they changed my interview date to one of the earlier batches.

so yeah, it shouldn't be a problem if they have more than 1 interview session.

Just make a call to either one and ask if it's possible to change either dates. Ask them an alternative date and i'm sure they'll be able to do that since they'll be conducting a few sessions. Good luck!

I don't think JPA would allow you to shift your time slot though, if they were to entertain one, imagine the mroe numbers they would have to do it next time.. I'd say push for TNB to change the date..

They don't state that you have to enrol in the colleges or universities first , but you have to mention the universities/colleges to them . Furthermore , I don't think you'll know whether can you enrol into those colleges/universities before the closing date . It's better to call them

yes, i also think like that..we need to do all preparation to form 6 so..like registration, buying school uniform, and somemore reference books ( some teacher may recommend some form 6 reference books the day we are going into form 6 classes)..if we granted jpa, then we quite ,isnt our effort of doing this preparation as well as paying up all the incidental fees being wasted?

i wanted to apply last year but decided against it. they need your results form form 4 and form 5 onwards. they also need you to translate alll your certificate fully.means full translation. i don't know how to do the translation and ended up not applying for it. and my exam result for form 4 and form 5 is not even complete and worse of all my school is in another state. too troublesome for me. you also need a few person to write comment about you. thats all i know about this scholarship.Your parents also need to be AIG agent for you to apply this scholarship.

Hi Bali

From my experience, Shell scholarship most important is you pass the interview stage as the competition from many other students is very very very HIGH.

During interview session, they ask lots of question, lots and lots of question.....
almost til you cant answer. They looking for a leader that knows a lot of things.

Hope all the best for you. Do update us your results

Hi. I need help filling my scholarship form..

1. for sports day events, my school don't provide any certs, so is it possible for me to state it at the "achievements" site? the events that i've won is stated in my letter of recommendation though.. or should i ask my teacher to verify for me on a separate piece of paper?

2. i've joined quite a number of basketball tournaments but i play for a club (not under school) . so under the "level of participation", what should i put? the basketball tournaments are joined by teams all over selangor.. is it considered at district level?

thanks in advance!

1. Not very sure about this. Maybe you should ask your teacher to give you a cert regarding the activities you participated and won.

2. You represent your school to participate in district level competition. The same goes to state level. You win in the district level then you will represent district and proceed to state level competition. So, in your case, I think you represented your district to participate in a state level competition. :)

Btw, are you a spm09 leaver?

You apply through an agency or by yourself. Check the websites of the unis you're interested in and find out what the procedure is like. I think for Australia all you need is your IELTS score and copies of your official transcripts. Also, I believe that there's some "Australia Education" fair soon (or it may have passed already, who knows). You should go there for some information.

Hi Xiana! :)

Yes, indeed, if you do well in your pre-U (A-Levels or STPM) and get into one of the top unis in the world for dentistry (like Ivy league standard, e.g. Oxford, Cambridge, Yale, Harvard, etc) you can apply for a scholarship from JPA called the 'Biasiswa JPA Ivy League dan Setara' or 'JPA Ivy League and Equivalent Scholarship'.

If you do STPM and enter a local government uni like Universiti Malaya for dentistry, you can apply for the JPA Local Scholarship to sponsor your dentistry course locally.

Hope this helped. Try your best in your pre-U course! Jia you! :)

Hi again Xiana.

Oh, for foundation... I think it's a little harder to get any scholarships if you do foundation courses. But I think it's possible if you enter AIMST for dentistry (and your SPM result was decent, at least 9A's if not mistaken- then I think JPA might would sponsor you if you apply. Or if you manage to enter a local branch of a foreign uni (like Monash) for dentistry like if you do MUFY (Monash University Foundation Year)- then you can apply for a JPA local scholarship too.

Other than that, I am not too sure about scholarships. I think that STPM and A-Levels give you better chances of getting a scholarship actually.

Monash KL doesn't offer dentistry though.

AIMST is an option. :laugh Agree with mirianchoo, if you are keen on getting a scholarship at undergraduate level, get into Pre u courses established and recognised internationally like form 6, IB or a levels. :laugh

Ok, the example i gave about Monash was bad but the main thing I was trying to say is that it is possible to get a JPA scholarship if you enter any local branch of a foreign uni for your degree course. And who knows, maybe after you have finished your pre-U, Monash might already be offering dentistry, haha (unlikely but possible) :P.

There's a thread on JPA tajaan tambahan for Ivy League Universities and equivalent here (http://www.recom.org/forum/showthread.php?t=7411). You may find it useful :laugh

Oh, and if you unsuccessful in the quest for scholarships, you can try for JPA overseas loan. You can apply in your 2nd year of undergrad studies in JPA recognised universities abroad. If I'm not mistaken, if you sign a contract with the government for a certain period (10 years i think), the loan repayment willl be waived :laugh

Yes. It a a special offer for pursuers of critical courses like med, dentistry and pharmacy. Provided you sign a 10 year contract.

From what I know, for the Ivy league universities, it doesn't really matter which pre U programme you attended. You must have been granted admission as JPA requires you to have an offer letter from the universities. :laugh

If i apply 4 AIMST ,then JPA will straight away offer me the scholarship?? i've consider AIMST,but they only offer me partial scholarship 4 foundation, and i think that is not given by JPA. Btw,i got 6 A+,3A,1A- and 1B for my SPM. Oh, if I enter any local branch of a foreign uni for my degree course, will I have the chance to apply for JPA again?? Is the result based on my foundation, what's the minimum requirement 4 me to apply??

Hi Xiana, I am really sorry but after checking with various sources from the web, I think that you have already missed the deadline for the JPA PIDN (Program Ijazah Dalam Negara) scholarship to AIMST, Monash, other local branches of foreign unis, etc. Your other friends have already applied for it (right after the SPM results were released) and the results for the scholarship are already out...

However, there are still many options for you. For example, you can apply for a local JPA scholarship if you take STPM and enter a local government uni. Or, if you can enter one of the top unis in the world, you can apply for a JPA Ivy League and Equivalent scholarship. Another alternative is the loan repayment mentioned by cycycy. Really sorry that the AIMST and local branches of foreign unis options are not available anymore due the missed deadline...

Cycycy,
how about the JPA tajaan tambahan for Ivy League Universities ?? Is this scholarship offered to those who took STPM and A level only??:)

For this, as long as you hold an offer from their (JPA) desired universities you are fine. JPA does not really look into your Pre-U qualification/results. I mean, they place more importance on the ranking of the university in which you are applying rather than your pre-u results. So as long as you have a valid pre-u qualification that will be alright.

Hi, I have a question regarding study loans/grants or scholarships offered to students who got accepted to universities in the US. I studied at an American university for two years until last year, when my parents were unable to continue funding me. Is there anyway I can get help on this?

Scholarship discussion thread, not one to condemn scholars :oh Anyway, since you asked, why not pose the question to government then ? I've heard plenty of stories from people, that those scholars in UK (MARA/JPA) are just rich kid from parents with connections. The idea of a scholar being from humble backgrounds is not always the case as I have seen plenty of scholars who flaunt around with the latest gadgets and nicest clothes in campus. The other POV is that, these students have rich parents. Nothing better to spend on, simple as that :oh

PS, any senior reading this ? Plenty of unanswered questions above. No wonder so many newbies are posting in random threads :oh

Yup. As long as you fall between the year of birth stipulated by MOE.

I am studying in Lower Six this year. Since holiday is around the corner, should I try out the SAT test. I would like to enroll in NUS, so I was wondering is it necessary to take the SAT test. Would it increase my chance of being recruited ? BTW, where can I take the SAT test

1. SAT is for USA universities and colleges.

2. NUS does not require SAT but you can apply NUS using SAT test scores.

3. NUS treats all applicants equally as far as I know.

4. The timing is right for SAT if you're serious to apply to USA (LACs, Ivies, Public Universities in USA).

But it depends. Like for me, I finish my A-level in May/June and will probably get my results on August. Because of that, I need to apply with SAT I and II results. For those taking STPM, you guys are in luck. You aren't required to.

Exactly. That's what happen in my college too. I am currently studying in a college where the students are mostly sponsored by JPA and MARA. Not to be criticise anyone but some of the scholars really cant score well and they come from wealthy family. :huh and i was like: huh? why JPA chose them?

Well, it's just not in our place to criticize and even if we do, what good would it do ? Not like JPA/MARA will change their erroneous ways. The sad fact about it is, even if they don't meet their grades, their sponsorship won't be cut. They'll just be relocated to a local institution. Some of my college's JPA graduates failed to meet their cut off point and have secretly been relocated. Unfair I know, but what to do. Just have a good conscience in yourself that you worked hard and fair and square for your piece of the cake :)

Actually even the lecturers here help them during the real A level exams. The lecturers just gave the answers to them in the exam hall. It is so unfair. And they still can't reach the cut-off point though. I was like... speechless.

Whatever happens, don't let that unfairness effect you. Let them have their way at cheating, let them cheat themselves in life for all you care. Fact in life is that cheating and taking every short cut to live successfully will come back to nip you in the butt. Think of it.

They continue to cheat. Fine, let them feel the real pressure of actually studying hard when they go overseas (that is, if they make it) to study. Let them feel the distress in what it actually means to fail.

They can't reach cut-off point. So? Let them be relocated, they will still have a bond to serve. They will still face the problem of government management. The only thing they can dream about is working with those prestigious MNC's of their dreams with that kind of past bugging them in their work resumes later.

The most important thing in studies is yourself and not others. :amuse

P.S. Anyone who feels insulted or vulnerable by this particular post, your job to do the soul-searching :)

Oh my....its like an obvious cheating...how can this happen??? its like paying the referee in a game to declare your victory when u didnt even play the game...cant believe they even do to this extent...to set a so called 'different' marking scheme for SPM cands is already bad enough....and now even in pre-uni they do this.

Not that you know it for the first time. :wink Skin colour does play a very huge weighting in scholarship offers. Just be honest.

The worst thing is that we cant do anything about that. We can only learn how to accept. Sigh. This is Malaysia.

Admin's note (Xon): We definitely cannot do anything to change this situation if we keep convincing ourselves to accept and adapt when we're suppose to be those pushing for change. By the way, I think we should cut down on digression here. :>

Interesting to see the angst created from the differences in perception of assessment and award granting. The school I represent have set out with one goal, to provide students without preference to any attribute access to 20 fully paid (subject to terms) IB Diploma scholarships each worth RM 90k over 2 years.

perhaps this will come some way to increasing the scope for opportunity.
