View Full Version : AutoMerge and Spoiler Hack .... and lots of new smilies
The title really says it all but I'll reiterate again.
In an effort to combact annoying double posting, I've installed the automerge hack to make all your double posting merge. If you think that it is annoying, think again. It is to make your life 10 times easier than before and to make our life (staff) easier too.
Spoiler hack is something you use in order to not spoil others. For example.
I know the winner of the XX tournament. His name is.....
Tada.. Joseph
It works that way.
And thanks to our very own dystopianday who installed a whole bunch of new smilies. Enjoy using them.
That's all I have for the news this time around. ReCom is still evolving and we will continue to update you on the latest happenings.
P/S: The spoiler hack doesn't work with Safari 3.1 for whatever reason. I'll try to deal with that asap but for now ... :ffwub Firefox is the best, I think. :ffwub
PP/S : I have changed the spoiler thingie and updated it further. I hope it works with safari now.

To add to Leen's announcement, this is the code that she used above (in case you don't know how to check it):
Tada.. Joseph
Yep.
And there's an addition to our spoiler tag. This time, it comes with description.
Example.
Eddie Irvine
And the code is:
Eddie Irvine
:nod :nod

The code for this one would be:
Eddie Irvine
(eer Leen it would be weird if I keep doing this :P)
All the necessary BBcode are in this thread (http://www.recom.org/forum/showthread.php?t=6225). That's why I didn't bother showing it here. Plus, whenever you want to know how someone does a certain trick, you can just quote and see the codes.

I know... but not every new member know the quote-to-see-code method, so we should just make things simpler for beginners by showing them the code straightaway. It's just adding [noparse] between the codes.
Sure thing. Gotta run now. :leen
It's awesome
Been wanting this for some time now. :thumbs

Do we have rules against abusing this tag? (Like hiding the whole post as a spoiler, just like this one?)

It means "So frustratingly complicated / so much work"

Like i said, there is no obligation for anyone to use it.
and it is not polite to just demean someone's hard work like how Sillyboy did...
I don't know if this is in the works but there needs to be some CSS to go with the spoiler tag. It looks a bit ugly as it is.
Also, Leen, I noticed most of the newly added smilies are located on someone's photobucket account!! That's not good for both the photobucket (the server gets hammered everytime someone views a post with the smilies) and visitors (the browsers need to fetch the smilies from photobucket). Can you please upload the smilies to recom ftp server instead? If the images copyright is an issue that prevent us from having them on our server, hotlinking the images from photobucket does not diminish the issue either.

I'll try to ask dystopianday about it. The images do come from photobucket and the reason why we did that was for convenience. I'm not too sure about the copyright issue since those smilies are used everywhere on the internet. XD I'll discuss this further with you after I check some things out.
As for the misusing spoiler, of course it is a no no. People should not use it for the sake of using it. Sometimes, I see people putting that tag for 20 times, making the person clicking it clicks 20 times before a small one line message shows up. That will be definitely a case of misusing. Like all hacks, it should not be misused.

@<hidden>,
This is the best that we can get so far for the spoiler tag. It is not installed for its aesthetic but rather for its functionality. So for now, no changes will be made to it. Sorry. :laugh

hmm... it will be easier to debug if it's standards compliant though...
^
In English please? :sweat
It's QEDX grrr! j/k
Adding something like this to the stylesheet would do the trick I think
.spoilerheader{
background: #aaaaaa;
}
.spoilerbody{
padding:0 1em;
background: #dddddd;
}

Hmm, I prefer 'so much work'

Just to clarify here. I'm in no way demeaning when I exclaimed complication regarding the new system. It was not meant to be personal at all! Please do not think otherwise. I'm merely suggesting that it will be hard for me to adapt to this new system, thus the words "Mah Fan"
^
Don't worry about it. There's nothing new about spoiler hack. It has been in existence for the past decades. What worries me more is your inability to accept an old system. :huh j/k j/k :laugh
Seriously, you don't have to use it if you don't. And thanks for your clarification too. :w00t

They say, you cannot teach old dogs new tricks.
But
You only become an old dog once you stop learning new tricks. :laugh
Oh no, I just found the cure to everlasting youth. Education. :nuts
@<hidden> (ah, I got your name right this time :nuts)
Are you trying to suggest to give the spoiler a button look or what? I mean, I see a lot of forums doing that but I'm actually pretty pleased with how this set of spoiler tags come out.

Leen,
Can we have all the codes for the smilies? It'll be useful. Thanks!

Just go to advanced reply box (instead of typing in the quick reply area, click "post reply"). You will see options of emoticon, and a link to "more". There you will have all your emoticons and all the codes.

Oh...I finally found it. It's at the very bottom of the page where it wrote "Smilies are on".
Just to update that I've uploaded all those photobucket smilies to our own server. Not sure about all those copyright crap but I doubt the photobucket album owner we used to hotlink the smilies even cared about it, so screw it ... if the original creators are fussy about copyright, why did they post their smilies on the interweb in the first place :headsmack
as long as our pages load faster now :roflmao
