Hi,
I'm currently a Poly student in Singapore. I am hoping that i can get into NUS/NTU this August. Is there any organisation that is offering a bursary/scholarship for Malaysian studying in Singapore other than KUOK foundation?

Dear weirdsalmonella,

NUS and NTU themselves administer ASEAN scholarships for students in the ASEAN region excluding Singapore, that means you. For more information, visit:

http://www.nus.edu.sg/oam/scholarship/nus_asean.htm

http://www.ntu.edu.sg/OAD/Scholarships/ASEAN+Undergraduate+Scholarship/

You can also search the Internet for more information. You might also be interested to check out other scholarships offered to Malaysians on our website by clicking Miscellaneous (top right corner of the screen) -> Web Links -> Scholarships. Good luck!

Dear Jiinjoo,

Thanks for the info. But i had already checked out the NUS/NTU scholarship. For the ASEAN scholarship, I don't think i'm eligible to apply for it since i din't take STPM/A Level. I'm graduating from Poly in Singapore and I had already applied for the Kuok Foundations scholarship. But, I'm still searching for others.

Since when did they require A-Levels? The NUS one clearly did not indicate it, and the NTU one only state the 3 criterias for those who took A-levels. Otherwise, you probably have to show them that you're worth it. From the website:

NUS: Eligibility criteria

a. All full-time NUS undergraduates matriculating or applying for admission in academic year 2004 - 2005, regardless of nationality will also be considered for the NUS Undergraduate Scholarship.

b. Only freshmen are considered for the scholarships.

NTU: Eligibility
All nationals (citizens and permanent residents) of a member country of ASEAN (except Singapore) are eligible to apply for the scholarships.

The scholarships are awarded based on academic merit and are very competitive. Candidates offering Singapore-Cambridge GCE 'A' Level Examinations should have:

- Very good results in the GCE 'A' Level Examination including 'S' papers
- Good SAT I score
- Impressive records of co-curricular activities indicating strong leadership potential

Candidates offering international qualifications should have outstanding academic results and extra-curricular activities.

And as an aside, I mentioned this in another thread, but I just want to reiterate: Scholarships are up to you to go get it. The structural barriers can be broken - if you ask for it and show them a good reason to give you the scholarship, then they will give it to you. In this case it is even better coz they didn't really mention anything. Just because most ASEAN applicants have A-levels doesn't mean you cannot make a trip to the admission office talk to the officers there.

(This goes to JPA as well, I know people who're on JPA, some full, some half scholarship, some loan etc. who didn't get straight-As, apply after Form 6 / A-Levels instead of Form 5, already in university etc. They asked, chances are not high, but some got it eventually)

There was a time where NTU couldn't fill up the "supply" for the scholarship (i.e. the applications were less than the number of places they were prepared to offer). If you're ok with the 3-year work thing, go for it! :)

Hopefully I am not making another mistake by posting my question in here cause although this forum is for scholarship studying in Singapore, my case is regarding loan but it is relatively quite similiar, I guess. Shouldn't have posted it in the "scholarships FAQ.."

I transferred this from the other thread :

The main thing that I want to post here is about my brother's problem - meaning I am helping him to post his question.

He is in Monash Uni, in PJ right now and recently he just got an offer from NUS to study there, but under student loan. He needs to give his reply by the 16th of May and he is still considering so I just want to ask the opinions of you guys about which one should he choose. I know that ultimately, the choice depends on him but any personal opinions and different views from ppl who have been to either Monash or NUS, or heard about it, will be extremely helpful~!

This is what he told me :
"if u have a choice between studying at a local private uni in malaysia and a uni in singapore, which will u choose..the difference is that the cost of the fees in malaysia mayb slightly expensive compared to singapore cuz the government of singapore is offering study loan for international students..but the con is u're bonded to the government or rather u got to work 3 years in any singapore listed companies..so let's say u've completed ur a levels n let's say again, they do not want to give u the asean scholarship , do you think u'll study in singapore or rather come back n study here??"

Personally, I haven't really consider what I will be doing after A Level cause I am still banking on JPA right now. Sure, will have to think about it soon...~! ;-)

His friend told him this :
the standard of education is higher n the cost of the whole course which may sum up bout 130k plus or minus depending how u manage ur money, which includes the fees, miscellanous like student permit, misc fees etc n also the monthly expenses..

I feel that money is not really a big issue as it is comparatively almost the same. Just the quality and stuff. So, anyone who can give any help is very, very welcome~! =) I am not that experienced even if I have been staying in Singapore for the past 4 months. Uni life is definitely quite different from JC so I don't think I will be that suitable be of any useful help~! =)

Any feedbacks or comments are extremely valued~! TQ!

I think NUS is a really good university. When I was in HC, we used to go to NUS to listen to the talks and lectures by visiting professors. Also, they have a lot of research opportunities and good foreign profs, something you may not find in Malaysia.

For the record, NUS was ranked No. 5 in the entire Asia-Pacific region.

I don't know if I answered this in the "other thread"...

Yes, cost aside, they are pretty comparable in most cases, i.e. most Malaysians studying there take the loan.

You'll work for 3 years in SG listed companies. You're not bonded to the government (of course you can work in certain civil servant positions that are open to foreigners).

If your concern is money and only money, SG is a better bet because it is either cheaper (you get NUS-ASEAN) or the same (take the loan).

If your concern is your career, then it depends on what you want to work on. Most people consider the 3 years in SG a career building experience. After all, it can't be too bad coz there are so many multi-national conglomerates (MNC) there to work for if you're looking to move up the corporate ladder elsewhere in the world. All SG is asking by giving you cheap tuition is the best years of your life.

If your concern is the NAME of the school, then the choice is obvious.

If your concern is distance from home, then the choice is obvious.

If your concern is proximity to your family, then the choice is also obvoius.

If your concern is T1-LAN connection to the Internet, then the choice is also obvoius. (There's a tradeoff - you will find most of the Internet blocked)

So, bottom line, it depends. muahahahaha :)

Nope, you didn't reply in the other thread. Anyway, I took it out already... =)

Thanks, jiinjoo, for the help~!

To weirdsalmonella, sorry if I mis-used your thread~! And also, which Poly are you studying at? I thought that generally Malaysians who chose to study in Singapore will go to JCs to do A Level? Why choose Poly then?

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) do have scholarship for Malaysian STPM students, like the Nanyang Scholarship and the ASEAN scholarship. Those two scholarships have no bonds, and the performance of these scholarship recepients are checked from time to time to ensure that they maintain a set academic score.

However, as these scholarships only cover the subsidised tuition fee (S$6220 P.A. for AY2004-2005), students still need to take the Singapore MOE tuition grant, which will require the student to work in a Singapore registered company for 3 years upon completion of his or her degree programme.

For Computer Engineering, NTU is the first university to have the course in Singapore. The course is accredited by the Institution of Electrical Engineers in the United Kingdom at M.Eng. level, in addition to being accredited by the Professional Engineers Board of Singapore.

I would only know about the performance of the lecturers and it's education standards when I start studying there in July, though.

I believe the FAQ at http://www.ntu.edu.sg/OAD/International+Students/Frequently+Asked+Questions/ has the answer to your question, if you're asking about entry requirements in general that is.

Dont know whether this is the authoritative ranking you want from
Asiaweek (http://www.asiaweek.com/asiaweek/features/universities2000/schools/multi.overall.html)

I heard from someone that Malaysia doesn't accept Singapore U grads, sort of a politic thingy, thus am a bit worried about this aspect. Are my worries unfounded?

Between NUS and monash. I have a friend who is entering monash because he isn't able to enter in NTU/NUS. So if you are eligible, I encourage you to think about it.

For nanyang U it definitely is better known for its engineering and bus courses compared to NUS

about the 3 years bonded u have to consider the job market over there right now- which is *hopefully* looking up for fresh grads. Anyway with enough $ just cut off the bond if you are thinking of returning or venturing overseas for Masters and the like. Hmm...

This is a long list, but the full list is at http://www.eghrmis.gov.my/indeks.asp?url=iktiraf

I think the degree from Singapore Universities are accepted in Malaysia. I didn't go and check, but you can check on the list from the link above. Plus, I think there are some of high-ranked officers in Malaysia government graduated from universities in Singapore.

Here's whats on its site:

University of Singapore (sebelum dicantum dengan University Nanyang)(bukan National University of Singapore)

not very clear is it...?

The Malaysian government does indeed accept Singaporean university graduates, but not all of the courses are recognized.

For engineering courses, the Board of Engineers Malaysia will consider the degrees from Singapore on a case to case basis.
