3 Apr - youngyew: I have just merged two threads ("STPM 2008" + "Hey! STPM 2008 students come here!") over here. This is to avoid two parallel threads discussing the same thing.

Come Come Come !!

Here we are in form 6 .. And we shall battle it to the end !!

Good luck to every form 6 students !!

Be it Upper or Lower ..

We shall prove to the Gov that they wanna suppress us with form 6 ..

We shall suppress them with our four flats ..
And make them headache about increasing universities funding !!

Gambate !!

For Maths, last time we used the text book published by Pelangi in school. It was ok lar. But for Form 6 Maths, u cant juz be using one book. Attempt past year questions from time to time whenever u learn a topic. That isnt enough. U can do exercises from different books. Juz keep doing them if u wanna score in STPM Maths.

Err... for Biology, as far as i know, books by Fajar Bakti r good (Volume 2 strongly recommended).

Both Organic and Physical, using Tan Yin Toon's shd be fine...
I took STPM last yr~

For inorganic chem, i suggest to use longman one.

why dun they have inorganic chem by fajar bakti tan yin toon?

sujend

i prefer longman for physical and organic since they down dump too many information like tan yin toon's..
hehe

What about inorganic chemistry ??

For inorganic, u can use any of the books available.
(I used Pelangi's) There wont be sufficient information, so do get extra information from various sources, Internet etc.

Hey. Is it possible to take economics as an extra subject in form6? Btw, as for cgpa, they only consider the best 4 subjects, right? So it wouldn't really matter much if I get a B for my additional subject, rite? It's not like SPM, where they want straight As, is it?

shrenka

Yes, choose the best 4. But, PA must be counted.

So I can take 5 subjects and get a B for my additional subject and still stand an equal chance of getting into Public U as those with 4A? :D

Aiyo, just ignore the homework.

Do whatever you think will help you to score in STPM.

During my form 6 studies, most of the homework given by school teachers were basically useless and would only serve to increase my burden. What I did?

Just ignore it.

But my physic teacher also helps a lot by giving us a moderate quantity of homework ..

In my opinion .. Balance the amount of time used for both homework and revision is the key .. Am i right ?

Actually to understand biology .. You need a strong desire to know understand mother nature .. You must have the instinct to learn ..

You will also need a solid English command ... as in biology there are plenty of discription .. :D

Ow...

Volume one takes me 6 months to understand all the key ideas and concept..

As for memorising .. I'm still working hard on it now.. Apply all the smart learning ways to memorise them..

Mnemonics and mind maps are good..

A systematic way of learning is also good..

And keep onto your syllabus as strict as you can... !!

Erm.. I'm from SMK Ibrahim .. Sungai Petani, Kedah.

Ever heard of it ? I doubt you do... AHAHA ~

lawteoh
14-08-2007, 05:42 PM
haha... aliens? U mean like this? 5^2 ?

ok.. here's a nice question..

Its an arithmetic progression..
First term is k, last term is 4k and difference is 3. Example, k, k+3, k+6...until 4k
Given that k is a positive integer.. Find the sum of the odd integers between 2k and 4k.

If that is too simple, try proving this.

A geometric series has first term 1 and the common ratio r is positive. The sum of the first 5 terms of a G.P. is twice the sum of the terms from the 6th to the 15th inclusive. Show that r^5 = [(1/2) ((3^(1/2)) -1)]

Or this...

The sum of the first n even terms of an arithmetic series (2nd term + 4th term + 6th term +..) is greater than the sum of its first n odd terms (1st term + 3rd term +..) by 4n. Find the common difference of the series.

I think the last would be harder than the first 2 questions.. lol..

1. Sn=(n/2)(2a+(n-1)d)
a=2k, d=6 (since odd number)

=(n/2)(2(2k)+(n-1)6)----(1)

L=4k, so (n-1)6+2k=4k
(n-1)=k/3
n=k/3+1---(2)
(2) in (1),
Sn=((k/3+1)/2)(4k+2k)
=k^2+3k

2. S5= 2(S15-S5)
a(r^5-1)/(r-1)= 2(a(r^15-1)/(r-1)-a(r^5-1)/(r-1))
2r^15-3r^5+1=0
2(r^5)^3-3r^5+1=0
(r^5-1) is factor of the equation
(r^5-1)(2(r^5)^2+2r^5-1)=0
then use the quadratic equation to get the r^5=[(1/2) ((3^(1/2)) -1)] . lazy to type :P
notice: r^5=/=1 as it is G.P. and the +/- of square root, we take + as it is positive

3.(n/4)(a+d+L)-(n/4)(a+L-d)=4n
a+d-a+d=16
d=8

i am not sure about the answer for 1st n 3rd question...

Sorry.. A correction in the first question. Given that k is a positive integer, find the sum of the odd integers between 2k and 4k. sorry... Perhaps u could try it out again? lol

But question 3, nget gnet.. U get it wrong! The working is actually longer than that... involves more equation...

About question 2, I use other methods in proving.. which involves the formula a^3 - b^3... oh well... Maybe I can consider ur method.. But u 100 percent knows how to prove it right? hehe..

checking: let a=a d=8
1st term: a
2nd term: a+8
3rd term: a+16
4th term:a+24
5th term:a+32
6th term:a+40

2nd+4th+6th-(1st+3rd+5th)=3a+72-(3a+48 )=24=4x6 (notice: it is 4n)

The 3rd question..

Let a, d be its first term and common difference..

Sum of n even terms
= (a+d) + (a+3d) + (a+5d) +....+[(2n)th term]
= (a+d) + (a+3d) + (a+5d) +...+ [a + (2n-1) d]

(The 2n is put coz its the last even term.. And u can't deduce whether the nth term is even or odd right? So, the simplest method is to times the nth term with 2.. U could check it with the (4n)th term also since every number times by 4 would be even.. The result would be the same.. )

From here, the first term is a+d and the common difference =2d..

Thus, Sum of the n even terms
= ( n/2) [(a+d) + a + (2n-1)d]
= ( n/2) [2a +2nd]
= n (a +nd)

So far ok?

Now let's go to the sum of the n odd terms

= a+(a+2d)+(a+4d)+...+[a+(2n-2)d]
= ( n/2) [a + a + (2n-2)d]
= ( n/2) [2a + 2(n-1)d]

Ok.. Now the difference between the 2 sum..

n (a +nd) - ( n/2) [2a + 2(n-1)d] = 4n
na + n^2d -na -n^2d +nd = 4n.
nd=4n

Thus, d = 4

And erm.....Question one, u still can't figure out ah? Well, just find the first and the last term of the odd integer series la.. XD

Question one..

Since 2k and 4k is even num..

So the first and last term from 2k to 4k is 2k+3 and 4k-3..

a=2k+3
l=4k-3
so, d =6

number of term in d range 2k~4k
Tn=4k-3
(2k+3)+(n-1)(6)=4k-3
.
.}lazy..hehe
.
n=k/3

So, Sn=[(k/3)/2][4k-3+2k+3]
.
.
=k^2

Correct??

Actually no need to put put 2n as the last term..u misinterpret the question ard..coz it says the sum of the first n even terms of an arithmetic series..so no need to consider whether n is even or odd..

but still u get the same ans as mine..haha..[/b]

Finally!! U got it right.. haha.. That means question 3 u use a different method than me?

Anyway, just look at this question.. this one ought to be familiar with some stpm 2006 students.. haha..

The nth term of an AP is Tn. Show that Un= (5/2) [-2]^(2[(10-Tn)/17]) is the nth term of a G.P. If Tn= 1/2(17n-14), evaluate

[the sigma sign with infinity sign above and the n=1 below]Un.. Try imagining that sign as the forum can't draw it out.. lolx..

Btw, u cannot use Tn= 1/2(17n-14) in proving it (if I am not mistaken) so, try out this question ya..

Er..i dun understand the question..is the AP is also a GP.? or wad??? Any similarity between both series?? :?
the ques cacat la..haha..copy the whole ques plz..

here is a question for u guys..
a pingpong ball is falling from a height h above a horizontal rebounds to a height (e^2)(h) where e (0<e<1) is a constant. If the pingpong ball ball is released from a height H above surface, prove that the total distance travelled by the pingpong before coming to rest is (1+e^2)H/(1-e^2)..

I didn't copy wrongly. Seriously, I also don't understand the question.. Oh well, someone give me tips by asking me what's the characteristics of geometric progression(then, u can prove it).. never mind.. waiting for the teacher to discuss on it.. lol..

And, the nth term of the AP is not the same as the nth term of a GP la.. It just include the nth term of AP.. but u need to prove that Un is GP lor..

(try writing out on paper.. then u wil not get confused.. haha.. all the brackets are in the right order.. this paper is from STPM 2006 anyway.)

P.S: ur question is from which chapter of form 6 woh?

25-08-2007, 09:07 PM
But no matter how GP cant hav the same characteristic as AP..coz i've tried using some examples, GP definitely cant link to AP tanpa sebab..unless the first term of both series are the same. or d=r ..there must be some other similarity in the series..if not it cant be proved that there is -2 as the base..post the ans once u hav got the ans pls..

The ques i asked is the same chapt..u juz need to apply the convergent GP in it..it's abit physics-like..haha..

Happy Working Out~~hee..

Think I got it liao.. too curious..

Well, let me see..

Based on the diagram (which I have drawn),

I got this series..
2(e^2)(H), 2(e^4)(H), 2(e^6)(H)

The second term in this series is based on (e^2)[(e^2)(H)]

ok..

Thus, S infinity = a / (1-r) with
a = 2(e^2)(H) and r = e^2

S infinity = 2(e^2)(H)/ (1-(e^2))

Next, you add the H into the S infinity, as u r finding the total distance travelled..
S infinity + H

= [2(e^2)(H)/ (1-(e^2))] + H

= [2(e^2)(H) + (H- H (e^2))]/ (1-(e^2))

= (1+e^2)H/(1-e^2) [proven]

Is that how u prove ah? lolx..

U sure day dreamer won't be angry ah? haha.. he is already complaining oh.. anyway, here goes..

Un= (5/2) [-2]^(2[(10-Tn)/17])

U n-1 = (5/2) [-2]^(2[(10-Tn-1)/17])

Un / U n-1 = (5/2) [-2]^(2[(10-Tn)/17]) divide by (5/2) [-2]^(2[(10-Tn-1)/17])

= (-2)^(2[(10-Tn)/17]) - (-2)^(2[(10-Tn-1)/17])

= (-2)^(2/17) (10-Tn-10 + Tn-1)
= (-2)^(-2/17) (Tn + Tn-1)

= (-2)^(-2/17)(d) [independent of n)

The series has a common ratio. Therefore, its a GP ..

Understand now? And I guess u could do the last part of the question right? :)

That was slow.., Very slow.
My advice is don't depend on school teachers.
Tuition teacher is the only remedy and more importantly, ur own effort.
Last time my school bio teacher couldn't teach well, but it's important to finish the syllabus. For better understanding, u can opt for a good tuition teacher and double or even triple ur hard work.
There are many ways of studying STPM. Try to optimise ur brain. Not everything u learnt requires memorization. Many said that STPM necessitates a lot of memorise work. For me, it's not completely true. U need to know what topics are important and u MUZ study by heart.
Get urself a concept abt what u r studying, this makes learning more meaningful. After u've studied a topic, ask the same question and u shd be able to explain it.
Graphs and pictures are equally important because a picture tells a thousand words. There are alot of info u can obtain from them. Use them to study subjects like Chemistry effectively.
These are some of my experience when i was in form 6. Hope they are helpful and enjoy ur form 6 life!!

passion can drive you further.Make yourself interested in the subject you are taking and studying shouldn't be much of a burden.from my own experience, exercise is important to be successful in studies,if u do not understand the concept of a particular subject try to do the exercise and you will be surprise how easy it is.

it's good to hear u only have problems in maths and (of all subjects) PA2 haha..

for maths, make sure u have enough practice.. consult your teacher or friends on questions u can't solve.. good reference books are aso useful... i strongly recommend fajar bakti maths (it has a blue cover for maths T) :D

for PA2, maybe u have problems in the essay writing part... haha u needa read the question carefully to know wat isi u need to write

I have no problem in giving the relevant information, but determining the faktor,langkah..2+3 thingy

hehe..I'm kinda weak at subjects that requires rote learning,I have to be hardworking from now on..

PA/Maths r not subjects dat require rote learning, PA tests ur maturity to analyse an issue/info, while maths test ur understanding and application of the concepts.

r u trying 2 say u r very smart?
I'm kinda weak at subjects that requires rote learning,I have to be hardworking from now on.. :oops

I'm not sure of dat, but there's no doubt STPM is a test of hardwork/determination/right attitude. intelligence counts little.

I'm so doomed...

btw I found a cool website for physics..

http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/Hbase/hph.html#hph

it's have mind map for superficial understanding about subjects, there was link in the right for chem and bio too..

How are we going to host the question scans ?

jensern
15-02-2008, 10:10 PM
Simple.

Just upload the scans and post as images directly into the website...

OR

just pack the entire paper into an archive and host them on any of the available filesharing websites , such as rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared...etc

If i do so .. then we are only given a limit of 800Mb of space for uploading those past year question scans...

Any more sustainable suggestion ??

For those who have completed their STPM and does not have the financial means to go for further studies are not lost. You can work and study in the same time. We can place you in established Accounting firms where you will work in the weekdays and study for your Accounting degree in the weekend.

Those who are already working and wish to do a degree in other fields can also contact me.

Hmm, i'm not really sure which post of mine u referred 2, since the new "recom' is quite confusin 4 me at the moment. i tink it's best if u can focus in ur studies now, but havin some idea on where 2 apply after stpm is a force of motivation as well. hmm...wat courses r u planning 2 apply? the requirements 4 diff courses really differ alot. but some courses strictly want 4 flat only (at least dat's wat i noe), like chemical engine, medicine, law, dental, and pharmacy.

hi,

I was from SMK Kepong Baru (STPM 2006) & in NUS medics now.

Sorry, wat i mean Klang Area is Klang Valley.

Hi, you are an ex-kbian? Me too, just got my spm result. Which year is it when you were in your upper six? And do you mind if i ask for your full name? Perhaps, i know you.

In fact, i am very keen on studying medicine. Now i have applied jpa scholarship and am waiting for the outcome. i suppose i'll go back to kepong baru first. So, any advice from my senior? Are you on any scholarship to study medicine in NUS? Is it the well-known asean scholarship?

Anyway, if you are on scholarship, pls tell me more about your scholarship. Perhaps, i can apply that too.

Thanks in advance. Any one with information for medical scholarships for spm-leavers like me are absolutely welcomed to give their reply.

Hi...everyone....I'm new here...erm..I have been reading all the things bout form 6 at this site and it really helps me a lot..and I understand better...its just that...I'm sure I'm going form 6 but very frustrated about choosing stream...I'm not sure I like science or art cause I didn't take acc during form 5..and my SPM result is worse..I'm scare about going form 6..many ppl said form 6 is tough and need a lot of hardwork...i dunno whether i can cope with it...somebody can give me advice here...need help pls!!!TQ...

jayden
13-04-2008, 03:39 PM
HimoYoto, choosing which stream to go into would depend on your interest and what you actually plan to take up in university. What do you see yourself doing in a few years time? For example, if you don't see yourself being an accountant in the future then obviously, you can cut the accounts class out of your choice.

But if you're still quite undecided. obviously science stream would enable you to broaden your choices as you can still go back into an arts course next time. But if you decide on art stream, you can't pick any science course unless you go back into foundation.

Don't let anybody scare you about form 6. Yes, it is tough and the syllabus is wide. Yes, you will need a lot of hard work and sacrifice on your fun times a little. The thing here is you need to have interest in what you're studying which is why you have to choose the right stream to suit you. If you force yourself to study something just because of peer pressure or even your family, you will find yourself losing interest in your subjects and your results will be sliding downhill.

When people say hard work, it mostly means you have to pay attention in class, be sure to be updated in your work and go for tuition if you feel what you're studying at school isn't enough. Of course, being in a good school with experienced teachers will help too. But that doesn't mean you can't have fun, just that you shouldn't overdo it. You can still go online, lepak with friends or whatever. And last minute studying in STPM is a no-no unlike in SPM.

You can try to be more specific in your questions so we can try to help you better. Hope this helps :)

Hmm.. yeap. Form 6 is definitely hard.. but even if u opt for A levels, do you think A level would be easier? I don't think so especially if its cambridge a level.. Actually what make Form 6 hard is because you have to remember lots of things.. and when i say lots, its really a lot.. lol

anyway, its up to you in the end.. If want to save money, go Form 6.. if planning to go overseas to work, go A levels..

Fully agreed with lawteoh ...

Another thing is people tend to think that physic is hard if their SPM physic is poor ..

Actually that's not the case here..
The main factor that determine one's performance for STPM physic is their Maths in SPM ..

Haiz !! I will also end up studying F6 if I don't get JPA since BNM , Khazanah and Petronas disappointed me T.T . I really hope I don't end up like that though I know F6 is not equals to the end of my life . For those who're going F6 --> We must work hard to go through it no matter how hard is the syllabus !! The unity of recommers can overcome any obstacles !! =D

Getting an A2 in SPM BIO really changed my direction. Like JPA, before the SPM results were out I wanted Biotech, but realizing that I have just an A2 for BIO, i applied for engineering instead.

I am lazy to memorize the bio facts....when I look at it I wanna sleep d...and in form 6 bio we need to do surgery on rats, dead rats....and catch butterflies and duno do what...I find myself still very poor in explaining. That's what I am afraid of if I choose Bio stream.

hrm, I am from Penang. Jit Sin High.

I tot sillyboy is a BNM or JPA scholar?

so that means u get an A1 in physics then??I get B3 in physics while bio is B4...sucks right??haha....ya, me too...looking at the facts i feel sleepy...ha ha

Stpm 2008 revision tips for u!

Motivating yourself to revise is one of the toughest things you have to do at school. To make it worse, there is no immediate benefit: You have to sit there for hours on end, going through endless, illegible notes (most of which are probably incomplete) for an exam that is still some time away, and to get results that won't matter until months after you have sat the exam.

The fact is, though, that the STPM exam does matter. The results do matter. Revision does matter. Now, we don't want to scare you (as one of the best ways to revise is to relax). But at least if you really put your mind to the revision, and then don't do as well as you expected, at least you will know you have given it your best. Otherwise, you may regret it for the rest of your life!

Remember also that everyone is on your side. If you need help, ask a teacher, ask your friends or your parents. It is also good to go to all the revision classes at school, even if you think you know it already!

Is STPM as recognized as A levels?

jayden
19-04-2008, 08:26 PM
In a way, STPM is more recognized than A-levels. In Malaysia, it is recognized by both IPTA and IPTS while A-levels is only recognized by IPTS. STPM is also recognized in most other countries as well.

Halor everyone,

My SPM result : 9A4B
Stream : Sciences

I never been offered by any scholarship nor matrikulasi, but I did appeal. So, I think my next target will be Form 6. I'm a newbie to Form 6( Yeah, of course) Ok then, I need some information about Form 6 Physics Science class. Eg: what subject will be learnt, what's the meaning of CGPA 4.0 in STPM. Oh ya, I'm now preparing for Form 6, so do anyone have any website for STPM questions, just to prepare for myself

I have some queries about form6.

1. Mathematics T and S
1.1 What do the 'T' and 'S' stand for?
1.2 Is further maths called 'Mathematics F'?
1.3 Which maths do we need to take (i mean compulsory) in STPM?

2. Compulsory subjects for STPM
2.1 Are these - Pengajian Am, Bio/Phy, Chemistry and Maths - compulsory subjects?

3. CGPA
3.1 CGPA stands for?
3.2 CGPA is based on what? assignments?
3.3 Is it hard to get a CGPA of 4.0?
3.4 How to maintain a high CGPA?

4. MUET (Malaysian University Entrance Test)
4.1 Is MUET as tough as SAT English?
4.2 Is MUET comprise of two parts: theory and oral?
4.3 The MUET exam is before STPM?
4.4 What is the importance of MUET?
4.5 I heard MUET is no graded with 'A', 'B' or 'C' but band 1-6 instead. So the best band is band 1 or 6?
4.6 How does MUET affect our local uni applications?

Thanks heaps to those who help.:)

Got such thing?

1.1 T used to be TULEN. S is STATISTIK if I'm not mistaken. T concerns more about mathematical applications in science, e.g. vectors, velocity etc.
1.2 I don't know about this one :)
1.3 Any of the 2 but usually people in Science stream take Maths T (not sure if it's compulsory to take T instead of S)

2.1 If you're talking about Science stream, it's safe to say yes but you can take subjects like Economics or Literature as well.

3.1 Cumulative Grade Point Aggregate
3.2 In STPM, it's purely based on your STPM examination results (which includes Paper 4 - the laboratory Practical Assessments you did in school if you're not a private candidate)
3.3 Haha, intelligence and hardwork will make it easier.
3.4 Consistency, hardwork and in my case, tuition. It depends on your studying style basically :)

4.1 Nah. Try looking at an SAT book and a MUET book to compare. SAT is definitely much tougher in my opinion.
4.2 There are 4 papers if I could still remember well: Listening, Writing, Speaking, Reading
4.3 It depends. Usually, you get to do it 3 times before STPM (MUET's held twice a year) and as many times as you like after STPM.
4.4 It's important for applying to IPTS and if you're interested in studying in Singapore, MUET is of importance, especially if you're aiming for competitive courses like Medicine and Dentistry (which requires Band 6 to qualify for the interview)
4.5 Best Band is Band 6.
4.6 Not sure about this but nothing much?

Got such thing?

Being able to study in IPTA is a reward by itself as the tuition fees are heavily subsidised (like for UM Medicine it just costs about RM 10,000 for 5 years). Not sure about the JPA thing as I was only in UM for a week. LOL.

Analyse past year questions for Biology so that you'll know which chapters you should emphasise on but this doesn't mean that you can abandon the chapters that you think most likely will not be asked in the paper. For Biology, I spent my time reading one textbook partly because the book was given by my senior to me. It's the Longman book if I'm not mistaken. For interest and to clear up your thoughts, maybe you can try reading Biological Science or Google the information you want. Oh, and attempt past year papers :)

For Physics, I did a lot of past year questions, all the way from 1989 to 1999 as my tuition teacher has the papers. The papers were REALLY fun and challenging and it made sure that you grasp the concepts well + sharpen your thinking process. But it's unnecessary to do them as STPM standards have dwindled as year 2000 approaches. Anyway, for Physics, it's important to know how the equations come about, i.e. you must know how to derive from basic principles. I used the book A Levels Physics by Nelson & Parker + Fundamentals of Physics by Halliday & Resnick (you can buy a photocopied version/B&W version opposite Taylor's college I think. I got mine from my senior). There are many equations but you won't be actively memorising them once you start doing more and more questions and derive them along the way. To do well in Physics, most importantly you must enjoy Physics, understand the concepts and practise. Yup.

My daily schedule ha? For the month before STPM, I spent a day on one subject as that's my style (as compared to several subjects a day). For Biology, I spent one week reading just Biology (this week was the week before the non-MCQ paper). For Physics, I did all the past year papers whenever I feel tired after studying the same subject over and over again as Physics is a relaxing mental exercise because it felt like I was using a different part of my brain, leaving the tired part to rest.

Don't follow the study schedule/style of others blindly as they might not suit you even though they suit others. Find your own style that you're comfortable with :)

anyway, medicine in NUS is tough. much tougher than STPM. a lot of time and dedication is needed to do well, as proven by an STPM senior who has managed to get his name on the Dean's List (= Top 10) in NUS Medicine. Not as hard as last time but it's still hard considering the number of people who managed to get 5As out of the total number of candidates (e.g. 34 out of 73,690 in my cohort)

I was offered a scholarship by NTU but in the case of NUS, as I applied for Medicine, no scholarship was given to me. Fret not, many Malaysians I know in NUS who are studying other courses were offered the ASEAN Scholarship. Singapore does know how to drain Malaysia's brains away :)

Just to encourage you guys, my classmate who scored 5As in STPM was offered the ASEAN Scholarship. He is in the Dean's List for his course (*forgot which* Engineering) where he had to compete with people from India, China, Singapore, Malaysia, etc. This shows that the STPM system is working well even though the standards are different from that 2 decades ago.

EDIT: This doesn't mean that NUS doesn't offer scholarships to Malaysians in the case of Medicine. One Malaysian Medicine senior I know who studied in Singapore after SPM (she was offered the ASEAN Scholarship after SPM) was offered the ASEAN Scholarship to study Medicine as well. But in this case, she's an exceptionally brilliant individual. Dean's List, teamNUS member (which means that she's representing NUS in some sporting events), apparently a Malaysian national swimmer and a wushu exponent. Really brilliant.

If my memory serves me right (getting old here), NUS gives out nearly 1000 Asean scholarships to all nationalities. And the giving of scholarships to NUs also depends on your cohort, i.e. if your year was a bumper crop of As for STPM, they'll differentiante through MUET etc.

STPM is an open-list examinations; that means any combination of subjects may be taken. However, to be considered for Malaysian public university admission, students must take Pengajian Am (General Studies) and at least three other subjects. Most, if not all, schools and colleges offering STPM, however, do stream their students into science and arts (humanities).

A list of all subjects available for STPM students are:

Pengajian Am (General Studies)
Bahasa Melayu (Malay Language)
Bahasa Cina (Chinese Language)
Bahasa Tamil (Tamil Language)
Bahasa Arab (Arabic Language)
Literature in English
Kesusasteraan Melayu (Malay Literature)
Syariah (Islamic Law)
Usuluddin (Usuluddin)
Sejarah (History)
Geografi (Geography)
Ekonomi (Economics)
Pengajian Perniagaan (Business Studies)
Perakaunan (Accountancy)
Mathematics S (may not be taken with Mathematics T)
Mathematics T (may not be taken with Mathematics S)
Further Mathematics T (may only be taken with Mathematics T)
Computing (may only be taken at certain schools)
Physics
Chemistry
Biology
Sains Sukan (Sport Science)
Seni Visual (Visual Art)
For most non-science and sport science subjects, there are generally two papers per subject. For science subjects, there are three papers, with the third a practical paper[1] (though all but Computing offers a written paper as an alternative for private candidates).

Mathematics S and Mathematics T[2] share the first paper (consisting of Pure Mathematics), while with slightly different second papers, the prior with a more business mathematics approach while the latter a more science-related and statistical approach. Both subjects have both their papers graded separately on a different curve, though all questions shared between the subjects are marked with the same, secret marking scheme.

Grades and Grade Points
STPM uses a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) system. There are 11 grades, which are A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+ and D, with F as the failing grade. The grade points for each of these grades are between 4.0 and 1.0, A being 4.0 and D- being 1.0. The F grade gives a grade point of 0.

Grade Grade Points
A 4.00
A- 3.67
B+ 3.33
B 3.00
B- 2.67
C+ 2.33
C 2.00
C- 1.67
D+ 1.33
D 1.00
F 0.00

In order to pass a paper, candidate must at least score a C(2.00) or above. Having a grade between D to C- is a principal pass (lulus separa).

Each paper's grade appears on the result slip and the certificate. The subject's grade and grade point is determined by the weighted average results of all papers in that subject, where all papers must be passed, otherwise the grade and grade point would be, respectively, F and 0. The cumulative grade point average is the average of the top four subjects taken and usually rounded up to 2 decimal points. Therefore, if a student scores A in four subjects and fail in the fifth, his CGPA would be 4.0.

The actual range of scores within each grade is undisclosed and changes annually, depending on the performance of the candidates. Usually, the range of marks of science subjects is relatively higher than non-science subjects.

Cumulative and subject GPA at 2.0 and above is considered a pass with credit or principal pass. GPA below 2.0 is considered a sub-fail, and a 0 is considered a fail. Admissions to local public universities requires at least a GPA of 2.0 and above, though private universities, university colleges and colleges generally may accept student with CGPA less than 2.0.

The CGPA system in STPM poses some problems for admissions to American universities because the GPA range between 4.0 and 0 (unlike Advanced Placement range of 5.0 to 0) may understate the academic achievements of an applicant.

i will be in st. paul starting on 12may2008... what's his full name? as many chinese's surname is wong and the maha___??

anyway, i heard from many teachers saying the same thing too.. that stpm syllabus is wider than matrix...they do give out some real life example that some of my seniors from matrix cant cope with medic course in university compare to those from form 6...

however recently i meet a good friend of mine from matrix and she do admit that matrix syllabus is less...

this is some of the examples she gave:
for maths, she said that they study back the integration and differentiation in spm... more or less the same with form 5 without much deeper
for chemistry, they study less in organic part than form 6 do.... (for the exact difference sorry i forgot what she said as i dont understand the term:P)

under new format of MUET, besides the change of % weightage for reading and writing compenents, other changes include:

-the Writing part requires candidates to write 2 continuos essays(old format: 1 summary, 1 essay)
-the listening part are subjective questions, which requires candidates to write down important key words from the recordings, which is kinda same as listening part of IELTS test(old format:A,B,C,D objective questions)
