Fellow ReComers,
As we are moving forward, we really hope to hear from various ReCom members on how ReCom is doing and whether we are achieving our vision or target. What should be our direction from here?
Hope that everyone can share and discuss on this issue that is close and dear to our hearts.
a) To integrate and unify resources, skills and talents of Malaysia's youth.
b) To help propogate and help propel Malaysia towards Vision 2020.
c) To encourage originality, innovation, creativity and initiative.
d) To learn with and learn from others through healthy forum discussions.
e) To keep abreast of currect affair in Malaysia and around the world so we become educated and informed individuals through our opinions and suggestions in our column in the newspaper.
f) To create and encourage networking amongst peers and professionals in the working field.
g) To improve our command of the English Language.
h) To be able to contribute towards the development of our country.

d) To learn with and learn from others through healthy forum discussions.
Let me give my two-cents worth of opinio on forum discussions.
One, there are sometimes filled with personal attacks.
Two, digression from original topic.
Three, unnecessary posts. Forum is a place to discuss and present opinions but it should be noted that there are numerous posts such as "I agree", "I second that" or some redundant comments. At the very least, after the agreement, recom members should post their opinions on why they agree or add on to the idea or give some constructive comments.
Shall I add,
-) To remind Malaysian students in overseas to think about our country
I visit this site from time to time and I am always impressed by the dedicated members who are really working hard to achieve their great vision. and it reminds me that instead of chasing my own dream all the time, I need to think about my country.

while crafting for the Next: Recom Expansion Plan, I want to hear from everyone how can we:
1. improve ReCom, in general (website in particular, forum, SIG, etc)
2. How can we make something 'tangible' out of our discussions, etc.
3. how to achieve Recom's vision and plan something out.
4. This is particularly important: which webhosting do you RecomMend if Recom database need to move from it's current habitat.
5. how can we improve Remag.http://remag.recom.org
6. How can we meet up? (<-- drawn from my experience at Stanford Malaysia Forum, it would be really really interesting if we meet up...
we can even talk infinitely). Or, precisely, who want to meet other fellow Recomers?
One more thing..
I have the idea of introducing Recom to Kids & Teens. My idea is to give kids somewhere to hang out. It would be great if we can have something like PBS website:
http://pbskids.org/
(yes, Zoom is one of my favorite TV programs )
but before that, I want to hear from everyone.
Thanks

Well I agree (haha chiunlin. I'm doing it again!!) about the part where comments and discussions get redundant by people saying 'I agree' and stuff, but it isn't necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes, what you want to say has already been said by someone else, so what do you do? Why you agree with him/her of course! That and maybe add some of your own flavouring and seasoning to their comments.
About digression from the original topic, that's not really a bad thing either if you ask me. It is common for people to small talk even in real life conversations. The only problem with this small talk is when things get a bit...selfish. Y'know, like when people talk among themselves about things that only they know and happened to their circle of friends only. It sorta gives me the impression that they think this is their private forum or somethin.
Lastly, I would say it's a pleasure sharing opinions with everyone here. When I was first introduced to this forum by Ic3b3rg, I thought you were all just a bunch of snobbish 'know-all' actors who would probably boast about your overseas experiences and look down on F6 guys like me (it happens on some forums). Guess I couldn't have been more wrong. So I'd like to take the opportunity here to apologize to y'all too. The discussions here have really opened my mind and helped me imagine the conditions and feelings of students overseas, which is somethin like a consolation for local students like me! Okay, I'm digressing from the topic again...someone please slap me if I do so again ok?

I know we've probably had this discussion on Recom producing something more tangible. And I want to just take this opportunity to congratulate the Recom team for making Recom stand out more with the Remag effort and also the recent education thing.
I think that we should push more for people getting together and doing stuff. After all just talking about things won't make a difference. If we feel strongly enough about something, then lets work together to achieve it.
Keep up the good work guys.

I agree with littlebigone. we've had various suggestions about the 'tangible' thing since november last year. lots of thing have been done by fellow Recomers since then:
(hint : Remag, SIG, Creative Corner, etc...)
Special thanks to the Anchors and Remag Team. You guys are doing a wonderful job!.
BTW, Remag 2 is coming out soon. Stay Tuned.

Hopefully everyone can help to think on what direction ReCom should move on. What else should we have in ReCom~!
We want to hear from everyone. Any idea is better than no idea. No matter you have been an addict of ReCom for the past many months, or you just found ReCom 1 minute ago and you are already in love with ReCom, share your thoughts. We need everyone's feedback to improve ReCom~!
ReCom is as good as the summation of all its members~!

I think Recom is a microcosm of a government.. or maybe a country. There are many people with diverging interests, and ideas.
There are also different opinions on the purpose of Recom, the meaning of Recom to its members, and also the methods of posting messages in forums.
Just like running a country, the people who manage Recom need to assess the wants and demands of the members.... ( if you are running a democratic country ...that is) and make sure that everyone stays happy.... (tolerance, give and take... u get the idea) that is where diplomacy comes in place...
not everyone will get everything they want...
so, hehe...... good luck to Recom anchors...

My two cents. Sometimes, when we produce our opinions, it's good thing to know that there are others who share the same thoughts as you do. It's like a back up, you know, when you say something, then you find ppl like your stand... In another word, you might have successfully convinced others to share the same side of the argument of yours...

Thanks to Malaysiakini. Finally our press release from ReCom is published in http://www.malaysiakini.com/letters/200405050036824.php
Hopefully that this publication will help in one way or another, share some perspectives with fellow Malaysians, and possibly with the decisionmakers, to work in tandem to improve the education system in Malaysia.
I think that one other benefits, or should I say vision of ReCom, would be to enhance the inter-racial relationship among fellow Malaysians. Malaysians from all races are in ReCom, discuss and share their opinions freely, yet respectful of one another. This is a good start, as we, the younger generations, buiild on more contacts and networks with fellow Malaysians.

I'd say that's a great moment and a milestone for all recommers alike. Hopefully this is the first of many steps to creating even more awareness about our little community and what we're striving for.

I have just taken some look at how ReCom has developed in terms of members recruitments and how many members actually posted.
This may not be the best gauge of ReCom, but I think it could be an objective gauge for us.
We had 837 members at midnight January 1st 2004, so we have more than doubled that number as of today 7th of May with 1733 members.
During Jan 1st to 16th,
New members who started posting: 24 (average per day 1.5)
New members : 196 (average per day 12.25)
Hits: 58722 (average per day 3670)
ReCom was down from Jan 17th to Jan 31st. We changed webhosting company during this period. Everything during this period was lost. A tough time for ReCom. Luckily we prevail. Thanks fellow ReComers!!!
During 1st to 15th Feb,
New members who started posting: 26 (average per day: 1.73)
New members : 114 (average per day 7.6)
Hits: 54376 (average per day 3625)
p/s: Our down period has affected our recruitment and hits growth.
During 16th to 29th Feb,
New members who started posting: 18 (average per day: 1.29)
New members : 116 (average per day 8.29)
Hits: 45044 (average per day 3217)
During 1st to 15th March,
New members who started posting: 25 (average per day: 1.67)
New members : 109 (average per day 7.27)
Hits: 72262 (average per day 4817)
Hits increase as those ATU start asking questions on university placements. 50% increase in hits! During this time, number of new members actually drops.
During 16th to 31st March,
New members who started posting: 31 (average per day: 1.94)
New members : 144 (average per day 9.00)
Hits: 96734 (average per day 6046)
Another 25% increase. ATU universities D-day looming, SPM results out, scholarships questions increase.
During 1st to 8th April,
New members who started posting:14 (average per day: 1.75)
New members : 90 (average per day 11.25)
Hits: 48804 (average per day 6101)
Day wise, our hits per day increase during these 8 days. Questions flow in on Scholarships.
During 9th to 22nd April,
New members who started posting: 9 (average per day: 0.64)
New members : 36 (average per day 2.57)
Hits: 20220 (average per day 1444)
(ReCom was not stable during this period. The server was ups and downs. Thanks every ReCom members who support ReCom undyingly during this period)
During 23rd to 30th April,
New members who started posting: 12 (average per day: 1.50)
New members : 45 (average per day 5.63)
Hits: 32836 (average per day 4105)
ReCom is rebouncing. Thanks everyone~! Hurray~! Thanks Yusuf for the server!
During 1st to 6th May,
New members who started posting: 9 (average per day: 1.50)
New members : 44 (average per day 7.33)
Hits: 29418 (average per day 4903)
Hopefully everyone can see how ReCom progress. One thing that Jiin Joo has observed and it was proven is that we are growing linearly, rather than % wise. When we have 800 members, we are growing like 8 members a day, so an increase of 1% per day. Right now with 1700 members, we are still growing at that rate, so our growth is 0.5% per day. Anyway, I think ReCom is slowly, but definitely growing.
Hope that ReComers can share their insights derived from this data.

ReCom has possibilities. Plenty of smart people capable of critical thinking. You guys are the elite. I have no idea how the Malaysian education system didn't dilute your brain.
Here are my suggestions:
1. Turn ReCom into a online NGO. Never been done before. Let's be the first. We could register with the registrar of societies (which would limit our movement), and publish monthly newsletter/magazine for public consumption.
2. Issue regular member endorsed press releases pertaining to current issues of interest (e.g. education, human rights)
3. Set up a PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE, made up of Mass Comm students and anyone who has ties/interest with media.
Erm... yeah... hope that helps. Just my dua sen anyway.

Thanks The_observer for your suggestion.
At one point, we were seriously contemplating getting registered to be NGO, however, in the end, we decide to stay at current state, i.e. a place where Malaysians, students and even young professionals, hang around.
Currently we have ReMag, which is a magazine published once in two months. Hopefully those of you who have some articles to share can write an article for ReMag 3. Last date of submission of title is May 22nd. ReMag 3 will be released on 30th June.
Hopefully after the release of our first "Press Release" or "Letter to Media", whatever name it is, I think we have gotten the objective of spreading our idea out to the public. Getting published in The Star and Malaysiakini will help ReCom generate some interests and hopefully those issues that we share will help provide some direction for the betterment of Malaysia.
Yeah, definitely, we more than welcome anyone with ties with media. We have some mass comm students, however, we still need a lot more. We have some members who have written for university newspapers, magazines, however, we lack those with connections.
To all, hopefully you guys can share more opinions.

I think it's good to set up a group of media savvy people just to specialise in dealing with Public Relations. I'm sure my fellow Mass Comm/PR stu's will agree.
