Getting started on Knoppix

Knoppix is roughly a distribution of linux that allows other operating system users (particularly windows) to try and familiarize with the linux environment without the hassle of creating a new partition or the risk of affecting the original OS

Ok, after the introduction, here's the main point. I need help. I just booted knoppix but I couldn't seem to connect to the internet.

The steps I did.
1. Configured adsl/pppoe answering every prompt with yes
2. Configured the network card again answering every prompt with yes. (I chose eth0 over ppp0)
3. Initiated NX connection. Putting streamyx as the host. Leaving the port number by default 22 and my broadband account username and passport. Which unfortunately results in such an error.

NX> 203 NXSSH running with pid:4465
NX> 285 Enabling check on switch command
NX> 285 Enabling skip of SSH config files
Nxssh: streamyx: Temporary failure in name resolution

Going through forums at the same time, but yet to come across a post with a streamyx case. Thanks

Since TmNet Streamyx uses the PPPoE connections, you can try the following instructions:

To configure broadband to your college network, you will need to get some details from either your college network admin and/or your fellow students that already have it figured out.

That said, once you get the details, you can configure Knoppix as follows:
Click on K Menu>KNOPPIX>Network/Internet and from there maybe Network card.

If your college assigned a username and password to use when you connect to your broadband Internet connection, then you must set up PPPoE before you can connect to the Internet. Click K Menu>KNOPPIX>Network/Internet>ADSL/PPPOE configuration. It will attempt to detect PPPoE use on your network, and then enter you username and password to connect to your college Intranet (i.e. your ISP).

Once you finish the configuration application, you will be connected to the Internet.

Wireless is another matter - start another thread on that when you are able to solve this problem first.

Apparently, the book "Knoppix Hacks" cannot be searched at Amazon for the relevant chapter, but will be available in a new edition Nov 15, 2007 for $23.09 which you can preorder now, or the previous edition is available for $19.77 which also has some details on what you need to know.

I'm now posting this from knoppix.

I redo the steps few times until I ended up with eth0, ppp0 and ppp1. Then I suspected that it might be the different sets of ppp0e configurations that caused the conflict. So, I rebooted the OS and tried the steps again, bingo! Didn't have to use the NX connection at all.

Next, I am considering an installation to my HD. Meddling is fun... ;-p
There're just so much more to learn.
