View Full Version : ReCom's SourceForge.

Hello all,
I have this idea of creating the ReCom's version of SourceForge.
The goal of the project is to promote the development of Open Source among Malaysians, and help each other to enhance our knowledge in computer programming. It could also help us to understand how to work to develop software in the group (CVS, etc).
we can also learn how to coordinate the development of software. In essence, we want to put our knowledge into the real world.
It would also be useful in your computer job in the future.
If anyone interested in becoming the Head of the Recom's SourceForge (or maybe RecomForge) project, please email us at
support@<hidden> or directly to me :
masterof_none@<hidden>
or contact any of Recom's Software Wizard (http://recom.homelinux.org:8000/~recom/modules.php?name=About&filename=anchors)
or if anyone have any idea and suggestion about this, just shout it here. we can brainstorm first.
Thanks
weich

sounds good.....wouldn't mind helping out =)
...maybe we should start small first? e.g. developing components/modules for the Mambo CMS System...the one I'm using on my website currently and then once our members gain a specific amount of expertise we can start branching out?
...and then also have a tutorial section for newbies like me haha....very interested in web programming but doing another degree like me =)
What do you think?

Thanks for your interest weich.
Yep, I agree with the idea of start small first.
But I think we can decide which apps we want to build.
Or I think, those who aready develop some killer apps for their assignments and wouldn't mind developing further, can share with other Recommers.
Since all of us are not really expert, a not-so-good written code is to be expected. So, don't be ashamed of sharing your code with others!.
(but of course, we want to develop it to be a good program).
I think simple apps, like weich suggested, will do.
And, I remember a guy suggested (I think littlebigone) that we can do a competition among us (like topcoders.com).
The best programmers would receive prestige from Recommers.
I hope we can hear more about this idea .
my summer break will begin the week after next so you can count me in :) :) :) ...

maybe include a shop module with virtual money gained from no. of posts like IBStore on Invision Boards? I have it in my forum: www.internshipasia.sferahost.com/forum and my currency's 'guli', 1 post you get 5 'guli(s)', then once you have like 100 gulis you can change your name effect, etc.... it would be fun...haha....also encourages ppl to post in a way =)

that would also mean constantly developing things that people can "buy" rite?
How will RecomForge work? Will we get the source code and everybody can make improvements and documentation or will it be more like just downloading programs?

I think if the things is good, and people don't mind using the program..I think the author can charge..

What I have in mind is both. We create a simple program that could evolves, and then document it and improve it.. and at the same time, we have the stable version that everyone can download.

i think you can develop anything you want...it can be for fun...like an online game or for profits like commodity price tracker, etc....if you goto mamboportal, they have a section where companies post what they want, and the developers will try to make it...and if it's good, they'll get paid =)
It's just a start to let our abundant IT grads pick up programming for fun, and soon, once the culture gets embedded, who knows...Malaysia might have the largest no. of independent programmers in the world working on open-source projects....and when it's free more ppl will use it rite?
a month passed already .. so are we still on? since we already became one SIG maybe we could organize this thing better ..

ok...I've just edited a component for the Mambo CMS to display the stock indices of the FTSE 100, FTSE Techmark and the Dow Jones , originally made by somebody else. I get the values from Yahoo Finance =)
You can see it here! (http://www.internshipasia.y-host.com/mambo1)
doesn't really count since I only changed some variables in somebody else's work...but I'm a newbie to this =)
Anyway, any of you interested in trying out the Mambo CMS can PM me. =)
weich, I respect your enthuasism about Mambo CMS .. but the problem is it is not popular .. if you really want someone to venture into developing modules for that CMS, why don't you promote it here .. like tell us how is it different from other PHP-based CMS such as PHPNuke, PostNuke etc etc .. you can't be like a medicine brewer who just approaches people and ask them to sell his medicines without giving any explanation .. heck no one would want to sell those medicines .. the same goes to software or whatsoever .. a developer has to experience a software before he can create addons for that software, doesn't he? if someone was invited to create a plugin for a software X, whereas he had never used that software before, how would one expect he would be interested to create the plugin?

ok just giving an example...
but for those interested, try going to www.opensourcecms.com to try out all the different CMS available and you can see which is better suited to you =)

to start off, how about downloading some open source software from sourceforge, and learn how they develop. (how they maintain the CVS system, the release ,etc). after we have sufficient knowledge of how things go, then we can develop our own, homemade software.

the site is pretty simple (enough to create a personal homepage)
or blogging.
Current features:-
- add news together with an image (auto resize image if it's too big)
- add announcement with a file attachment
- add block on the right panel
- can be integrated with photo gallery
- admin panel (to control overall text/stuff on the website)
- minor features (feedback)
under the hood:-
- forum
- better implementation of coding
- theme support
whoaaa! our bachok is up to challenge already! my proud student :P ...
I already have my own php system for homepage -> phpLuke .. *psst* my homepage my homepage *psst* :) ... though its overall admin system is still too naive but each component (aka module) is pretty self-contained :) ..
and I think bachok is already working on MSD LA website using his own php system :) (hehe bocor rahsia hang) ...

i am a first year software engineering student..
although, it may sound good my collage only offer JAVA (weird, most Uni i heard offer C Language). And i also fasinated with php language.. and currently learning/testing scripts on sourceforge
Before making any weird scripts, we should start with something easy.. maybe an add-on for an existing script..
