Not sure about that as I have not tried VMWare before. But, it is good enough for me because I just use Ubuntu to process my NMR data occasionally and it becomes handy to be able to boot Ubuntu inside Windows.

well, VMware is also a virtualization software that works probably everywhere. And i'll bet that there are a lot more vmware virtual machines lying around in the net than with the relatively little known sun virtualbox.

I think i am going to add another software to my own list:

7. MyPhoneExplorer 1.7- This third party phone manager software for Sony Ericsson software had won my heart earlier with flawless support for my old phones K750i(stolen) and later k800i(still in operation). I was disappointed because it didn't support symbian UIQ3 based phones like my W960i. Now that the new release supports it, it's going to displace Sony Phone Manager yet again.

2. DC++ (we have LAN file sharing - download a 1.0-GB movie in 10 minutes!)

4. Nero 7 Ultra Edition (uses a lot of memory, but I've been dependent on it for my assignments!)

Henry, you might want to try CDBurnerXP pro to burn your cds. It's a lot lighter than Nero as far as i know. Have no major problems with it until now. Do note that you need to have .Net Framework >2.0 installed.

OK, thanks, I'll check that out. Anything for something less memory-eating. Every time I use Nero I need to shut down other programs or else my screen will just freeze!

1. K Lite Codec Pack + Real Alternative + Quicktime Lite (solves all my multimedia codec woes)
2. KMPlayer (excellent, very configurable player, i highly recommend this player)
3. Mozilla Firefox (excellent web browser when used with a set of useful add ons)
4. CCleaner (computer needs house keeping once in a while)
5. Xun Lei (aka Thunder) (a BT/Emule client which enables me to achieve high speed when downloading)

Hmmm... guess I'll try out Foxit Reader, too. Anything to save disk space, and hopefully memory! Maybe someone could put up a thread telling us what are the alternatives to some programs that can load faster and use less memory. For example, CDBurnerXP is indeed a better alternative to Nero in terms of memory usage; Google Chrome has a much shorter startup time compared to Firefox, etc.

Just because these programs are not developed by some big names like Adobe and Nero doesn't mean that they are inferior in performance, right?

I have read reviews saying that there is a virus and spyware with the sidebar. There are also good reviews and very bad reviews. Most people say that it eats up a lot of memory, so programs run slower, but some actually say it makes programs run faster! O_O

I'd love to change my Windows XP look into a Vista look, but reluctantly at the expense of memory and all these security issues.

So, please tell me, how do you personally find Vista Mizer 2.5, truthfully?

I wouldn't recommend using any of the vista overhaul kind of software. They will replace system files and had in many cases made the pc really unstable...

For image editing, if your needs aren't out of Earth you may try Paint.net. It supports layers as well, and is in many normal cases as powerful as photoshop, minus the cost...

Well, out of the earth refers to more semi-professional usages like cmyk colour profile, RAW files editing, extremely high resolutions files. If you are not doing any of those Paint.net is likely to fit your needs well... Maybe a trial is to be called :) It's very light on resources as well

RAW file is not precisely out of the earth. If you are serious about photography, you should consider editing RAW files from your camera (most commonly available in digital SLR). But as far as I know, there are freewares that support RAW files. The software that comes with your digital SLR should provide RAW edit feature too.

Well, due to space constraints with my digital camera I usually don't take pictures in RAW format, unless of course, I bring along my laptop along with me when I travel :P

But you are right, taking in RAW isn't as out of the world as I have made it out to be, there are plug-ins for Paint.net that supports RAW format as well...

Then I came across Auslogics Disk Defrag. It's freeware, and it really picks up every fragmented file and defrag it. So far, it has left only at most 5 of the thousands of fragmented files unprocessed, due to very low disk space. But one thing I am certain, it really sped up the processing speed of my computer. Startup time (including the loading of all the programs at the taskbar) was halved, and opening up files took much shorter time.

This defragmenting utility is indeed helpful and efficient. Besides, it doesn't take so long to defrag.

If your hard drive is such that even defragmenting tool can't defrag everything, you will need to free up some space. Remember that low disk spaces can also cause windows to crash badly...

Well, I have about 15GB of free space. But 4 or 5 VERY VERY LARGE files still couldn't defrag. So I freed it up (by transferring files to my external hard disk) and got till 25GB of free space. And it was better.

Anyway, my point was that while Auslogics could defrag and really increased processing speed, the Windows Defragmenting Tool couldn't do a good job at all! Auslogics leave about 4 or 5 files unprocessed, but Windows Disk Defragmenter would leave me a LIST of files that it couldn't defrag!

The main reason is that Firefox doesn't crash so much like internet explorer...even if it does, it will save the page you last visited so that you can open it later when u run firefox...but for the very lame ie, it tends to crash often and when it does, it shuts all ie windows and u lose everthing that you're working...i've used version 6 and 7 though ie7 is good i still prefer firefox

There are lots of features that firefox offer like spelling checking, bookmarks, tab browsing and lots more...i'm not sure if ie7 does that cause i seldom use it but to me firefox is always the best...opera, safari and chrome are some other examples of famous internet browser...

it is very much faster than ie...mozilla seldom crashes unless you open huge apps that require flash then it might stop working...but you can recover it when you next open firefox...
