Hi. Do you think a work placement is very important in gaining a foothold in industry nowadays. Do you think the reputation of the university is more important than the work placement when it comes to applying for jobs?

I think that the most important thing is the skills that you have. University reputation can only help up to a certain extent and work placement too can only help up to a certain extent. If you don't have the skill sets, you won't survive in the rat race.

Do you think that taking a degree in order to obtain a skill set without a placement is better than taking another degree in order to obtain a lesser skill set but with a placement?

It depends on how you look at it. We can obtain various skills, especially soft skills in many ways. Learning on the job, through job placement is a good way to learn it, although it is not a necessity.

I would say that if you could incorporate a job experience, especially during the breaks, that will do you a world of goods. Eventually, it boils down to what you hope to achieve from your education.

do u have any pay during work placements? by the way, i think work placement is a good way to practice and apply wat u have learnt... i think this is very important. no point knowing all the facts and how things work just by theory if we dont know how to apply it to our daily life...

ya try to get a work placement
/co-op or at least a summer internship if you have the chances. It is good for you to apply the stuff you learn into good use, while learning extra skills to survive in the job market.Plus it will really "beautify" your CV. One of my Malaysian friends here just gets JP Morgan. Although the working hour is from 8am-8pm, she can learn tones of stuffs. I will definitely try to get an internship like this during my sophomore year.
