I know nothing about this, but i did a google search. This was the first link

Lotus Notes Maintenance
Steps users can take to limit the size of their mail files and Notes files:
? Regularly delete any obsolete messages. Use the "All Documents" view to do this.
? Detach any files to the hard drive and remove them from the e-mail message.
? Compact the Lotus Notes workspace. Compacting frees up unused space reducing the size of the *Desktop.dsk and **Cache.dsk files stored in the Notes\Data directory located on the M: drive. To perform the "Compact" on the workspace, place your cursor on the workspace (not on a database icon) and click the right mouse button. The "Workspace Properties" box will appear. Click on the "i" tab. Click compact.

* The Desktop.dsk file is the Notes Workspace image (contains the database icons and workspace pages).

** The Cache.dsk contains design elements of Notes forms. Each time a user opens a new database containing a new form, this form is saved in the cache.dsk.
