Hello.
Anyone here has ever been for an AFS interview or have been selected to go for a student exchange program?
How is the interview like?
Can anyone tell me more about the YES Program yo USA?

Hi Navee,
I've never been on the AFS program, but I do have friends who have been on it/ are on it right now. PM me if you want their contact details.
From what I know about the YES program, they have about 33 places to give. There're 2 interview sessions - the 2nd being a 2 day camp. From the 1st interview (where almost everyone who applies for AFS gets through to), I think, though I'm not completely sure, that they want you to go in school uniform.
For the 2nd interview (for the YES program), they shortlist about 50 people from the 1st interview to the 2nd round. Then, they select about 33 people to go for the program. :)
Hope that helped!

I did go for a student programme once to Japan. It's a 3 weeks exchange and I got the chance to experience christmas and New Year celebration there. I learnt a lot of things and it's a wonderful experience. I went there under Lion's Youth Exchange Programme. You have a higher chance of receiving the offer if you try to host one in return. =)
Best of luck for those who went for AFS!

Hey guys,
Anybody out there who managed to get the YES scholarship and get shortlisted for the JPA interview? If yes, how do you get about since it clashes. Did/do the JPA people help you work something out or you're left to make a HARD decision between the two?
Thanks in advance.

Hi!
The question I got which killed my chances (or at least I think it did...) is related to what you are wondering right now...
It was " what if you were halfway through the programme (it last 6 months) and then you are offered a scholarship. Would you quit halfway to accept it? Because if you do, you would have robbed another person's chance of experiencing it because you wasted the opportunity"
Well, naturally I couldn't give a convincing answer...
All in all, I'm glad I didn't get it after all.

Thanks nickvl, I'm sure that you would have gained so much whether you got it or not. We just have to look at it at different angles I guess. :)
Does that mean there's no chance of students applying for JPA and the YES scholarship? Are there any cases whereby the JPA people give any exceptions i.e. interview through the phone or inerview at the Malaysian embassy etc? I know it sounds kinda far-fetched la. :D

Yep. This year (2009) at least two JPA interviews were held at the Embassy in DC for YES kids.

Wow! That's really cool....but what happens if you're placed in far flung places (which they do) and nowhere near DC?

I have actually once considered applying for the programme but decided to pass instead since I needed to focus on my study but my friend went for the interview (but she went for Japan).
Basically, they'll interview you on your knowledge about Malaysian culture. eg; why do the indians celebrate Deepavali and all that? (so when you go abroad, you know what to answer if should you be encountered by a question such as stated)
It's not that tough if you are updated about the happenings on Malaysia. Be advised : You will be asked random questions like, who's the current education minister? trivial stuff such as that.
Good Luck :]

Did you get the program truecolours?
Cuz I got it as well...
Hey!
I'm one of the YES '09 returnees who went to US.
and I did go for the JPA interview in DC, and I got the scholarship =)
first of all, I'd definitely encourage anyone who's having second thoughts on going on this programme, cause trust me, it's AWESOME!
I have no regrets. As a matter of fact, I wish I could have extended my stay there.
well anyway, there were 10 of us on the programme who went for the interview, and they had 2 sessions; one in the morning, and another in the afternoon.
if I'm not mistaken, I think 4 of us got the scholarship
I know you're worried about being too far away, but we managed it, so I don't think that should be a problem..
I had a friend who came from Arkansas, and it wasn't easy for her either..
BUT, please do take a note, that AFS will not bare the costs
we paid for the flight tickets, as well as accomodation and other expenses on our own.
and just one more thing, on my personal account, the JPA-interview-trip to DC was among the best experiences I had during the programme, and it made me so much more responsible, independant and confident. =)
