Hey recomers, just doing a little survey. This is directed to those US Bound JPA 2009 scholars.
I'm just wondering where JPA is sending the US Bound scholars to? From what I've heard, it's mainly UNITEN for engineering, INTI for science, and some in INTEC. Are there anyone who is bound for US but not doing their prep-courses in these 3 places?
I also found it quite weird that this year JPA is apparently only sponsoring for 3 years in US, instead of the normal 4 years for an undergraduate degree in US. Instead, they've also extended the prep-courses from 1 year to 2 years. This would be logical for INTI as they have an Credit Transfer Program in place. But for UNITEN, i've done a little research and found that their course is just 2 semesters (1 year) and they have no Credit Transfer in place. Did JPA mention what sort of prep course it would be?
So my question is, did anyone get a 1 + 4 sponsorship, instead of a 2 + 3 sponsorship? Also, did JPA mention what type of foundation you'd be doing? From what I understand, ADTP would be 2 years, but the norm for INTEC and UNITEN should be a ADFP, which is only 1 year.
Another thing is, from what I've heard from last year's batch, it's apparently written on the contract that they have to get into ivy league/ivy league standard unis for JPA to sponsor them. If not, the scholarship would be converted to 3 years in US only (ivy league unis after all don't accept transfer of credits for our ADTP programs) My question is, did anyone have such a clause in their contracts? (From what I've asked around, the question is no. It's just stated that they should get into a uni in US)
If it's 2 + 3 only, then the question is, would JPA sponsor US bound students to ivy league/ivy league standard unis, as these unis usually don't accept credit transfer and take 4 years to complete an undergraduate degree.
I hope that those US bound JPA 2009 scholars could perhaps help answer some of the above questions. Thank you.

JPA also sent a small batch of students to Taylor's ADP for social science programs. That's valid for last year's batch though. Not sure about this year's.

The letter that I got last year mentioned that it was a 1+4, meaning one year in Malaysia and the remaining four in the US. But, JPA did not mention anything about Ivy League/Ivy League Standard in my letter. In my case, I was given a choice to do either a 1+4 (provided that I'm accepted into any Ivies/Ivy Standard school after doing 1 year of ADP and thus, I'll begin schooling as a first year student in the US) or a 2+3 (meaning I have to do two years of ADP locally before heading to th States as a transfer student for my third year studies)
ADP/ADTP/ACTP itself is already a degree program - there's no pre-u or any other prep course.

I think I just answered that...

Actually, these schools do accept transfer students, except for Princeton and Harvard (Harvard mentioned specifically so for the academic years of 2008-09 and 2009-10 only). Although I must say that the chances are pretty slim...
I hope that clears some of your doubts.

i believe there are some actuarial science students going to taylors university college as well.

actually, i would say that the mentioned program is similar to what jpa has been implementing for the past few years. basically, if you meet certain requirements set by jpa in your first year, including getting a place in a list of universities that jpa will provide, then you can fly after a year and spend 4 years as an undergraduate in the US.
of course, not many people manage to do that, so then there is the other half of the program that requires you to do another year in malaysia and then complete the rest of your degree in the US.
on the types of programs that you will be doing in malaysia, i would have to say that it varies from place to place. In intec, i think the first semester is just more to english and mathematics, as a preparation for the SAT. in INTI, you start your degree by taking certain courses and go for certain preparatory classes for the SAT and TOEFL at the same time. i am not too sure about UNITEN, though.
i think it is best for you to wait for the briefing on the first day that you arrive at your respective institutions. looking at the fact that there are a lot of changes to the entire jpa system this year, there may be even changes in the US program... all the best.

Thanks for starting this thread.
Maybe those who got JPA Scholarships to US can post here on which preparatory program you would be doing and which field of studies that you would be doing.
If you have any question, do feel free to ask too.
For those who got into US program, would definitely hope that you guys would work hard from now onwards. It is June already, so time is tight.
A glimpse at the time line:-
SAT Reasoning Test - October 2009 (you can do subject test instead too)
SAT Subject Test - November 2009 (you can do reasoning test instead too)
SAT Reasoning Test or Subject Test reseat - December 2009 & January 2010
TOEFL - By December 2009
If you plan to apply as Early Decision, then the latest SAT Subject/Reasoning test would be November 2009. For TOEFL, would be October 2009.
Applications deadline would be 2nd January 2010.
Time is not on your side, so if you do get US program, do start working hard today. Have put about 30+ resources over at here (http://usapps2009.blogspot.com).
Feel free to keep the questions going.
Haven't heard from many who get US Program.
Whether you get in or not into top US universities, it really depends on you. So, start work now. Do go through those documents prepared and you should have a better idea!
Every year, we see some students who start working hard early, would end up being rewarded with prestigious admission into their dream university.
Below is the list of some Malaysians who make it this year. Read here (http://chenchow.blogspot.com/2009/04/admits-from-malaysia.html)
Hopefully that your name would appear there next year!

Basically, for JPA program to US, it would be over 2 options, irrespective of you doing it at INTEC, Inti, Taylor's, UNITEN etc.
1. If you can get into Top universities in US (the list provided by JPA: All Ivy League + about another 10 more universities), you would spend 1 year foundation in Malaysia and spend 4 years in US.
2. If you are not able to get into Top universities in US or you choose not to try, you will be spending 2 years foundation/preparation in Malaysia and then spend 3 years in US.
So, on whether you can get to spend 4 years in US, it depends on you. On whether which university you would study, again, it depends on you.
Would really hope that you can start preparation now. It is June already. I know I have been saying this a few times. Do start read through the resources available. You can get it here (http://usapps2009.blogspot.com).
If you find any other useful resources, do let me know. Would put it there for benefits of other students.
Good Luck!
p/s: Remember, don't wait till your preparatory program starts. It would be late already.

you mean the SAT? well, the link to the resources that chenchow has given also has tips about the test. other than that, you can find loads of books on SAT from bookstores like kinokuniya, mph and borders.
