Greetings. :)

Honestly, I would not recommend studying for IELTS in the manner you are planning to. Substituting a common word for a lesser-known word may seem like the obvious thing to do if you want to make your essay seem 'exquisite' but I assure you, examiners can easily see through that veil. There is no point in using bombastic words if your sentence structure or grammar is off. If anything, doing so will make it worse as it is an indication of rote-learning. When in doubt, drop the lofty words and stick to simple, clear and understandable English.

As always, I will give you the best piece of advice when it comes to English; READ. Seriously, remember when your school teachers nagged your head off about making reading a habit? Well, they're right. The absolute best (and least boring) way to improve one's language is to read widely. Newspapers, novels, blogs, articles, essays, magazines, journals, anything at all.. Just read.

Reading helps in many ways other than building up a solid vocabulary bank and conjuring ideas; reading also gives you the ability to process information efficiently and effectively. This is especially crucial in one of the IELTS sections where you're required to gobble massive walls of words and answer questions in a short period of time. Constant reading gives you that extra gear when you need to rapidly scan through volumes of text, as is the case in IELTS and various other high-level academic tests.

I hope that helped. Feel free to ask anything else about IELTS and I shall try to answer as best as I can.

Hi guys, I scored an overall band of 8.5 in my IELTS test and I would like to share some tips on how to score in IELTS.

I obtained band 9 for both my Listening and Reading components. For both of these components, practice is the key. i would suggest practising sample questions in the Cambridge IELTS series and familiarising yourself with the format of the question papers. Be careful with the True/False/Not given sections of the Reading component. 'Not given' just means it isn't mentioned in the passage at all, for instance the passage is about life in Australia and all of a sudden the question asks about life in New Zealand. For the Listening component, ensure that you jot down notes (this can help a lot in the multiple choice questions, where you pick something like 3 out of 6 or more options).

As for the Speaking component, practise speaking with your lecturer and friends who are good in English so that they can guide you and highlight your weaknesses. Also remember to speak confidently and fluently during the test. Calm yourself down before the test (come early so that you have time to chill) so that you can perform your best during the Speaking interview.

The Writing component requires speed, so practise writing tests and time yourself. Ensure that you do not spend too long on your 1st task, and remember to elaborate well on your points in your second task. It's mainly a race against time to produce the best essay you can write, minimising grammatical errors and maximising good expressions and elaborations of points.

K, that's all from me, hope that readers will gain something from this post! All the best in IELTS to those of you who haven't taken it yet! :)
