An idea struck through my brain, just after an exam just now, thinking that since ReCom has many students who have done very well in SPM, why not, we come out with some idea to provide some free tutoring for SPM students online.

So, I am calling out for opinions on how we could do this.

My personal opinion, will be to have a section called SPM Tutorials. Something like our Special Interest Groups, where we have numerous threads for this purpose. Among the threads could be:-
1. Q & A on Study Tips
2. Success Story of past SPM students.
3. Threads for each subject (Based on demand)

Any other suggestion?

Hopefully we can pull this off.

And once we have that, and we have members all over the country, we can spread the words around very fast to our friends, juniors in Form 4, Form 5, to seek help here.

Any comment?

I totally agree!

And number 4 could be - Motivation To Study. What to do when one feels lazy, lethargic, unmotivated and sick of all the insignificantfacts that mean nothing in real life.

Hope that more idea could come in.

Deaf-knee, you could help us survey what is the need of F4, F5 students and hence we can cater specifically to it. Hope to hear more idea on it!

do u think the secondary school students are interested in ReCom?

there?s a verry good online study guidance site : www.netcousins.com

you can refer to how stuffs works in it..

i was once a netcousin.

From what I understand, net cousins are not free right?

And I think the market is large enough for us to share information and help. There are more than 400,000 SPM students and I think what we hope to do here, is to share what we know, help others getting good grades etc...

Needs of F4 and F5 students?

Probably advice on how to manage time. (Yeah they all say we should set our priorities straight blablabla, but does anyone really read topics beforehand and revise afterwards every single studying day, repeat process etc?)

Oh yeah I was also wondering whether it's a good idea to take extra subjects (hey npang took 16 and got UK MEDICINE KYUEM that pretty much proves that taking extra subjects and studying like mad certainly is good, doesn't it?). Though it IS of course too late of me to want to take extra subjects, but still. :)

And maybe advice on better reference books to use, better magazines to read to improve BM skills (so ter-over-ly vital in M'sia), etc etc?

study tips on HISTORY worst subject in the world
[bullet] what about physics?
[bullet] and Biology. omg..biology.

Then again these ideas come from me only, you gotta ask the rest what they think. For all I know all the other students have got everything figured out and I'm the only one left not studying though it's already [b]MID JUNE.

it?s not free but it?s charged low price..

I suggest before we do this we must let SPM students like ReCom.. just like what netcousins have done..

if they don?t even want to visit ReCom, they wot come here right?

I think we should understand by now that many SPM students are looking for the "best" tuition center... though by the "best" and most qualified teachers.. this is another factor to be considered...

the advantage we have is there are top scholars in ReCom.. a good reputation.

My personal opinion on this is to reach out. If we can help 10 students, that's fine. It is positive number. 20 students, that's fine too. 50, 100, the more the merrier.

And I believe we all do this with our sincerest mind. Any suggestion from others?

I would look at this as an extra guidance. They could go to other tuition centers, or anything, but this is another source of help.

I think the cost of $199 for 3 months are kind of steep too. Anyway, I think what we hope to do would be as an added alternative. We are just trying to help.

Any other opinion, especially those who have just taken SPM?

here?s something to ponder on:

are we helping them to understand thier studies or helping them to score.... ?

both of these things are completely different.. for eg if u want to help them score well u must know the current syllibus .. and u might have to provide some notes, rumusan and formular list etc.

but if u want them to understand certain topic it would be easier...
just terangkan something like that...

I think it would be easier if we have a real time interaction with our pelajar... (chat room)

but I disagree to do such tuition on forum board..

One thing I'd like to know is - will this tuition thingy be on a Q&A basis, as in 'you ask, and I answer', or will there be like fixed 'tuition' times (twice a week for example)?

chenchow
11-06-2004, 08:53 PM
I don't think we can do fixed tuition time. It is more of a Q&A.

Basically nothing is fixed here, except that the idea is to try and help those F4,F5 students in preparing SPM.

So, basically hope to hear more opinions, on how we can best do it, what would be of the best mechanism to help.

After ponder for a while I have think of a good idea..

I suggest that we have an affiliation / Coorperation with netcousins. I believe that i will be a win win solution...

I shall write the detail of my suggestion later in another thread.

Hope to hear your suggestions. Thanks.

To others, please suggest. We want to hear from you.

In my opinion, i think Recom needs those academical materials and tools such as mathematical signs and symbols, and stuffs.... it's a little unneat to write 3X^2 .... hmm... just my two cents

And how do you think you can promote this among the numerous upper secondary schoolers? A lot of us are too far away to do much.

And if you do, how to pull them off things such as Ragnarok Online, Gunbound and the whole lot?

Important SPM tip: DISCIPLINE.
---> It would also be important later in life as well ! :)

i think if those students are really interested in studying, i bet they will use their time online usefully, which also means, learn through RECOM as well... You can't keep the internet away from students these days... it's the source of information... the self-control? it's up to them to deal with it.

I think that we can first provide some form of motivation to SPM students. Tell them how much it means doing well in SPM. As I have observed, many of them tend to have the lacklustre attitude of merely obtaining a couple of credits and pass their BM in the SPM, hence the lack of inspiration to excel. Many of them do not realise the existence of various scholarships for SPM graduates, and the value of these. Perhaps scholarship applicants can share a few stories on the difficulty of obtaining such scholarships, and the consequences (I do not mean to scare them, but up to a certain extent it is true)

I am all in for Q&A sessions. Have different threads for different subjects. It is a win-win situation, as both parties will benefit from it. As they say, the best way to learn is to teach.

I agree setting this help forum for the schooling students. I used to find it so hard to look for help. I wished there were ppl to help me earlier on...

anyway, i agree with iQing it is best to have chat room too.

maybe some of us can specialize in some subjects instead of looking through all the subjects.
Other than that, we can help out with their projects. I know the new system require students to do a lot of project including addmaths. i had alot of problem solving them.
We could provide advice on where to get info.

besides, students themselves can use recom to help out each other if we cannot help them. Asking for help and discussion will surely improve one's understanding.
We provide the place and facilities but it is up to them to make use of them.

ofcourse, this will keep most of us up-to-date on malaysia education system.
anyway, i do not think it will be a problem pulling students because words spread very fast and most probably they will come across the website while surfing.

True, with the suggestions at hand, I believe that Q&A concept would work.

Personally, I am impressed by what's in Physics STPM thread, where although it is just started, there have been a number of questions discussed and they help one another. So, may be we can look into that direction, as zillion as saying, that we could try and help and they too can help one another too.

I will bring up the idea of chat room too and see whether we have the technical ability to have it.

Hope that more idea could be poured out?

Thanks for the support on this idea~!

kn_kh87, how old are you? Hmm... i thought u were like 17years old, but u sound older than that...

Haha...do I sound older than 17? Perhaps it is because so many education matters have been brought up in the past few weeks. My mind is getting so heated up over such issues..I still have a sister two years younger than me (currently in Form 4), so I start coming up with as many ideas as I can to help her do well in her SPM.

I had an idea almost similar to zillion's, about the part on specialisation. But mine was more on the line of having 'editors' and 'monitors' for the subjects, rather than strict specialisation. I feel that the forum should be open to all to answer, and the editors can monitor and refine answers given to the upper secondary students. I think that it would be more systematic this way....

I would think that maybe different subjects may have different needs that we could work on, and I think having those who really know the syllabus well will help a lot, especially in knowing the needs of students.

I would propose that we have an Special Interest Group (SIG) to start with, and then we can gradually build on it. Any opinion? One thing to SIG disadvantage, would be that those non-member would not be able to participate, so we actually need those students to sign on.

Hope to hear more views. May be we can set 15th June, as an initial set up date, and hopefully get it out by 20th June.

providing study methods and system would be good, other than providing couching in certain subjects...

for eg like memory tips and how to be creative.. etc.

i think it's important for Recommers not to be selfish. If teachers give any tips or spot any questions, i hope that they are willing to share it here... And share their school trial papers here too... Jit Sin's papers are not bad. But if you guys can get your hands on MRSM's paper, that's the best. Most school teachers are targeting for the papers, but usually they fail to get it.

Hmmm.... during my year, for the F5 History, one of my school's trial exam essay question came out, along with one from Terengganu, one from Kedah, and one from Melaka. So in the end, hehe, i have confident coz i did the questions b4.

Ideally we can get students from all over the country here, and hopefully there could be efforts done to help them in terms of exchanging the questions, and perhaps discuss about what they know.

Yeah, I agree with iQing about how we could help in terms of helping them in memory, being creative writer for essays etc.

iQing

I think we should also focus on the flow of students into ReCom.. besides recom?s main audiences are not secondary school students right?.. it?s a problem..

we cannot hope entirely that students will find ReCom via google..

we must do something in Malaysia to make such project eye catching... be it promotion or seminar etc.

u can even publish a small books to let people know about reCom...

or we can do small booklet and distribute it in Major libraries, societies or schools...

hope this works,.... better than just waiting for students to come..

In college early this year (friends from various states), I noticed that different states managed to spot bits of different parts of the SPM papers for different subjects. Collectively, I noticed that one can actually picture the entire paper.

But of course, this can be very dangerous at times. Citing the example of the History paper last year: I managed to obtain a brief list of the 'gerak gempurs' of the subject from different states plus MRSM papers etc...Alas, the questions were totally different and less than 10% of the school could virtually pass the essay paper.
I think that it is very important to maintain a balance between reliance towards spotted questions and being ready to face any possible question.

I have browsed through my (fourth form) sister's books and I realised that I could only help her in her sciences and maths, and a bit with the finance subjects. The syllabus has changed vastly and everything is in BM. In my opinion, many of us here can still help them with their sciences and maths, but for the rest, perhaps we can only maintain a forum for them to discuss amongst themselves. But of course, we can still help them...if possible.
