For those who have read this play,I would like to know your opinion about the play.
First of all,who do you think was most responsible for Eva Smith's death?
Who do you think Inspector Goole was?Is he even human?
What do you think Priestley is trying to indirectly tell us?

Hurm, I never read this until recently, my lecturer introduced this to me. In my opinion, all of the Birlings are responsible as their actions had indirectly contributed to Eva Smith's death. In the end of the story, the true identity of Inspector Goole remains mystery. Here I think the inspector represents human conscience. As I said, the Birlings did not directly cause Eva Smith's death but undeniably, the ways they treat her are the contributing factors. Thus they deserve to feel guilty for the rest of their life. And another interesting information which our lecturer shares with us is, if you interpret the name "Inspector Goole" carefully, you will notice that there are "Spectre" and "Ghoul" which have the similar pronunciation with the bolded word in the name. Spectre and ghoul are kind of spirit or ghost. Here, Priestly did a great job in creaing a creepy atmosphere to the readers. =)

The Inspector's name was rather intriguing, form the very beggining of the story. In a way,Mrs.Birling was the harshest, giving her the final push to end her life.If she had acted with a little more humanity,Eva Smith would have survived. But all the characters did play their part in Eva's suicide.
Priestley was in the army force before he began writing.I think that's what propelled him to write this drama. His message of how we should take care of each other and how we are one body of society clearly display how much he emphasized on social responsibility and his dislike of the Capitalism system.
