Datuk Bandar of KL's vision of KL as a 24-hour city, where places, including the eateries, transportation systems, etc would be open 24-hour a day. He would be initiating projects to build condominium nearer to KL, and to make KL a bustling town 24-hour a day.

What do you guys think ? Is this proposal good?

let's see how good and what they do in implementing policies. when this guy speaks of nightlife, inherently the only form of industy that can prevail will be definitely eating, and entertainment. and entertainment consists of clubbing and pubbing and all these other 'western vices' that the government wants to eradicate. how consistent is that? if they want a 24hr city, they'll have to let loose their conservatism and xenophobia.

one other thing. vision is good. our government has lots of interesting visions. but such projects must stem from causality, and not induction. in other words, a 24hr city should be something grown out of demand, not artificially imposed. i'm sorry, but the famous phrase "if you build it they will come" from field of dreams does not hold any water here.

Do KLites really need a 24 hour lifestyle. Maybe 24 hours transportation, but it really isn't safe to travel at night when there are only a few people, especially if you travel alone. Compared to Japan, where people feel relatively secure walking on the streets at night.

Thinking about nightlife - clubbing and pubbing comes to mind. Yes they are contradicting themselves when they want KL as a nightlife hub and yet are overtly conservative when coming to entertainment. With a lax on these regulations comes social consequences. The KL police would have to work doubly hard to prevent social ills arising from these nocturnal activities.

I wonder there is even a need for 24 hours laundry service. And how exactly would medium cost/low cost/condos contribute to a 24 hour KL? Is it another excuse for more construction projects?

you know what they want to build? another (largest) shopping mall in the world. as if we haven't had enough... not only that, it will be the *first* 24hr shopping mall. with indoor roller coasters and river cruises and other frills like that.

If I have not mistaken, I have heard that Vincent tan build Times Square and quickly sells it to someone else... so no matter how white elephant time square is.. i think it?s not his business anymore... cunning isn?t it?

I think its a fantastic idea and that everyone at Recom should be supporting this idea. Great benefits can be had from a 24 hour city. Increased tourism is the main one. I cant wait to visit that new shopping mall at 2 am.

I don't think the idea of building a 24-hour shopping mall has been tossed around right?

I think they have temporarily stopped issuing approval for shopping malls in Klang Valley due to access. So, if the 24-hour shopping is to be done, then I believe they would make those Bukit Bintang area shopping mall to be open 24 hours...Just my random thoughts...

In fact, Megamall Pinang opened 24 hours sometimes over weekends, nearing festival season and it is very packed, like cars were queued up from far away to get there...

I agree with the idea...it creates more jobs and gives our commercial sector a much needed boost...though one may worry about rocketing utility bills....

A city that never sleeps....

This might increase social problems, since most of the people who would be out late at night are youths. Imagine lepaking tengah malam...

i think a few issues would be whether that would create more social ills, would the economy be able to absorp the addition of supply? would there be sufficient people be willing to work the night shift? How would that affect our labor market?
