Usually, the topics given in the essay section would be rather general in nature and most of the time, it would be on issues that affect the people. These issues need not be recent ones however.

Hmm.... My MUET teacher want us to memorise a 5 minutes long script for individual presentation. Don't you think it is not a suitable method to test our reading skill by memorising a 5 minutes long script? hmm..... I heard my friend said if i can read a script and i will get full mark for reading section. Did they look at your fluency, vocabulary, or grammar mistake?

Firstly, to clarify some things. The individual presentation is actually part of the Speaking component.

Anyway, memorising a five minute script would not be a good idea. This component does test fluency, vocabulary and grammar, but if you memorise a script, you may sound way out. A good examiner can detect whether one is memorising or not as easily as he or she can tell the difference between an apple and an orange.

My suggestion is that you polish up on your English, and read up a lot on things that are of concern to today's society. Try to communicate ideas in English, and have friends talk back to you in English. When you are naturally speaking the language, the ideas can be conveyed easily in that language and you do not have to worry about the MUET speaking component.

No, questions for the MUET Speaking component is given out only when the candidate is in the examination room. I think what Daniel meant was to prepare a five minute script on the probable topics.

There are some superb books for General Paper in Singapore. They are carefully structured, and they provide a more topical approach to GP (topics categorised by social, economical, political issues). Unfortunately, I can't find them in Malaysia. Perhaps it is due to the fact that not many A-Level Malaysian students take the General Paper. As far as I know, only Sunway College and TAR College offer GP right?

Well, trying out probrable topics is a good way of practising, but I wouldn't advise people to bank all on it, instead expect that you're given a new topic you're never worked before. If you have, then its an added bonus'!!

I have a suggestion, I learnt this technique from the table topics at Toastmasters.

Get someone to give you a topic and you have to start talking immediately for the next 2 minutes. Its kinda difficult at first, and when you get the hang of it, MUET with its one minute preparation time will be kacang puteh to you guys.

Hey hey....
I heard there's a MUET test on 30th april...is it true?
Sigh...have to prepare for the oral. My oral is bad. I become nervous everytime i start speaking in front of the class or in a discussion group....
By the way, what does it mean to "provide care and comfort to the flood victims"? How to elaborate further?

I second that

By the way, what does it mean to "provide care and comfort to the flood victims"? How to elaborate further?

Elobarating further would be to explain in detail or give examples of how you would actually implement the idea of giving care and comfort to these people.

For instance, you could say psychological counseling to the trauma victims(just a example!), organize events to raise funds to aid the victims, or by just helping the flood victims clean and clear up the wreck, donating clothes etc etc loh.

If you want to enter local uni, MUET is compulsory.

Each time you take it costs RM50. Concievably you can take it up to three times during your Form 6 education. Having a good MUET result prior to registration isn't necessary, as they only evaluate your result after you have been admitted (IE, if you are admitted into Engineering, then there is a minimum MUET band which you must possess or else they will not award you your degree).

Hi,I am a new user here!nice to meet you all(concern in study)!
I am a lower six student,I will be taking the muet in october,so I have a few questions to ask you guys!
Questions:
1)Any recommend books for muet?Actually does we need to do reference books and go for tuition in order to score muet?or it is enough with the help from school teachers?
2)As I will be taking it this year,so what preparation do I need to do to obtain better result? My english standard just average! Is it reads a lot of articles and speaks more english?Any other effective ways?
3)As I haven't been through such examination, can you all please give me some ideas on what will I come across during that day(exam)? How does it carry out?
4)If I am a private candidate, how am I going to do the group presentation? Is it with strangers?
I am nervous about this muet, maybe it is my first time.I really hope to do well this year so I can concentrate in my other subjects next year!By the way,how to overcome my panic and nervous during a presentation?
Thanks to those who kindly reply!!!

MUET exercize books are a dime a dozen. I never bought any so I can't give a reasonable recommendation. I don't think any one book is MUCH better than the others anyway.

Wow, that's pretty fast if you're taking MUET this year. There's really no shortcut here. Just do what you did for SPM 1119, but with twice the effort. IMO reading a lot can help, if you start really early, like since last year. The speaking component is not usually based on current issues so there's not that great a need to read newspapers.

I am sure your teacher will give you very specific details of the examination in due time. All I need to say is it's four papers, and the objective part is a real *****, surprisingly.

Yes, private candidates are lumped in groups according to name (or some other criteria, I'm not sure nor does it matter). Usually your school will arrage you in pre-determined groups with your classmates.

Thanks for the information!I really appreciate it!
By the way, what preparation did you do?
Can I improve my english and knowledge by watching Discovery Channel,Travelling Channel and so on(documentary one)? Will it help a lot?Can reading improve writting skill or writting skill can only be improve by practising?
Thanks again!

isit really necessary to make a big fuss bout muet? i have a couple of form 6 friends who are terrified of it. i tot the english teachers in class would give lectures, tuition, exercises, past years and stuff in form 6? with these sort of guidance, who wouldnt get at least band 4(minimum requirement for ipta)?

i had my muet in taylors(i was doing pre-u there), i didnt do any exercises nor preparations whatsoever, i only got to know the format of the test from my friends on test day itself, and i got a band 6 for the effortless challenge.

when my friends (who are now in form 6) ask me how to prepare, i always tell them, "get to know the format on test day itself, not earlier". that's the only effort you need to put in for muet.

i'm not bragging here, i'm not one of those "english speaking dude"either, i've been attending chinese school since kindergarten to sec school, the first year that i really spoke that much of english was the year i was doing pre-u!!

my point here is that you guys out there have no need to pull your hair and spend hundreds(maybe thousands) of $$ for muet tuition, muet is by far the stupid-est and effortless test i've ever sat for, even my driving test was 1000 times harder than it.
