Hello. I'm new here.
I'm an ex-ASEAN scholar, now waiting for my A-Level results..
I've been thinking a lot about undergraduate courses and I've decided on IT.

From websites, I don't really get what are the real differences between 2 different IT courses.
If anyone is doing any IT course right now, mind sharing your experience in your assignments, your study life in your college/uni, and your living area?

My mind now is quite confused cos I dunno the true difference. Which made me consider about location rather than worrying about the course of choice.

I'm interested in MMU's BIT in Multimedia Systems and BIT in Security Technology but information about any IT course would really help in my decision making.

Yes I'm planning to head for an IPTS to further my studies, but I'll consider USM too.

Hope you guys help me.. Thanks!

Wow, you have a Singapore A-level qualification and yet you do not want to continue doing your tertiary education there. I'm currently doing my Foundation in IT at MMU Melaka (sponsored by JPA) but I'm now preparing for Advanced Placement exams so that I can enter NUS to take Computing course. Btw, I think you should know my secondary school senior (Mark). He is also an ASEAN scholar of your batch.

MMU is no doubt the best IPTS for IT courses and it is probably the best in Malaysia. Anway, I can help you with your dilemma. Actually, it doesn't matter much whether you are taking Multimedia Systems or Security Technology since they share the same subjects for first year and early 2nd year. Only during the end of 2nd year and 3rd year, you got to take the subjects which are related to your major. Multimedia Systems is about how to process multimedia data, its nothing about how to create a creative animation/video whereas Security Technology is about how to implement security system on certain computer applications/network. In terms of prospect, Multimedia Systems seems to be inferior to Security Technology.

Course structure of Cyberjaya IT courses - http://fit.mmu.edu.my/undergrad/files/LLS%20course%20structure%20-%20June%202009%20intake.xls

Course structure of Melaka IT courses - http://fist.mmu.edu.my/uploaded/courseRequirement/FIST%20Pre-requisite%20(Intake%202009).xls (http://fist.mmu.edu.my/uploaded/courseRequirement/FIST%20Pre-requisite%20%28Intake%202009%29.xls)

Multimedia Systems is only offered at Cyberjaya campus whereas Security Technology is only available at Melaka campus. Location wise, I would say that Melaka is better since the living cost is lower and the place is livelier (active clubs/socities, cinema and shopping malls are only 5 minutes driving distance from the campus). Cyberjaya is pretty dull despite that the IT faculty there is stronger compared with Melaka's.

For me, I would be taking Computer Science at MMU Cyberjaya after the completion of Foundation program if I couldn't get the offer from NUS since I'm a Malaccan who is getting bored with Melaka. Good Luck.

about education in singapore, its not really my cup of tea cos i'm a person who loves to play. haha. to be frank, i just barely survived my 2 years there..
unlike MARK who is my roommate for the second year.
haha yes we went to the same JC. anderson junior college.
mark is outstanding. =) smk yok bin right? =)

one last question, comparing the pros and cons like u did,
mmu cyber has state-of-the-art infrastructure right? but location, food, living cost sucks. right?

mmu melaka is just the total opposite right?

and my mind is still not set between these 2 courses both which quality is acclaimed.

so if u have to give a score of 10 to each of these factors:

infrastructure
travel cost
living cost
study life
leisure

can u give these scores for me? it'll really help.. thanks!

PS i'll consider continuing in singapore if i get the ASEAN undergraduate scholarship =)

Yes, SMJK Yok Bin.

Cyberjaya campus should be slightly better than Melaka campus in terms of facilities and infrastructure. Although there are a few old buildings in Melaka, buildings like Faculty of Information Science & Technology (the faculty that is responsible for IT & Bio courses), Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Centre for Foundation Studies (for Foundation program) are quite new. We even have around 30 quad-core computers in our public computer lab (everyone can use it) and the internet speed is awesome - http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/9741/downloadp.jpg .

Sorry to say that I can't give you the scores because I haven't been to Cyberjaya campus but I can tell you which campus is better for each factor.

Infrastructure - Cyber > Melaka
Travel Cost - Cyber < Melaka (its very cheap to reach Malacca town)
Living Cost - Cyber < Melaka
Study Life - Cyber > Melaka (since the distraction is less)
Leisure - Cyber < Melaka

*I thought the ASEAN undergraduate scholarship will be automatically given to those who have completed pre-u under ASEAN.

1. MMU won the first and 2nd places in the MSC Malaysia Asia Pacific ICT Awards (BEST OF STUDENT PROJECTS - TERTIARY SOFTWARE/HARDWARE Category)

2. MMU students win the national CISCO competition every year. For year 2009 - http://star-techcentral.com/tech/story.asp?file=/2009/12/28/technology/20091228145149&sec=technology

As far as I know, you can only apply for JPA scholarship. They offer 10,000 places (IPTA/IPTS) each year for STPM/Matrik/Diploma leavers.
