Hi, i'm waiting for my spm result now, but i' m rather confusing about what course i'm going to choose soon. Hope that i can get some advice or suggestion here. I'm a science stream student. erm.. for me, topics that involve imagination seem easier to me, and i like math. i always get good marks for my art(drawing) and i have passed my diploma in piano recital (ATCL). i don't really like memorising things.
i hope to work with people but not merely papers and computer. Do not need a really very high pay but at least a stable one, and hope that i can help people with my job in the future.
my father wants me to study medicine. maybe it is ok for me, just ok - means not really fond of it. but i don't want to disappoint him. Am i suppose to follow his will and starting to "plant" my interest in this field?
can anyone please help me in what course should i choose? i don't want to regret only after i start my study in the course. Thanks.

I think u should just find some other course which related to maths since u like maths. Medicine mainly about biology and if u don't really like to memorize things, medicine would be a torment for u. I can assure u that u will be regret if u choose the course that u don't really like. Maybe u should choose some courses such as accounting, finance, economics, investment, statistics, maths, actuarial science and a lot more... I love maths too, so i'm not going to take medicine as my choice in my tertiary education. It would be be my last option i think... btw, i have just finished my SPM a month ago... wanna take actuarial science in future... =)

I think you can try looking through graphic design & illustration or animation. It needs a creative mind and if I'm not wrong, some mathematics calculation too. Not only that, since you are quite good in music, maybe you can create videos or advertisements. I have some friends and family who are taking this course.

And here are some info I found on net:

my father wants me to study medicine. what course should i choose?
What your father suggested are courses that he thinks are suitable for you and may have a better prospect. If you are really confused, I think you can try consult some pharmacists and see if you like their working condition and surroundings. I believe it's not a bad choice but it really is up to your interest.

Not only that, do look for more information on net and see if you are ready to further your studies in it. You can also refer to Doctorjob's book.

Please do not regret with your choice and I wish you best of luck! :)

Well, you should sit down and list down things that you like to do on one piece of paper, and then list down the courses and eventually jobs that are connected to it.

If you are selecting your courses, do take the courses that you think you will enjoy doing for 10-15 years after your graduation. Pick the things that you are good at, and like, and stick to it... After all, you wouldn't want to do something that you don't like to do for the rest of your life!

"imagination seems easier" - you sound a lot like me :)

architecture, graphic design or music, perhaps?

if you are not:
- sincere enough to help patients, or
- interested enough in medicine, or
- 'materialistic' enough for that 5 digit salary,
then you most probably shouldn't do medicine. it does not worth 5 years of study + 10 years bond.

cheers :)

Your drawing are good huh? I recommend you Applied Geology. It's a fun course. It need a LOT of imagination and concept understanding to ace her, especially in geological mapping and structural geology.

The job opportunity are stable, since only 5-6 IPT offer geology-related course. UM the only IPT offering Applied Geology, it also offer Pure Geology. USM and UTP offer geophysics, while UKM, UMS offer Geology.

Applied Geologist spent less time in lab doing analysis. They work a LOT on field and sunburn might give you a fair skin. :))

Perhaps you could look into forms of higher education which do not require that you select a course/major before beginning study, if you're not sure at the moment. The liberal arts system in the US comes to mind. You have about two years to take classes in all kinds of fields before declaring a major (and even then it's not set in stone); by doing this, you may discover that what you really love doing is very different from what you thought you'd like.

Of course, the US may not be in your plans. If you have a specific country in mind, try looking up information about random courses offered there - perhaps one might catch your eye. And while waiting for your SPM results, perhaps you could try to get a part time job in one of the fields you're considering (or 'shadow' someone you know working in that field) to get a taste of what it's like.

i dont know if this will help u or not. im jus going to tell u wat i did. i was in ur state too. I love maths, as well as chemistry and biology. before this ive always said that i wanted to be a lecturer on maths. but after ive learnt maths and add maths, i figured that i'd never want to deal with numbers this complicated again! u know how ppl change their minds.

So wat's left were chemistry n biology. most of my frens wanted me to take medicine. my parents wanted me to be a lecturer. i reflected a bit. then i did surveys of course. to be a doctor, means study hard, work had, wel basically evrything is hard. and i have to deal with humans directly. that's wat i was afraid of. being a lecturer asks for great interpersonal skills and that's exactly wat im lacking of.

after days of pondering, i decided to grab any chances that i have. be it anything that involves science or maths. wel, except doctor.

when my trial results came out n i got staright As, i applied for 5 scholarships using my trial spm.

ExxonMobil - Chemical Engineering
Sime Darby - Pharmacology
Bank Negara - Actuarial Science / Accounting and Finance (i took principle of accounting as my 10th subject)
MARA SPC - Pure Science
Yayasan Khazanah - Molecular biology / Biochem

see wat i meant by grabing the opportunities? apply for a lot of scholarships but with different courses that r still within ur interests. then evrything else depends on fate and prayer alone. watever course i end up with, i'll jus go with it. :)

careers that contribute to the community are a lot out there. sory i cant be of much help in answering ur 2nd question. i only answered ur 1st question bout ur dad wanting u to take medicine.

anyway, good luck! :wink
