It is simply about the versions of the Intel's Core Processor Family.

Sandy Bridge is the 2nd generation for the Intel's Core Processor Family, while the Ivy Bridge is the 3rd generation of it. The differences? The technology itself. It might be technical to explain every bits of them but just understand this statement :

"Ivy Bridge ranked a little bit higher in processing speed and graphic rendering capability compared to the Sandy Bridge"

That's enough. The gap between the differences are not really obvious for normal users but it will cause no harm to own the latest technology in your gizmos.. hope that my explanations can help you and further explanations, you might need Uncle Google's help.

Exactly as they have pointed out. The naming's just to denote different generations of the processor, just as phone makers come up with different names for their new product lines each year.

The i3, i5 and i7 denotations remain the same each year and just refer to processing power difference within the generation.

So obviously an Ivy Bridge i5 is better than a Sandy Bridge i5 (though probably not particularly noticeably) and an Ivy Bridge i7 is better than an Ivy Bridge i5.

Most laptops coming out this year will have Ivy Bridge, so if you're buying, no harm in trying to get a computer with Ivy Bridge. It's not a whole big difference, but since it's the latest one you might as well see about having it.
