Beginning of an era

PERDANA University will be officially launched tomorrow by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
The ceremony will see the installation of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the university?s first chancellor.
Our student-centric curriculum ... will prepare them for leadership in the medical field. ? PROF CHARLES WIENER
The institution?s two medical schools ? Perdana University Graduate School of Medicine (Pugsom) and Perdana University-Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) School of Medicine ? will also receive its inaugural class of first-year medical students.
?We are excited to receive them (the students),? said Pugsom dean and chief executive officer Prof Charles Wiener.
?We believe our student-centric curriculum is designed for outstanding individuals and will prepare them for leadership in the medical field,? he added.
Prof Weiner also said the admissions process was highly competitive, and recruiting students with a pre-existing first degree ensures that they were dedicated to pursuing a medical career.
Pugsom is offering a four-year graduate entry programme based on a United States curriculum in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
While Pugsom will receive its first batch of 27 students tomorrow, almost 100 undergraduate medical students will register for classes at the PU-RCSI School of Medicine on Sept 19.
The Perdana University Graduate School of Medicine will receive its inaugural class tomorrow.
The undergraduate medical degree programme is in collaboration with RCSI and will be based on the programme offered by the renowned medical school in Dublin.
?The ethos of the PU-RCSI School of Medicine is founded on the principle that the patient?s interest is paramount in clinical teaching, medical practice and research,? said the school?s dean Prof Dr Anthony John Andrew Cunningham.
All students will undergo a one-week orientation before beginning lessons.
?Students will be prepared to take progressively increasing levels of clinical responsibilities and to develop leadership roles for future healthcare needs in Malaysia,? said Perdana University chief executive Maj Gen (Rtd) Datuk Dr R. Mohanadas.
?These students have a great advantage of being pioneers in the first ever classes of Perdana University?s two medical schools,? he added.

Perdana uni boost for education

PETALING JAYA: The country's education sector is set to chalk another milestone when Perdana University begins offering world class medical courses via collaboration with the renowned Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Khaled Nordin said the university's inauguration marked another feather in Malaysia's hat as it would see collaboration between two world class universities and a local institution of higher learning.
?The opening of Perdana University will be a boost for our education sector as it will now be more competitive and be able to fulfil promises of quality education, particularly in the field of medicine.
?This certainly complements the Government's efforts to promote Malaysia as a hub of education. It gives us an advantage over other countries by offering multi-discipline programmes to students,? he said yesterday.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will officiate at the opening of the university today, which will see former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad appointed as its first chancellor.
The university is expected to start its intake of students this year.
The Government had announced the setting up of the Academic Medical Centre as part of its public-private partnership initiatives under the 10th Malaysia Plan.
Najib, in his 2011 Budget speech, said the joint venture between Academic Medical Centre Sdn Bhd, Johns Hopkins Medical International and the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland would involve a private investment of RM2bil.
There are currently more than 50 private higher learning institutes nationwide.

SERDANG: It is hoped the newly-opened Perdana University, a collaboration with two renowned international medical universities, will prevent a brain drain of top medical graduates.
“I hope the chance to study the best medical curriculum in the world will encourage more of our country's top graduates to stay at home,” said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Perdana University is a joint effort with the Johns Hopkins University and the Royal College of Surgeons.
It will be the first teaching medical school for the country.
He said the collaboration with the world renowned US and Irish medical universities would help establish the university as a world-class education research healthcare hub.
Over to you: Najib looking on as Dr Mahathir receives the certificate as Perdana University chancellor from the chairman of the board of governors Tan Sri Dr Mohan Swami after the installation ceremony in Serdang yesterday.
“This new university, a far-sighted collaboration between the Government's Public-Private Unit and the corporate sector, is something of a landmark for Malaysia,” Najib said when officiating the university yesterday.
He also announced that the Government would provide a significant number of scholarships to Malaysians selected to pursue their medical training at the university.
The university saw the first intake of 30 medical students yesterday from Johns Hopkins, with another 75 students from the Royal College of Surgeons.
Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was installed as the university's first Chancellor.

Later, at a press conference, the university's chief executive Datuk Dr R. Mohanadas said the Public Service Department would provide scholarships to 50% of local students selected to study at the university.
“Some 90% of students will be locals,” he said.
The RM2.5bil university with its 600-bed hospital will be fully operational by 2014 and have 1,000 students.
Part of the students who get JPA medic overseas will be sent to Perdana in the future?
