NUS has opened it's applications for 2012 admission. Here's a thread to discuss about entry into National University of Singapore (NUS). Whether it's about the financial matters, administrative information, accommodation, student life or studies. Feel free to discuss anything related to NUS.

Also,I really created this forum so that we could get to know one another before going to NUS.I heard the number of recomers going to NUS is astounding.

The closing date of application for
Cambridge/Edexel A-levels, STPM holders is 1 April 2012.

Lots of people are particularly discouraged to apply to Singapore I would say. General assumption, yes, but it's based on a calculative guess. Just look at the number of ReCom-ers who managed to enter into NUS for AY2010/2011 compared to those just 2 years before. Numbers show statistically, less and even less Malaysians are being admitted into Singapore university. For one thing, Singaporeans are angry that they are losing out their places to Malaysians in local universities. The other is that, many more Malaysians rather go back home to work, then to stay and work with the government, despite nice PR offers. The government's initial aim in providing university placements for Malaysians and scholarships was to attract talents to contribute to the economy. Apparently, if the government doesn't see any marked improvement in their contributions and the fact that their locals are getting angry, of course they have to cut down on the number of places. The last thing I can think of is that Singapore is getting increasingly hard to get in, from the application POV. Just meeting the academic requirements and a high SAT score won't guarantee you unless you have the soft skills, personality and EC's they are looking for.

I for one, am not applying to NUS thanks to the fact they want SAT scores from me when I finish A-level, that is after the initial closing date. I don't plan to take the SAT as USA or Singapore is not my country of choice. Besides, NUS does not offer me a double major structure which I intend to do later.

No worry. You'll never know until you try. Just apply rather than waste the chance.

hi,i'm currently waiting for my STPM 2011 results . According to a NUS brochure ( AY 2012/2013 ) , the approximate tuition fees (engineering) and living expenses per annum cost around $ 21,340 . The financial aids per annum given will be around $11,820 .
If I'm being given a place for NUS , It means I will still have to find my own ways to settle the remaining $9,520 .
I have no parents to rely on . Is there any way which I can get this amount of $ .
Please guide me on this . I really wish I could get into s'pore universities .

Well, applying for a scholarship is the next best option then. Be warned that the ASEAN Undergraduate scholarship is not something easy to obtain. Extremely competitive.

I am also applying to NUS 2012 for Quantitative Finance using my A Level results. Anyone got selected for the ASEAN Scholarship Interview 2012?

my aunts , and their family are the one providing me all these years , I need to figure out ways to settle this , they still have to take care my sis ( doing her f4 next year). I can't possibly depend entirely on them . I hope I can get into a good uni like NUS , NTU .
I just hope my results is enough for applying scholarships ( my results in school tests is just average , arnd >3.75 for the 1.5 years )
If not , i might have to pray hard for good courses in local unis ( which I think is super duper hard for STPMer to get into UM/UKM/USM for hot engineering course) , so IMO the best way to improve my life is get into s'pore uni .
or i have to borrow PTPTN to go private local , end up being a debtor for the few decades .

Is it possible to get financial aids from private companies ( as a personal loan ) , in exchange for working contract or bond after graduated from studies ? anyone did that b4 ?

I see. Well, getting good test results is only a fraction of what is required to gain their competitive scholarships for NUS/NTU as you may know. Considering your financial condition, I would advise you to apply for local private universities like Monash and Nottingham to get offers from them and then start scouting out for scholarships for local private universities. There are also scholarships for local public universities but I am not so keen on those.

I don't think they will call those as personal loans but study loans probably. Heard of one banking body issuing that last year but not sure whether there will be anymore like those. Maybe you should ring up some banks ?
