Hi everyone out there, i'm currently trying to find out some info about the master's in ed program in USM, specialising in TESOL. Anyone have any inkling or insight into the programs or even friends who are in the education program of these two unis? Information about the program or rankings are difficult to come by. Would appreciate your comments or help very much. Thanks! I'm glad to 'meet' a group of people so robust and passionate about their education and future here!

NUS is ranked among top 20 in the world.

UM ranked among top 80-100.

Go figure.

I am not here to say whether UM or USM program in education is good, but I would suggest that hyacinth9 to go and visit the campus, and talk to the professors/lecturers, students and see the facilities, environment around and judge it. That would be the best way for you to judge. Try to sit in some of the classes, and see whether you think that would be good.

On ranking, I personally don't think that we should look into the ranking too much. The similar ranking that ranks NUS around 20, puts Dartmouth College beyond 100th ranking.

I agree in the "neither" response not because I know how it is like, but I just think we need newer ideas in education. It's stiffling to be doing education in M'sia if we're just learning about the problem. A masters after that overseas would be an awesome experience. So, "either", then explore!

misled youth & jinjoo...

ok, we, the students from the local unis might not be as great as u guys' but why the heck do u wanna say something bad about your own countries' local unis?

i mean, the education system in msia might sucked big time but it's not as bad as you think. Moreover, u guys might be or are studying in some top unis of the GLOBE. so what? does this make us, the local uni students' brilliantness (as what i would like to call it as) lower than yours?

come to think of it, either u are super rich or u are super smart (in your, A-levels OR SPM!), you can afford or been given scholarship to study in some prestigious unis of the GLOBE! lucky you and congrats as well.

what about us? 1st of all, not all of us are dumb bells that made our unis ranking become the worst of the worst!

I have a friend who got an ASEAN scholarship to study in NUS and he went for only a month, in the end, what happened to him? he cant stand the pressure so he came back to UM! and now, he's working in one of the famous accounting firms in the GLOBE! does this mean that the local universities' standard are not up to your uni's?

One of you admitted that you've never been to one but why are you giving us such a negative perception? If you are saying that we are not competent enough, why did a student from UIA or UIIM was being chosen as the BEST ORALIST in an international moot competition? that student beat some of the world class unis' law students for your info to bag the award.

Can anyone explain that to me?

I'm very disappointed with such remarks.

hehe.. I agree totally with what stevemc90 said.
I feel that it's unwise to belittle Malaysian IPTAs and the graduates from these universities.
IMHO, universities only matter very little when it comes to working life. What matters most is the capability of that individual.

Among the international students here in Cambridge, we have some amount of pride in the top unis back in our own countries. The Chinese ppl will be proud of their Beida and Tsinghua, Japs boast abt Tokyo Dai Gaku, Koreans and their SNU & KAIST, Singaporeans and their NUS & NTU.

Me.. I'm with my UM, USM, UKM...... and even UiTM! I'm not ashamed or feel any bit inferior by doing this.
