As of 2005, the course structure of the USP has changed and is still changing. They are changing the curriculum quite drastically.
Old requirements: 8 first tier modules 4 advanced modules - at least 1 Independant Study Module included New requirements: 8 first tier modules 3 tracks for advanced curriculum: 1) Bi-cultural immersion 2) NUS Overseas College 3) Multidisciplinary Seminar cum research module First tier modules Every USP student has to complete 8 first tier modules, including 1 writing module and 1 Singapore Studies module. Science/Engin/Computing students have to fulfill 4 modules from the Arts basket and 3 from the Science basket, while Arts/BizAd students take 4 from Science and 3 from Arts. SDE students (Archi, Industrial design, etc) can choose whether they want to follow the Science requirements or the Arts requirements. The writing module counts as an Arts module. Advanced Curriculum The Advanced Curriculum has 3 tracks. 1) Bi-cultural immersion If you go for this, you will spend 1 year immersed in a foreign country, studying their culture, interacting with the local students. YOU WILL STUDY IN THEIR LANGUAGE. At the end of your 1 year study, you are encouraged to source out an internship in that country as well. You will graduate with a minor in that country studies. E.g. if Japan --> Japanese Studies Currently, this programme only sends students to Peking University for bi-cultural immersion, but word has it that USP is seeking to sign agreements with Japan, the USA and India. In the future, the possibilities will be widened. 2) NUS Overseas colleges http://www.overseas.nus.edu.sg/noc/ Info is found here. Basically, it's exactly the same as normal NOC. You go overseas to the US or China and be an intern in a start-up company. You will be paid as you will be working fulltime. You study part-time and graduate with a minor in Technopreneurship. Both option 1) and 2) require you to graduate at least 1 semester later than everyone else. Thus you will extend your study length. 3) Multidisciplinary seminars Less info is available on this. Scholars would take part in a seminar over the course of one sem with scholars from other fields. The seminars would involve the different disciplines and address a theme, for example the concept of "Time". After that, each scholar will be grouped into a team consisting of people from different majors and are to construct a research project involving ALL of the disciplines present in the seminar and in the group. Personally, this is really difficult. Multi-disciplinary things really stretch your brain.[/u] |
