An air-conditioned study room is provided in each block respectively so enjoy it because you will only have a fan in study rooms in Cemara and Akasia!
No WIFI so far in Cendana. There are two computer labs, one in block 1 and block 2 respectively. The computer labs are open from 5.30p.m. to 11.00p.m. on weekdays and 9.00a.m. to 4.30p.m. on Saturdays. The computer labs close on Sundays. Connection speed is decent.
Students are not allowed to bring stoves and fridges to the hostel, but are allowed to bring rice cookers and kettles. As for outside food, there is a "mamak" shop nearby called Dawood. Prices can be rather expensive, but it is one of the few places where Cendana students can eat regularly. There is a market nearby, where students can buy fruits and fresh products. There will be "pasar malam" at the market every Tuesday and Friday evening.
There are also a couple of Malay food stalls opposite the market, the most popular being Mak Endon. Prices are much lower as compared to Dawood but hygiene is questionable. In Cendana itself, there will be a van there selling food every evening. However, the food isn't very nice and the hygiene in preparing the food is questionable too. There is a possibility of suffering from diarrhoea after taking the food either from Mak Endon or Cendana van. Therefore, care should be taken when choosing the food. Take the food at your own risk.
Chinese food in Shah Alam can be found abundantly in Seksyen 25, that is if students have their own transport. Otherwise, students can take the RapidKL bus to Seksyen 2 where a food court selling various food is open along with franchises such as McDonald's and KFC. Otherwise, students can take the very same bus to Seksyen 9 where Plaza Shah Alam is located.
The water supply at Cendana is rather clean. Water filters are provided at the first floor of every staircase. Water filters at block 1 all dispense hot water, but some do not dispense cold water.
Washing machines are provided in block 2 in Cendana (downstairs), and it costs RM2.50 per wash. The washing machine is coin operated and it accepts 10, 20 and 50 sen coins. Another option is the laundry shop beside Dawood. The price is quite reasonable.
The police station is just beside Cendana. Safety around Cendana is not to be worried about. So far there are no criminal cases occurring nearby except cases where items are being stolen, e.g. handphones and laptops.
They are useful for all students, as every course requires assignments and reports to be completed.
Each electrical item is subjected to a RM10 fee per semester. However, there are students who never paid and the Kolej authorities never checked either.
Televisions, refrigerators, air-conditioners and bathroom water heaters are forbidden.
Spot checks are carried out at random. However, during the course of lodging of some students it was never carried out. If carried out, students can just lock their things in the locker to prevent the items from being discovered.
Students lodging in Cendana are expected to wear long pants and also sleeved shirts whenever they are to go in and out of the hostel. However, in the hostel students can wear shorts and sleeveless shirts.
Air-conditioned INTEC buses are provided every morning during weekdays (except public holidays). Their service has been improved a lot, so it shouldn't be a problem for students to get to INTEC on time. Buses usually line up by the road beside Cendana every morning. From 7.00a.m. to 8.00 a.m, students are advised to take an earlier bus as the later buses are usually crowded. This is because most of the students tends to wake up late and the class starts at 8.00a.m. After 8.00a.m., the buses will come at around 1 or 2 buses per hour.
To get elsewhere, students can take the bus at the bus stop by the main road at Cendana. The only bus that stops there is RapidKL T602 so students can't take the wrong bus. Then from the bus, students can stop at the bus hub at Seksyen 2 for buses elsewhere. To reach INTEC, Seksyen 18 or the KTM Station, take T529. To get to KL Sentral, you can take U80 or the KTM.
Otherwise, students can just take the taxi. The Kemuncak Awal Shah Alam Taxi Company can be reached at 03-5541-1455.
There's a gym room in block 1, which only opens in the evening. There's a small park nearby, which is suitable for jogging. Right in front of Block 1 is the basketball court, sepak takraw court and also the futsal court for sport enthusiasts.
A TV room equipped with Astro is also provided in each block.
Fees are paid in full by the sponsors, so students only need to register on the registration day.
General View of Life at Cendana
It is a rather peaceful place that is not as hectic as Cemara/Akasia at Seksyen 18. The only issue students might face is the lack of food variety. The air quality is also good as it is far from any factories or major traffic.
