Maybe you could decide on how the expanded network should look like first. Here are a few questions to get you started:
  • What is the purpose of expansion of the network? Is it to accommodate new staffs or new departments?
  • How is the network structure of the existing infrastructure?
  • What are the departments involved? How many nodes/clients will they need at each department? What is the number of clients/nodes are they expecting to have in that time?
  • The location of nodes/clients where the cabling will be deployed?
  • Do they require high speed connection? Is 100Mbps enough, or do they require 1000Mbps?
From the first two questions you should be able to derive a simple topology diagram of what they have, and what they'll need. Once you have the topology you should be able to decide on the equipment required to complete the task.
