NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has successfully engineered a collision between a probe and Comet Tempel 1 today coinciding with Independence Day in the US.

The cosmic firework took place at 0552GMT/UT 040705 involving Deep Impact's 820 pound Impactor probe and Comet Tempel 1 roughly the size of Manhattan.

What are they trying to research on through this collision? Would it help anything in terms of engineering or space exploration?

The scientists are trying to observe the materials within the comet, its structure and composition in order to get more clues about the birth of the solar system as they believe comet may hold the key to this mystery. And probably with this, they can have a better understanding on the birth of life as well.

its not only the birth of life only, there are perhaps raw materials which are abundant on objects in outer spae like comets that may be of use to us when the resources on earth got used up later..perhaps they can device a way to harvest the materials an use it for our own good....

and i would also like to know just how did our solar system formed, as comets hold the materials from the very beginings of the our home, we will be taking a big step into the unederstanding of the evolution of our solar system, which is undenialbly our home

I thought deep impact 's mission is to try to deviate the asteroid's direction? but they succeeded in changing the course. . . like by 0.0000XXX degree. which made not much different . .

I think you are talking about the movie instead

In any case, a change in 0.000xxx degree can mean the difference between crashing on Earth, and missing Earth altogether.
