I think we need to create a life science discussion thread to bring in all the life science malaysians in NUS. I definitely wanna share my life science experience as well as guiding he freshies, the first to enjoy this privilege is of course my fellow malaysians in NUS.

We totally understand, but if we have enough volunteers, all you need to do is to create a new board/forum/section. No, wait. Actually, we can just utilize our existing boards.
I would like to spearhead one about introduction to programming =) I feel Malaysians are underexposed to programming... I didn't know how to learn a language till I came to America! But right now let's concentrate on ReMag etc first

I would like to be the next person in the accountancy field to destroy the stereotype that accountants are boring people who deal with nothing more than crunching numbers.

My very honest opinion.

First time knowing the forum I feel kinda scared. Sure, Recom serves as the number 1 scholarship information source, with heaps of help regarding interview experience etc. But as I browse through Recom, there is so much more than that. I actually enjoy reading non-academic related posts.

Why scared? Personally because I feel..that most senior Recomers know everything and for my know-nothing self to have an opinion - the fear of sounding so stupid is always there.

Maybe this is just a personal issue of not having enough confidence, but it's the ambiance that Recom has. While Recomers are extremely very very nice and helpful, some like me might find it uncomfortable to speak up.

I guess probably because most Recomers are very educated people, which is very inspiring and I really really think it boosts me to work harder. But, some of us can't help but to think "I'm not them, not even close" thus, don't really bother to approach.

Oh well, I hope no one is offended or anything, I am not pointing anyone out in particular, everyone here is very nice, and it's normal for a newbie to feel uncomfortable at first right?

I wish I can contribute something here, even after receiving scholarships etc, just don't know in what way

Hey there, thanks for your very honest opinion

Personally even though I've been in Recom for quite a while, many times the newbie slash don't know anything feeling is still there.

Well, Recomers come from all sorts of backgrounds: many are just freshly out of school and wondering what to do after SPM, while some are pre-u students, some are undergraduate/degree students and some are even older than that (I think). Some study locally, some are studying overseas, and we also come from different backgrounds culturally, socially etc., so as you can see our life experiences and POVs differ, and you get all sorts of opinions.

And even though most senior Recomers do know a lot (thanks to their life and study experiences), they don't know everything. They are also still learning just like us. (haha no offence seniors..) xD

You can contribute in any way... doesn't have to be just academic/scholarship related(though contributing to that would be a plus for many of the scholarship seekers that come here yearly). Every question/opinion can be a contribution.

Hope that helped
PS: Welcome to Recom...

Strangely, when I decided to join ReCom last time it wasn't because it is a good scholarship info resource but rather because it has many interesting (albeit old, haha) topics.

Even though I'm considered a senior here now, but I still think many other ReCommers are far more knowledgeable than me. But don't be afraid to share your thoughts, even if it's only one sentence long. Members disagreeing with your opinions does not mean they think your opinions are stupid. We are here to learn and teach each other. After all, ReCom IS a forum and forums are created for such purpose.

Just like you, the profound explanations by many ReCommers on various topics also inspired me to strive harder to be a wiser person. But you need not try to be them; being more knowledgeable is to ultimately help yourself in life, not proving your intelligence to others.

Don't worry, it's normal. All of us certainly have either gone through or are going through this

You can help future juniors in their scholarship applications just as how you are presently seeking help from seniors here! Or give them study tips. Just taking part in discussions is already contributing as well.

Yeah me too. I joined Recom (back in 2005 me thinks) just to know more about other people in Malaysia, their opinions, interests etc. I used to check the forums out everyday then, but schoolwork took over quickly. I do check in from time to time, especially during the holidays, or when I need some updates from an "unbiased" source.
What put me off sometimes is the way some forumers post their replies, ESPECIALLY when it come to political issues. It seems that anyone who doesn't share the same opinion with another will be quickly be branded "naive", "blind" etc. Then insults start flying. What pisses me off the most is those who accuse others of being naive. If he's being naive, then educate him, show him the facts, reply POLITELY. Shoving that word into his face would just turn him off, and you lose another potential supporter (for the party you're supporting).
Well Recom being dead after the scholarship thingy...whatdya expect, candy? Malaysians are an ungrateful lot (in some things, not all) so it ain't a surprise to see 'em leaving after getting what they want. Very few will have the courtesy of even saying "Thank you" after that.
Being from EEE background, I suggest that mods create some sort of "project" forum where members could post their project files (matlab/simulink models, circuit diagrams, codes) to share with others. You know, open-source stuff like Arduino, or Beagleboard. Could help nurture some interests ya know. We could do the same with other engineering fields as well

I normally post in ReCom regarding topics that I am usually sure of (though it may not be accurate ). It may have been a scholarship experience I had been through or questions regarding the field of study I'm in. These questions only come out during the peak season. And this pretty much means my account lies in a dormant state over the rest of the year, though I do regularly check ReCom out and see if I can help answer any questions over the quiet down time.

Here's a suggestion,

Why don't you allocate someone to be in charge of one forum regarding their expertise/field of study etc? I'm not sure if the mods can allow moderating privileges to the person but then this individual will be in charge of moderating comments and answering serious (or casual spammy, whatever rocks your boat ;) ) questions regarding a particular topic...it's like the 'get to know your mods' kinda forum, except to the public.

I think I share a similar sentiment with leeashroe about being intimidated by many knowledgeable recom posters.

I started reading recom posts in 2007 when I was form 4, when everybody in school was talking ONLY about the JPA scholarships. I registered for an account, but almost never posted anything. All I did was basically soaking up information about scholarships and overseas studies. I really appreciate what the recom seniors have done to make this forum an informative erm...platform (sorry my english) for others to self-help themselves when the information we get from school are probably not enough.

I've started posting since a few months back, sharing my tiny tiny bit of knowledge about education opportunities and stuff like that, although I asked much more questions than what I answered, hahaahaha.
