al·tru·ism/ˈaltro͞oˌizəm/
Noun:
1. The belief in or practice of disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others.
2. Behavior of an animal that benefits another at its own expense.

Why do you take part in charitable endeavors? When you take part in philantropy, you get tax breaks - If you donate to a charity anonymously, you feel good about yourself - Almost every single person I've asked in this world says that the reason they do volunteer work is because they feel like they are making a difference, because they feel good about themselves.

This, too, is acceptable payment - Happiness is not a tangible reward, but it is a reward that's the same as any other in the world. This feeling is neither 'disinterested' nor 'selfless'. Therefore, I argue that altruism does not exist. Thoughts?

I have come across the same thought - I suppose if internal gratification negates the notion of "absolute altruism", then yes the only "truly altruistic" people are non chalance good doers. I believe such people do exist, but these "altruistic" people are a bit of a perversion if the romantic idea of altruism, so one might as well not consider them as altruistic.

When I help my sister wash her shoe. Did someone force me to do that? no. Am I happy doing that? no. Why did I do that? To get her shoe clean. There, altruism.

#4 Old 10-05-2013 Question Re: Is there true altruism in this world?

Sure, in the cases of strangers helping out other strangers in need. That counts right?

Especially in dangerous situations. If risking your life to save someone you don't know isn't altruism, then I don't know what is.

I don't think ppl think about helping a car accident or burning building for the "feel good afterwards" factor or media attention since their life is on the line as well.

I guess that if helping someone goes against your personal basic human nature of self-preservation or "only look out for #1" then that qualifies as altruism.
